After defeating his duplicate, Noir stared at the remains; he hadn’t sensed any abilities emanating from the crystal creature.

Instead, the dungeon had copied his body and his racial abilities—except Dragon Language, since the young black dragon wasn’t very proficient in it and expended a great deal of mana when using it.

But... Why didn’t the copy use the magic that Amanises had taught him in the Magic Valley? After all, it was something that could be copied, since Noir had seen part of Arlene’s battle.

Receiving no answer, the young dragon didn’t think much of it; pondering things he knew nothing about wasn’t his style, but the curiosity was there. He looked once more at the remains of his copy and considered devouring them.

But he had one major doubt: he sensed that he wouldn’t gain anything by devouring those fragments, since they had been created right there in the dungeon—they weren’t real monsters born from a massive accumulation of mana.

’Will I be able to get anything out of this? Well, I’ve got nothing to lose by trying.’

Noir crouched down and activated his unique ability.

[The unique Skill Devourer has been activated.]

Several shards of his copy slid down his throat with strange ease; he thought that swallowing them would cause him to cut himself, but the opposite happened: it was as if he were swallowing mints.

After he finished all the shards of crystal, absolutely nothing happened: no increase in his mana or strength; it was as if he had eaten crystal—nothing out of the ordinary.

The young black dragon just let out a long, disappointed sigh, even though he sensed they wouldn’t find anything; besides, what could you possibly get out of a glass? Sand?

Even with the disappointment still evident on his face, several status windows popped up. Noir’s reddish eyes widened in shock as he saw the new content that appeared.

’What the hell is this?!’

[Unknown information detected.]

[Source: Dungeon.]

[Processing incomplete.]

Noir tilted his head. Dungeon? Incomplete processing? What the hell did all this mean? Would he be able to create his own dungeon, like in many of those novels, and fill it with treasures and beautiful monster women?

So he hoped the system would have explained a little more, but... nothing else appeared, no explanation. Not even a description. Just those damn three lines.

The young dragon looked at the spot where his duplicate had once been, but it had already been devoured.

’Unknown information?’

Noir narrowed his eyes; it was very strange. No matter how hard he tried to make sense of it, he couldn’t come up with an answer.

’Maybe it was just a mistake.’

He shook his head. There was no point in dwelling on something he didn’t even understand. Besides, he had a dungeon to explore—that was much more important.

Noir looked up.

Arlene was several meters away, finishing up her inspection of the aftermath of her own battle.

The young half-human was still examining some crystalline fragments that had been scattered across the ground. Her expression was strange.

’What could she have seen to make her look like that?’

Noir approached slowly.

Uki trotted over and sniffed at some of the remaining fragments; he had ended his fight with relative ease.

The golden sphere slowly descended until it hovered above the young dragon’s head, claiming him as its throne, and for some reason, it seemed much more serious than before.

Noir watched it.

’Did you notice something, too?’

The sphere emitted a small flash. And then it went completely still again.

’Fantastic.’

Noir decided not to press the issue.

The three of them continued.

The crystal forest seemed to stretch on forever. As they moved away from the area where they had fought, the trees began to change slowly.

Some had completely transparent trunks. Others had greenish hues. Some even had bluish trunks that emitted a faint glow from their roots.

Each step produced a soft sound. The white grass crinkled beneath their paws and slowly closed again after they passed.

Arlene kept updating the map. Every few minutes she would stop to make a new note, and she muttered:

"The terrain doesn’t match either."

Noir looked at the parchment.

"What’s supposed to be here?"

"A lake."

Arlene pointed ahead.

"According to the map, there should be a small body of water beyond the forest."

Noir scanned the area with his Draconic Senses and detected nothing.

"There’s no lake."

"I know."

The half-human sighed.

"That means the map is practically useless."

Noir smiled.

"Then we’re doing a good job."

Arlene looked at him.

"How so?"

"We’re updating it."

"..."

The young woman decided not to answer.

They continued walking for several more minutes; the melody of the trees continued to accompany them.

But little by little... something began to change: the crystalline leaves stopped making sound. Until the forest fell completely silent.

Noir stopped.

"Did you notice that?"

Uki pricked up his ears.

Arlene nodded slowly.

"Yes."

The young dragon looked around. There was no wind; he couldn’t even hear his own footsteps. It was as if the forest had ceased to exist for a few seconds.

So...

Tin.

A metallic sound echoed in the distance.

Noir turned his head. It was coming from somewhere ahead of them.

"What’s that?"

Arlene put the map away.

"I don’t know."

They moved forward more cautiously. The terrain began to slope downward slowly; the trees grew sparser, and enormous crystal formations jutted from the ground like natural columns.

The sound could be heard again.

Tin.

Closer this time.

Noir sped up slightly; as he moved forward, the sound grew louder, as if confirming he was heading to the right place and that he would finally get some answers.

The three of them ran through the sparse bushes and trees, letting the wind they created whip against their faces.

And then... the forest ended. A huge open space appeared before them. In the center was something none of them expected to find.

A staircase.

It was a completely crystalline staircase.
