I Reincarnated As A Dragon With A Devourer System
Chapter 60: What the heck? After a few hours, the path began to climb slowly. After crossing one last hill, the landscape suddenly opened up before them.
Noir, who until then had been absentmindedly gazing at the vast meadow, slowly raised his head.
"..."
The first thing he saw wasn’t the walls.
It was the creatures.
Dozens.
No...
Hundreds.
"What the hell? How can the atmosphere change like that in an instant?"
Huge six-legged beasts dragged entire carts without the slightest effort. Their bodies vaguely resembled bison, but thick plates of blue crystal grew from their shoulders, and with every step, specks of light fell from them like sparkling dust.
A group of tiny orange-furred foxes ran among the travelers, carrying small packages strapped to their backs. They leaped among the people with incredible agility until they disappeared into various shops.
In the sky... Flocks of completely transparent birds flew through the clouds; their bodies looked as if they were made of glass.
Every time the sunlight shone through their wings, the air was filled with tiny rainbows.
"..."
Noir remained completely still.
’...’
’What...?’
The change had been too drastic; he didn’t know what to do. He had expected something more medieval: horse-drawn carriages, city walls—everything simpler—not a fantasy city appearing out of nowhere.
Was it some magic or illusion used to avoid enemy kingdoms?
It was as if the world were slapping the young dragon in the face, telling him he was too naive.
The carriage continued on its way.
The city came into view, but it wasn’t what he had expected either; it wasn’t a huge gray fortress.
The wall was alive. Enormous trees grew directly out of the stone. Their roots ran down the entire structure as if embracing it.
The tree canopies rose dozens of meters above the towers. The leaves shimmered with a soft emerald hue.
Among the branches, small, white, monkey-like creatures could be seen leaping from tree to tree, carrying baskets of fruit for the vendors inside.
"..."
Noir observed absolutely everything. The enormous doors remained open.
There was no need for drawbridges. Two gigantic stone turtles slept on either side of the entrance; each was larger than a house.
Moss, flowers, and even small shrubs grew on their shells.
At first, he thought they were just statues.
Until one of them slowly opened a golden eye.
’...Like everything else, there can be such a huge change.’
Noir found it hard to believe that a mere monster could attack a village and terrify it so much, and yet a city like this could be considered normal.
Travelers passed between the two as if it were perfectly normal. As if living alongside such creatures were the most ordinary thing in the world.
Five enormous lizards covered in green feathers were happily making their way along, while a little girl, sitting on one of them, stroked its head.
Further ahead... An older man was walking alongside a floating creature that looked like a giant jellyfish.
Luminous tentacles slowly descended around the man as tiny drops of water fell from them, watering the flowerpots that the shopkeepers had placed in front of their stores.
Noir blinked.
’This...’
’This really does look like a fantasy world.’
A smile slowly spread across his face. It was the same smile he’d worn when he first discovered magic.
He felt that every few meters, something completely different appeared.
Nothing seemed to repeat itself.
Nothing seemed normal.
Each creature served a different purpose. It was as if magic had ceased to be a luxury and had become part of everyday life.
Noir could hardly decide where to look.
Then he heard several children laughing.
One of them was chasing a small, furry sphere with butterfly wings.
The tiny creature kept changing colors as it ran away, laughing... yes, laughing.
The other children ran after it, bursting into laughter.
Noir opened his eyes slightly.
"..."
He slowly turned his head toward Arlene.
"..."
"Has it always been like this?"
The young woman followed his gaze and smiled naturally.
"Like what?"
Noir pointed at the entire city with a claw.
"Everything."
Arlene watched the creatures, the trees growing on the walls, the merchants, the magical mounts, and the crystalline birds flying across the sky for a few seconds.
Then she looked at him again, completely confused.
"...Sure."
She paused briefly.
"But this is the only city like that, since it’s on the border."
"..."
Noir felt something inside him tremble with excitement. If this... was just a frontier town.
Then what must the great capitals of this world be like?
***
The carriage finally passed through the enormous living gates.
Noir had expected to find cobblestone streets.
Instead... The city seemed built around nature, not on top of it.
The buildings were still there, of course, but no two were alike.
Some houses literally grew around gigantic trees whose roots passed through the stone walls without breaking them. Others were covered by thick vines laden with purple flowers that opened and closed their petals as people passed by.
Noir kept turning his head from side to side without stopping.
’...I don’t know where to look.’
Every few meters, something completely different appeared. On a street corner, an older woman was watering some flowerpots.
Not with water.
A small, cloud-like creature floated above her, letting a light rain fall only on the plants.
On another street, a group of enormous black cats slept peacefully on the rooftops.
Each one had four long tails.
Shopkeepers walked beneath them without disturbing them.
Arlene noticed Noir’s gaze.
"They’re Guardian Cats."
"Guardians?"
"Yes."
She pointed to one of them.
"If anyone tries to break in at night... they wake up."
As if it had overheard the conversation, one of the cats slowly opened a red eye.
It looked at Noir for a few seconds and then drifted back to sleep.
"..."
Noir smiled.
’I like them.’
The carriage continued on its way.
Shortly afterward, they arrived at the main market.
It was even more chaotic. But in a way that was completely different from what Noir had imagined.
It wasn’t just people shopping.
There were creatures everywhere.
An older man argued with a small creature covered in leaves that seemed to refuse to leave a basket full of fruit.
Two enormous, moss-covered wild boars were pulling a portable mill in which a baker was grinding wheat as they went.
"You’re really enjoying this."
"Yes."
The answer came immediately.
"Very much so."
The half-human smiled.
The carriage finally turned onto a much wider avenue.
The houses began to spread out; the buildings grew larger; several statues adorned the central square.
Finally... The carriage began to slow down.
Before them stood an enormous building constructed of gray stone and thick, dark wooden beams.
Unlike the rest of the city, that place was full of noise.
Laughter.
Arguments.
Swords clashing during training.
People were constantly coming and going. A huge steel emblem hung above the entrance. It depicted a sword crossed with a magic staff, both surrounded by a wreath of leaves.
Arlene raised her hand slightly.
"We’ve arrived."
Noir slowly stepped down from the carriage as he looked at the building with curiosity.
"What is this place?"
The half-human smiled.
"The Adventurers’ Guild."
