The small bronze plaque was still resting in Noir’s claws as they left the registration office.

It didn’t look like much.

"Is this enough to get us in?"

The half-human nodded as she tucked hers into a small pouch hanging from her belt.

"Only as long as we stay in Greenhollow."

Noir looked at the badge again for a few seconds before tucking it away among the folds of his cloak as well.

’Interesting.’

In the Magic Valley, he had never needed to prove who he was.

There, it was enough to survive.

Here, on the other hand, it seemed that even walking through a door required some authorization.

It didn’t bother him.

On the contrary.

It was yet another difference between the society of monsters... and that of humans.

The three of them returned to the guild’s main entrance.

Now that the registration was over, the guards barely glanced at them before returning to monitoring the constant flow of adventurers.

Arlene was walking a few steps ahead.

Her demeanor had changed slightly since they entered the city. She was still reserved, but she no longer seemed as tense as she had been during the journey.

Before they reached the front door, a woman’s voice called out to them from the side.

"Arlene?"

The young half-human looked up.

A woman with short, reddish hair approached, her expression clearly surprised. She was wearing reinforced leather armor and had a bow slung across her back. Behind her walked two other men, both with the same guild emblem sewn onto their cloaks.

"I thought you wouldn’t be coming back for a while."

Arlene let out a small smile.

"I’m glad to see you, too, Scarlett."

The archer let out a brief laugh before crossing her arms.

"You came back pretty quickly; I expected it would take you longer to complete the mission."

Noir watched the scene in silence. Although he could feel eyes on him, after all, his entire appearance drew quite a bit of attention, as did Uki’s, and especially the golden sphere resting on the wolf’s head, which, strangely, was completely still.

’Don’t tell me you’re shy?’

But he got no answer; the golden sphere ignored him completely.

The other two adventurers also approached.

One of them was a burly man with a thick beard who couldn’t stop smiling.

"Kakakaka! It’s good to see you again; I’d thought some monster had made you its lunch."

"I wasn’t that far off."

The answer immediately wiped the smiles off the group’s faces.

"What happened?"

Arlene stayed silent for a few seconds, then flashed an innocent, almost childlike smile as she scratched her head.

"Hahaha, no big deal, I just ran into some basdidos."

"No, don’t worry, I thought you’d run into some dangerous monster." Scarlett’s shoulders slumped, and she crossed her arms.

Noir could sense Arlene’s gaze and couldn’t help but snort indignantly to himself: How could she look at him that way? He was a good dragon; seriously, he was a very good dragon. How could she see him that way?

The burly man with the thick beard looked down at Noir and asked:

"Arlene, who are they?"

"They’re my new companions," she replied, gently stroking the white wolf that was calmly watching them.

Scarlett opened her eyes slightly. "New companions? So you don’t plan on coming back to our group...?" she said, her voice trailing off at the end.

Arlene smiled slightly without saying anything else.

They continued chatting for a little while longer.

The archer Scarlett asked questions, and the bearded man interrupted to ask about her new companions. Arlene took that opportunity to state that Noir was a guardian spirit of great antiquity.

The third barely spoke, but watched every detail with almost exaggerated attention.

Arlene finished answering her former classmates’ last questions, then said goodbye with a brief nod.

The small group dispersed once more amid the constant comings and goings of the guild. As soon as they disappeared into the crowd, Noir turned his gaze back to Arlene.

"They seem nice."

She let out a soft laugh.

"They are. Although they’re also pretty curious."

"I noticed."

Noir was convinced that, if the conversation had lasted a few more minutes, they would have started asking him questions, and he had no intention of answering them now.

The half-human gazed at the sun for a moment.

"Before I do anything else..."

Her stomach made a sound so clear that even several nearby adventurers turned their heads slightly.

"..."

"..."

Arlene put a hand to her stomach, completely embarrassed.

"I think we should eat first."

Noir nodded immediately.

"Now that’s an important mission."

The inn was just two blocks away from the guild.

It was a two-story building, built almost entirely of dark wood. Large flowerpots overflowing with flowers adorned the windows, and a fragrance wafted out from inside that even made Uki look up with interest.

The wolf began to wag his tail.

"Looks like someone’s hungry."

Uki responded with a bark.

Arlene pushed open the door, and the hustle and bustle from inside immediately engulfed them.

The tables were almost full.

Dust-covered adventurers laughed heartily as several servers made their way through the hall carrying trays that were impossible to balance.

In a corner, a bard played a lute while two dwarves argued over which of them had defeated the biggest monster.

Noir barely paid them any attention. His nose had just picked up on something much more important.

Meat.

Tons of meat—grilled, smoked, and cooked with spices he’d never smelled before.

The half-human asked for a table for three... though she corrected herself when she remembered the golden sphere.

"Well... for three and a half."

The innkeeper watched the small orb floating around Noir for a few seconds. She nodded.

It was clear that she had seen far stranger things. It wasn’t long before a huge tray was set on the table.

There were several cuts of roasted meat. Freshly baked bread, soup, cheeses, fruit. And a generous pile of cooked vegetables.

The aroma filled the entire table.

Noir gazed at the feast for a few seconds, and his expression darkened for a moment; the whole atmosphere reminded him of the goblins. He shook his head; this was no time to think about that.

Then he began to eat with surprising elegance. He cut off small pieces with his claws and calmly brought them to his mouth.

Arlene watched him curiously.

"You eat... pretty normally."

"Were you expecting something else?"

"A little."

The young black dragon said nothing more; he kept enjoying his meal.

Next to him, Uki was doing the same thing.

First, all the meat disappeared.

Then, the fish.

Later, the cheese.

Five minutes later... Only the vegetables were left on the table.

"..."

"..."

Noir stared at them; the vegetables stared back—well... not exactly. But he felt as if they were.

Beside him, Uki did the same thing: he slowly turned his head toward Noir, then looked back at the vegetables, and then back at Noir again.

The two of them seemed to have reached the same conclusion.

’Arlene can keep that.’

The half-human finished her soup and looked up. She found two pairs of eyes staring intently at the plate of vegetables.

"What’s going on?"

Noir pointed at the plate.

"That."

"The vegetables?"

"Yes."

"Aren’t you going to eat them?"

The young dragon slowly shook his head. Uki accompanied the gesture with a bark of absolute conviction.

Arlene sighed.

"They’re vegetables."

"I know."

"You can eat them, too."

Noir looked at them again.

"Are you sure? Meat has enough nutrients; there’s no need to eat it."

Before Arlene could answer, the golden sphere slowly descended until it came to rest on the plate and gave off a faint flash of light. And, with the utmost calm... it pushed a carrot until it was right in front of Noir.

The young dragon watched it.

The carrot remained motionless.

The sphere flashed insistently once more.

"It’s not going to work."

Another flash.

"No."

The sphere then pushed a small piece of broccoli toward him.

Noir carefully pushed it aside with a claw.

"Don’t push it."

The sphere placed it back in front of him.

Uki decided to step in; with an extremely delicate movement, he picked up the broccoli between his teeth... and carefully placed it in front of Arlene.

"Are you kids...?"
