I Reincarnated As A Dragon With A Devourer System
Chapter 47: Towards An unknown worldThe rain of manna continued to fall with an almost hypnotic serenity.
Each drop fell slowly from the gray sky, and upon touching the water’s surface, it released a tiny blue flash before disappearing.
Noir walked slowly among the enormous ponds covered with floating leaves.
That place was completely different from the rest of the Magic Valley. There were no trails, no crystalline trees, and no cherry trees.
Only water, giant roots emerging from the bottom of the lakes, and vegetation so abundant that it seemed to have claimed every corner of the landscape.
’Definitely... this place feels like a world apart.’
Uki was a few meters ahead, leaping from rock to rock with an ease that was starting to make me a little jealous.
The golden sphere, on the other hand, remained unusually silent. It simply floated above one of Noir’s horns as it surveyed the surroundings.
This caught the young dragon’s attention.
’Even you’re being serious?’
The sphere responded with a faint flash.
Noir raised an eyebrow.
’That doesn’t exactly put my mind at ease.’
They continued on their way.
The water was so clear that you could see the bottom of some of the ponds. Fish of every imaginable color swam among the tall aquatic plants.
Some had small, glowing fins. Others seemed to be made entirely of liquid crystal; he even caught a glimpse of a tiny turtle whose shell was covered with a small garden of blue flowers.
’This place is incredible.’
Noir activated the Devourer several times to record new species. His encyclopedia kept expanding at an absurd rate.
Every few meters, he found something he had never seen before. And that made walking even more exciting.
However... his Draconic Senses kept sending him a strange sensation, though it wasn’t dangerous.
It was... as if the entire pond were falling silent; it was very strange.
Noir slowly slowed down and murmured.
"Do you feel it?"
Uki stopped walking immediately. The white wolf’s ears began to twitch from side to side.
The rain kept falling.
The fish kept swimming.
But... There was absolutely no sound to be heard. Not a single song, not even the buzzing of an insect.
Just the rain.
Plop... Plop... Plop...
A chill ran down Noir’s scales.
’I don’t like this.’
The golden sphere slowly descended until it came to rest in front of him.
For the first time since I’d known it... The light grew much brighter, as if it were trying to warn him of something.
Noir swallowed hard.
Then... the water in the pond to his right began to ripple.
It didn’t seem to be caused by the rain; the ripples were too large and irregular. Something... was moving beneath the surface.
Noir took a step back without taking his eyes off the water.
"Uki."
The white wolf let out a deep growl as he backed up until he was standing next to the dragon.
The ripples continued to spread, growing wider and faster.
Until... the entire lake began to vibrate.
BOOOOM!!
A massive column of water shot up into the sky. Thousands of liters cascaded down around the pond.
The enormous floating leaves were flung in all directions.
And, from the depths... A gigantic head slowly emerged.
Noir felt his heart skip a beat.
’...’
"What the hell...?"
The creature was a colossal snake.
Its body seemed to go on forever. Scales of a vivid turquoise color reflected the bluish light of the mana rain.
Long, leaf-like fins ran along its entire neck and back, moving gently with the current of the water.
Two enormous curved horns jutted out from either side of its head. And its golden eyes... gazed calmly at Noir.
The gigantic creature finished rising several meters above the water. Its size completely dwarfed the nearby trees.
Noir slowly raised his head. And he kept raising it.
’...’
’Okay.’
’I’m starting to suspect that this Valle has an unhealthy obsession with making me feel small.’
The immense creature lowered its neck slightly.
Its golden eyes were now directly in front of the young black dragon’s.
For a few long seconds... Neither of them moved.
The rain of manna continued to fall between them.
And Noir realized, purely on instinct... that this creature was, by far, the most powerful being he had encountered since arriving in the Magic Valley.
A chill ran through every one of his scales; it wasn’t fear... but something much deeper.
Instinct.
His entire body was screaming one thing at him.
Run!
Noir swallowed hard. His Draconic Senses could barely comprehend the immense amount of mana surrounding that creature.
It was like trying to measure an ocean with a glass.
’Uki.’
The wolf didn’t take his eyes off the monster.
But he took a small step toward Noir.
That was enough.
"Now!"
The young dragon’s black wings spread wide.
BOOM!!
The ground exploded beneath their feet as they both shot up into the sky.
The giant serpent didn’t roar. Nor did it pursue them immediately.
He watched them walk away.
For a brief moment...
Noir thought they had actually escaped. Until he felt the water in the entire pond begin to rise.
Everything began to rise behind them.
Noir barely turned his head. His eyes flew open. A massive wave was forming beneath the creature.
It wasn’t a normal wave... It was a damn mountain of water!
"Faster!"
The little dragon flapped his wings with all his might.
Uki ran along the enormous branches jutting out from between the ponds, leaping from one to the next as the golden sphere flew at full speed alongside Noir.
BOOOOOOM!!
The wave crashed behind them.
The impact shook everything. All around them, entire trees disappeared beneath the water.
Noir didn’t look back; he just kept flying. Thanks to his evolution, he could now fly, but he wasn’t an expert at it; he was moving purely on instinct.
With every flap of his wings, his stamina was rapidly depleting, as he was flying against the wind, which seemed to slow him down rather than make him go much faster.
But he couldn’t stop. Not while that presence was still following him.
Then... something changed.
The rain began to let up; the giant floating leaves gradually disappeared.
The water began to recede.
Noir continued climbing.
And, for the first time... he allowed himself to look back.
In the distance, amid the rain of mana... the gigantic serpent continued to watch him. It didn’t move a single meter further, as if that were the boundary of its territory.
Noir took a deep breath.
He continued flying.
The trees gradually fell behind them; the young dragon watched as the white wolf survived as well.
’Thank goodness...’
And as he crossed the vast Magic Valley for the last time... memories began to flash before his eyes, one after another.
In the darkness of that cave, when he was reincarnated and ate nothing but grass, he even thought he would become a vegetarian dragon.
When he encountered the golden sphere that led him to a monster that nearly killed him—and from which he gained his first ability.
Then there was Chrysola, the Golden Dragon, who, despite the short time he spent with her, left a lasting impression on him.
After leaving the cave, seeing the sky for the first time, and breathing in the clean air, free from any machines, just like in his past life.
The goblins, the smiles, the losses.
When he nearly died at the hands of the unknown monster that arrived in the Magic Valley, and because of the mysteries it holds, such as the door carved by a dragon.
Amanises and the endless afternoons spent studying human magic.
Uki.
Every defeat, every small step.
All of that had made him who he was now. He wasn’t the sickly man who had died in a hospital bed.
Nor was he that tiny dragon hatchling, unable to defend itself.
Now... He isn’t a human from Earth who died and was reincarnated as a dragon.
He was, quite simply...
Noir.
Of course, he’s still young despite his memories of his past life.
Still inexperienced, but capable of taking flight once more.
The wind blew against his face.
Ahead of him... The trees began to thin out; the abundant mana was gradually fading away.
The sky slowly changed color.
And, for the first time since he had been reincarnated... Noir was able to gaze upon the world that lay beyond the Magic Valley.
A vast world.
Unknown.
Full of dangers.
And also... Full of possibilities.
A smile slowly spread across his face.
"No matter what’s out there... I’m going to experience it all—the epic, the absurd, the ridiculous, and the beautiful."
The black wings spread out once more.
And, without looking back...
The young black dragon continued on his way as he began to see a road in the distance.
