I Reincarnated As A Dragon With A Devourer System
Chapter 78: Very romantic, isn’t it?After escaping before the guardian cats arrived, while the howls of the wolves still echoed in the air, Atreus watched from one of the rooftops as the guards finished off all the monsters.
It seemed they had the situation under control, and he had nothing else to do there anyway. The young black dragon’s attention was entirely focused on the girl he had just saved.
’There’s nothing left to do tonight.’
Carefully lifting the girl with his claws, taking care not to hurt her, Noir soared into the air. Earlier, he had thought about letting her ride on his back, just like in many novels.
But he felt a strong sense of rejection.
The mere idea of someone mounting him, as if he were a mere domesticated animal, repulsed him to the very depths of his dragon soul.
’Not over my dead body.’
After all, there were many things he could accept.
Being called the Great Dragon.
Being offered food.
Even some goblins would treat him as a sacred creature.
But becoming some mount... That was a complete lack of respect.
When he thought of the goblins, a grimace crossed his scaly face; the memories were painfully vivid, but there wasn’t much he could do about it.
He just had to keep going, as he had done so far, driven by curiosity, a thirst for knowledge, and all the mysteries this world holds. Noir had only taken a small step toward his dream; he has a long way to go.
After returning to the room, Noir laid the little girl down on the bed with the utmost care. The little girl had barely reacted; exhaustion and fear seemed to have sapped all her strength. Shortly afterward, she fell into a deep sleep.
Noir, for his part, decided he had done enough for one night. He settled down at one end of the bed, closed his eyes, and fell asleep almost immediately.
After all, he had performed a heroic deed, just as majestic and proud as a dragon should be. He had saved a little girl, defeated a pack of monsters, and escaped.
Isn’t that fitting for a Night Hero Dragon? Noir suppressed the urge to burst out laughing.
With the golden sphere perched on one of his majestic horns, the young black dragon said calmly:
"You saw that I didn’t do anything out of the ordinary—I just went out for a nighttime stroll. Next time, you can come with me; it’s pretty fun."
The golden sphere flashed, clearly pleased with the invitation from his loyal, extremely kind, charismatic, and very handsome dragon companion.
Noir smiled with satisfaction. Ever since he’d gone out on his nightly stroll, the golden orb hadn’t been very happy, so he’d suggested going out with it... Though now that he thought about it, that sounded like a good idea.
’Very romantic, isn’t it? Meh, that damn LED light—it shouldn’t even have a gender, so it would just be a night out with friends.’
Paying little attention to his thoughts, the young black dragon fell into a deep sleep.
***
Dawn broke slowly. The first rays of sunlight streamed through the bedroom windows, bathing the room in a soft golden light.
Noir was still asleep. His body lay completely relaxed on the bed, his wings slightly spread and one of his paws resting on the pillow. He seemed to be enjoying one of the best dreams of his new life.
The little girl was still asleep, clutching something very soft tightly, as if everything she had experienced had been nothing more than a bad dream.
Arlene sensed something and slowly opened her eyes, letting out a long yawn, while her tail felt a little heavy—which bothered her a bit—and she was still half-asleep.
"Good morning, Noir..." she murmured. Then she froze, blinking several times, thinking she was still asleep, but when she looked again, a little girl was sleeping next to her, clutching her tail as if it were a pillow.
Arlene stood completely still; all her lethargy and what little sleep she had left vanished completely.
She looked at the girl.
Then she looked at Noir.
Then she looked back at the girl.
Finally, she looked back at Noir.
The young black dragon continued to sleep peacefully, completely oblivious to the existential crisis he had just caused.
Arlene slowly let what she was holding slip from her hands.
"WHAT IS THAT!?"
The scream made Noir jump to her feet. Her wings spread wide, her claws dug into the bed, and her red eyes opened wide.
"What happened!? Are we under attack!?"
Noir looked around frantically. There was nothing there—just Uki, the golden sphere, and Arlene. Besides, how could they possibly be attacked at the inn? This wasn’t a manga! He flopped back down onto the bed.
"Good morning."
Arlene looked at him with an expression that seemed to waver between hitting him and demanding an explanation. Still, when she remembered that he was a dragon, she decided to do something else entirely.
"Good morning?"
"Yes."
"Why is there a little girl in my bed?"
Noir looked at the little girl who had woken up from the scream, then looked at Arlene.
"Good question."
"Noir!"
"I found her last night."
Arlene put a hand to her forehead.
"I figured as much."
"So we’re making progress."
"Progress toward what?!"
Noir yawned and slowly stretched his wings, like a lazy cat. He had been dreaming of Earth while playing GTA VI; just from the trailer he’d seen, the graphics were insane, and he thought:
"What a huge disappointment to have died before I could play it and visit the famous Tacon."
The young dragon let out a long, pained sigh and said lazily:
"I don’t know. I haven’t had breakfast yet."
Arlene stared at him for several seconds. She seemed to be trying to process everything.
"Wait... Did you save her?"
Noir nodded.
"Yes."
"And then you brought her here?"
"Yes."
"And then you went to sleep?"
"That, too."
Arlene opened her mouth. She closed it and opened it again.
"How can you sleep so soundly after bringing a stranger into the room?"
Noir looked at her with utter seriousness.
"Because I was tired." The answer was so simple that Arlene felt a headache coming on. And he added, flashing his teeth cheekily:
"So let’s go downstairs for breakfast; I’m in the mood for meat."
