Noir reacted purely on instinct. His Draconic Senses had detected the concentration of mana a fraction of a second before he heard the spell. Without thinking, he spread his wings and darted to the side.

The ground exploded beneath his feet.

No sooner had he left than enormous roots covered in white flowers burst through the ground where he had been just a moment before. The thick stems writhed like living snakes, trying to catch something that was no longer there.

’Why are you attacking me out of the blue? You’re mistaking me for a monster.’ Noir landed several meters behind him and slowly raised his head.

He didn’t like that last remark one bit—he didn’t even know why, but the mere fact that he was being mistaken for a monster disgusted him.

The young black dragon kept his gaze fixed on the woman with the fluffy tail and ears. They were waiting for her to make a move.

The young woman waved her staff again. New runes began to appear one after another around the gem that crowned the weapon.

Noir frowned slightly.

’Again.’

The roots didn’t sprout from beneath him this time. They emerged simultaneously in front, behind, and on both sides.

They were trying to trap him.

The young dragon struck the ground with its tail; its wings spread out in one swift motion as it propelled its body upward.

The roots collided with one another just a few tenths of a second later.

CRAAASH!!

Chunks of earth flew off in all directions.

Noir descended from the air. His claws began to glow with that dark radiance he knew so well. He had activated his [Draconic Claws] ability.

The sharp claws pierced through the thick roots with absolute ease; each swipe split the enormous stems as if they were mere damp branches.

The fragments of the crushed flowers fell heavily to the ground.

The half-human took a step back.

Noir tilted his head slightly.

’It seems she wasn’t expecting that.’

He seized the moment, bent his legs, and shot forward. He didn’t intend to kill her, but he did want to seriously injure her simply for calling him a monster.

But that didn’t mean he was a spiteful dragon; on the contrary, he was the kindest dragon there is... well, after Chrysola.

Besides, he just wanted to get close enough so she’d stop casting those annoying spells.

The distance vanished in an instant just as he was about to reach her; a wall of vines sprang up in front of the girl.

Noir didn’t slow down; the claw came down with full force.

BOOOOM!!

The impact shook the forest; the flowers shattered into hundreds of white petals, swept away by the wind.

The barrier of roots receded several meters before splitting in half.

Noir landed gently.

The half-human was still standing on the other side.

She didn’t seem injured. Just... more tense than before.

For a few seconds, neither of them made the slightest move.

The young dragon slowly exhaled, his eyes beginning to gleam with curiosity at the magic the young woman wielded.

’I wonder if I attack her. Will I be able to see more of her magic?’

Noir’s attitude changed completely: whereas before he had been on the defensive, now he wanted to see the young woman’s magic, since the runes that formed the magic circle were very different from the ones he had studied.

So, that piqued his curiosity.

’Let’s see what spell she casts now.’

The woman’s expression hardened, and her staff rose once more as the runes began to form a new magic circle.

And tiny flowers began to bloom around Noir.

They were minuscule—far too small to be dangerous.

However... the young dragon’s draconic senses began to convey a faint sense of warning.

’What are they doing...?’

The night breeze slowly carried the petals away.

Noir didn’t wait to find out. Although he was curious, he wasn’t crazy enough to test it on himself. He opened his mouth, and the heat immediately spread throughout his throat.

FWWOOOOOSH!!

The flames swept through everything, and the delicate petals vanished before they even came close to him.

They were consumed in an instant.

The fire advanced a few more meters.

Just a few meters.

Noir tilted his neck slightly at the last moment, deflecting the flames so they passed by the half-human without touching her.

He had no intention of killing her.

He just wanted to learn more about her magic.

The woman raised her staff, and the runes began to swirl around him once more. This time, not a single magic circle appeared, but two.

The mana lines began to intertwine, forming a structure far more complex than the previous ones.

Noir didn’t move. His eyes remained completely fixed on the runes.

’...They’re different again.’

They didn’t follow the same pattern. Each spell reorganized the structure from scratch.

Some runes remained the same; others changed position entirely. It was like watching someone write the same paragraph in a different language.

The half-human spoke:

"Blooming Spears."

The flowers covering the ground began to close one after another.

The stems shot up violently.

In barely a second, dozens of thorn-covered spears pierced the ground and shot toward Noir from every angle.

The young dragon bent its legs slightly and spread its wings; its scales took on the shape of black feathers and took on a metallic sheen; it had activated its [Feather Blades] ability.

The feathers shot out.

SHING!!

Each black projectile pierced several spears at once; the stems burst into a shower of white petals.

Noir watched as the runes vanished.

’Interesting, but why is she using so many runes...?’

Amanises had never used so many runes before, and Dragon Language doesn’t use runes, since it communicates directly with the world.

’Could this be a limitation of the demi-humans? Is their way of casting magic different from that of humans?’

He didn’t even realize that he had stopped thinking about the battle. Now he just wanted to understand.

The half-human raised her staff again, and the magic circle changed once more.

The roots disappeared; the flowers began to wilt.

Instead... enormous, thorn-covered vines descended from the treetops like living snakes.

The vines completely enveloped the young dragon; the tree trunks began to close in around him.

Noir swung his claws as if they were machetes cutting through the vines and walked out from among the remnants of the spell with utter calm.

His red eyes continued to watch the runes fading away around the staff.

’How interesting...’

Every spell.

Every structure.

Every variation.

It was completely different from everything he had learned from Amanises. Excitement began to well up inside him.

He had found something new, something he had never seen before, and he stopped a few meters away from the half-human.

The young woman began to cast another spell.

But this time... Noir spoke first, his voice full of excitement, as if he were a child walking into a huge candy store:

"Show me... More magic!"

The forest fell completely silent; the runes around the staff vanished all at once.

The young woman stood motionless; her pupils contracted.

"A-a...? ...A monster... that talks?"
