Noir approached slowly, sharpening his senses more and more in case a crystal monster suddenly appeared, but, fortunately, he didn’t detect anything; still, he didn’t let his guard down.

The steps descended slowly into the depths of the earth, each one illuminated from within by a faint blue light. But their end could not be seen, as if the darkness were devouring all the light.

’Will it be safe to go down these stairs? Won’t they break under my weight?’

Noir hesitated for a moment before placing a claw on the first step; the glass was cold, and a small, glowing crack appeared beneath his paw. He quickly withdrew his claw.

It looked like it could break at any moment. Wasn’t that a staircase leading up to the next level of the dungeon? That’s what the young dragon had assumed when he saw it, but now he wasn’t so sure.

Just one claw is visible in several shots. Could it support his entire weight? Although that wasn’t really a problem—after all, he could fly—Arlene and Uki weren’t so lucky.

"..."

Arlene looked at him for a few moments before asking:

"What’s going on?"

Noir paused for a few moments in silence before replying, "I think the stairs aren’t very sturdy."

"So, how are we going to get down?" She frowned and continued, "We have to go down to reach the next level and find a way back that won’t let us leave the dungeon."

The young dragon didn’t speak right away. He wanted to explore the entire dungeon and uncover all the mysteries that lay in wait; after all, the dungeons of this world were very different from the ones he had read about before his death; they had their own rules.

Noir just let out a small sigh and said:

"Well, we’ll have to go down and see if the next level hasn’t changed as much as this one."

Besides, he was curious: Why had the changes in the dungeon caused such a drastic shift? From the moment he saw the map, he knew something wasn’t right. What caused it? Was it the golden sphere that cast no reflection? Or was it him—a dragon born in a dungeon?

Although those questions were gnawing at Noir’s mind, his fellow guide planned to leave the dungeon and report the strange occurrence to the guild.

Then, the golden sphere appeared in front of the young dragon and flashed several times.

A grimace crossed Noir’s face, and he said:

"You don’t have to tell me that; I just want to know what’s going on here."

The sphere’s glow grew brighter and brighter, signaling its refusal.

"...Okay, I get it, we’ll leave." The young dragon said reluctantly, but then added with a mischievous smile: "Don’t tell me you want to leave. Why didn’t they reflect you? The big golden sphere wants to leave because it’s jealous."

The sphere emitted a bright flash that lit up the darkness for a few moments, but it quickly regained control, as if nothing the stupid young black dragon did could affect it. And it settled on Uki’s head, maintaining all its dignity.

Noir let out a satisfied laugh and looked back at the glass staircase. Then he looked at Arlene, who nodded.

Without another word, the young dragon began to fly as the young half-human and the white wolf descended.

Noir simply watched with a small smile.

***

The staircase went down much further than Noir had imagined. Each step was completely transparent, revealing a bluish darkness beneath his feet. As they descended, the light from the crystal forest slowly faded behind them.

Arlene’s footsteps echoed softly, and Uki walked beside her, ears pricked and eyes fixed on the darkness.

Noir, on the other hand, seemed to be enjoying every second. He couldn’t help but wonder how far the staircase went.

"How many steps do you think there are?"

Arlene looked up for a moment and then looked down again, afraid that a stair might break, and replied:

"I have no idea."

"More than a hundred?"

"Probably."

Noir smiled, revealing all his sharp teeth, and joked:

"More than a thousand?"

"I hope not."

The young dragon let out a little chuckle.

They continued descending. For several minutes, absolutely nothing happened: no monsters appeared, and they didn’t even come across a fork in the path.

It was simply an endless staircase leading down into the depths of the dungeon. But then, the temperature began to change.

The air grew more humid.

Noir raised his head slightly.

"Water?"

Arlene sensed it, too.

"Yes."

A few seconds later, they heard a sound.

Plop!

A drop of water, then another.

Noir flew a little faster, and the last few steps finally came into view. And when he touched down, he froze completely.

A gigantic lake stretched out before them. It was beautiful: the water was completely transparent, but it didn’t seem ordinary. Its entire interior was made of liquid crystal.

Small ripples across its surface reflected the bluish light from the walls, producing flashes that lit the entire enormous chamber. And floating on the surface were dozens of crystal lotuses. Their petals were translucent and displayed different shades of blue, green, and white.

Every time a breeze swept across the lake, the petals moved gently, just like real flowers.

Noir slowly approached the edge and reached out a claw toward the surface; as it touched the crystal-clear water, a small ripple spread out. The nearby lotuses swayed gently.

"It’s real..." Noir tilted her head, frowning: "Real?"

"It’s not real water." Arlene slowly pulled her hand out of the ’water’ and added, "It behaves exactly like water."

The young dragon narrowed his eyes.

He extended his draconic senses and detected an enormous amount of mana flowing through the lake. But he saw something: in the center of the lake, far from the shore, there was a small structure.

A little hut, like the ones that appear in cultivation novels, where the protagonist plays chess while sipping wine under the moonlight.

Although it seemed completely out of place, it was a simple structure, made of dark glass and white wood. It had a small sloped roof and a front door.

Noir blinked and asked incredulously:

"What is that?"

Noir scanned the surroundings with his senses.

Then he found something. A small stream of mana was flowing through the lake from the depths and heading straight for the structure.

"There’s something there," he said, without much surprise; it was all too calm for there not to be something hidden in that crystal-clear lake.

Arlene slowly sat up and narrowed her eyes.

"Something dangerous?"

"I don’t know. But I want to find out."

The half-human sighed.

"Of course you do."

Noir spread his wings slightly. But before he could move forward, a small metal plaque appeared above the gatehouse door, and the letters began to glow.
