I Reincarnated As A Dragon With A Devourer System
Chapter 53: Is that all you want?"A-a...? ...A monster... that talks?"
Noir frowned in annoyance. He really doesn’t like being mistaken for a monster lacking in intelligence and genius—which is exactly what he is.
"I’m not a monster..."
The half-human seemed to regain some sense and gripped the staff more tightly—it trembled uncontrollably—and began to mutter incoherently.
"A-A... I a-attacked a forest spirit; if they find out what I’ve done, they’ll send me straight to the stake... I have to do something to win this spirit’s favor, or else my life is over..."
"..."
Noir, whose senses were keener than those of any other race, heard exactly what the young mage was saying and didn’t know what to say: it was the first time he had met someone with an imagination even wilder than his own.
But... a forest spirit? Why do they want to humiliate me like that? Well, at least he had promoted him: he went from monster to spirit.
’...Wait, did he say ’spirit’?’ Noir slowly opened his eyes at this new information: Spirits really do exist!
However, as he focused his gaze on the half-human, the young dragon noticed that she was still muttering increasingly incoherent words.
He glanced to the side, and Uki shook his head resignedly, but then his tongue dropped out as if he’d remembered he was a wolf. The golden sphere perched on one of the branches, flashing several times; it looked like it was having fun.
Noir let out a sigh and spoke, rising several meters above the ground, looking even more majestic and imposing.
"Woman... I’m not a spirit; don’t insult me like that."
The half-human sorceress looked up as her eyes seemed to grasp what she was seeing—and that was exactly what the young black dragon wanted.
"I am the one who stands at the top and rules the heavens—a dragon."
***
The half-human remained completely still; she didn’t even blink. Her blue eyes slowly moved from the young dragon’s beautiful, majestic black horns to his outstretched wings.
Then they returned to the red eyes and repeated the same route.
’Are you trying to memorize me?’ Noir nodded slightly.
The idea seemed reasonable.
After all, he, too, would have closely observed a different race just as he had done with her.
However... the half-human began to tremble; first her ears and tail, then her hands; even her staff vibrated slightly.
Noir watched the curious spectacle with interest.
’Could it be a magic spell?’
He waited for several seconds, hoping the runes would form a magic circle, but, unfortunately for him, absolutely nothing happened.
’No.’
’I think she’s just nervous.’
"U-um..."
The young woman slowly opened her mouth and closed it again; she repeated this several times, as if she were a fish. She tried to keep her composure, but failed.
She took a deep breath and said, as if she hadn’t heard correctly:
"A d-dragon...?"
"Yes."
Noir nodded casually; after all, he was in a world of magic where dragons were known to exist.
But the answer was so simple that, for a few seconds, neither of them said anything else.
Silence fell once more over the forest. All that could be heard was the rustling of the wind through the leaves.
The young woman took a step back, then another; her tail remained completely bristled.
’What a curious creature!’
Noir watched her with genuine fascination. Until now, he had only met goblins, Amanises, and Chrysola. Each one reacted completely differently.
The goblins adored him.
Amanises had taught him the basics of human magic.
Chrysola... well, she was just Chrysola.
But that half-human... seemed torn between running away and fainting.
’Half-humans are quite expressive.’
It was interesting—very interesting; the young dragon began to wag its tail curiously, watching the reactions of the young sorceress standing before it.
Her ears kept shifting position; her tail wouldn’t stop moving either. It seemed impossible to hide how she felt.
Noir began to wonder if all races with animal ears were like that.
’How convenient.’
The half-human swallowed hard and raised her staff again, clearly unsure of herself.
"B-but... they don’t exist..."
Noir blinked and frowned because she couldn’t quite get the words out; it wasn’t that hard, was it?
"What?"
"T-the dragons..."
She took a deep breath.
"They went extinct centuries ago."
"..."
The young dragon remained completely still.
"...What? Extinct?"
"That’s what all the books say..."
The half-human replied almost on autopilot.
"The last ones disappeared a very long time ago..."
"..."
Noir narrowed his eyes slightly. This new information took him completely by surprise. What do you mean, dragons were extinct? Wasn’t this a fantasy world?
Could it be that the dragons were hiding? The young dragon was growing more and more puzzled.
Then, he immediately remembered Chrysola and the gate in the Magic Valley when he first entered that beautiful and dangerous place.
And he remembered something else during all that time... he had never encountered another dragon besides the golden dragon in the cave where he was reincarnated.
Just one door that was connected to them.
’...Interesting.’
That could explain a lot, and maybe that’s why no one expected to find one.
The young woman kept watching him with an impossible mix of fear and curiosity.
"So..."
Noir spoke again, pausing briefly.
"Am I the first one you’ve ever seen?"
The young woman nodded so quickly that her huge hat almost flew off.
"..."
Noir wasn’t quite sure how to feel. On the one hand, it was nice, but on the other, it felt a little strange. It was like discovering that he belonged to a species the whole world thought was extinct.
’Uhm...’
It didn’t seem like bad news, but simply... different. It was as if, from one moment to the next, he had become a living legend.
’Ugh, this is going to complicate things for me.’
Noir could see trouble coming from miles away, but that wasn’t going to change his goal of exploring this mysterious world full of wonders and surprises like the one he had just encountered.
As he continued to think about it, he watched as the half-human began to relax very slowly.
She was still frightened, but she no longer seemed convinced that he was going to attack her.
’Good.’
That made things easier. Because Noir still had a much more important question, and he pointed at the staff with one of his claws.
"That magic."
The silver ears perked up again.
"Huh?"
"The one with the flowers."
The young dragon’s red eyes seemed to sparkle with genuine excitement.
"I want to see it again."
"..."
The half-human slowly opened her mouth.
"...Is that all you want?"
