I Reincarnated As A Dragon With A Devourer System
Chapter 77: What an interesting nightThe girl shuddered violently, but she didn’t stop running; if she stopped even for a second, she would be devoured by the hungry wolves closing in on her. But her mind kept asking: Who had spoken to her? Why had they offered to help her?
However, she couldn’t let her guard down. In this city, there were magical creatures capable of speaking. She had also heard stories about people who used their appearance to deceive others.
She couldn’t afford to fall into a trap. Her mother, who had just sacrificed her life to buy her some time, wasn’t alone; she had to keep running, but the barking grew louder.
One of the blood wolves picked up speed again and again, closing in on the girl, saliva dripping from its muzzle.
The girl felt her legs begin to give out. She couldn’t keep running anymore. Her breathing was too labored, and the pain in her bare feet had become unbearable. She glanced back for a moment.
The wolves’ reddish eyes glowed in the moonlight. They were getting closer and closer.
"No...!"
The little girl stumbled. Her tiny body lost its balance, and she fell onto the stone floor. She tried to get up right away, but her arms were shaking.
One of the wolves broke away from the pack, crouched down, and braced its hind legs. It was about to pounce on its delicious prey and savor every part of it, just as it had done with her mother.
The girl closed her eyes tightly, expecting to be devoured by the blood wolf, just as her mother had been moments earlier.
Then... a shadow passed over her.
FWOOSH!
The wind whipped her face. The wolf that was about to attack her stopped abruptly, just before its head was severed from its body, leaving a large pool of blood.
The girl slowly opened her eyes and froze in fear and terror; before her eyes was a creature she had never seen in her life.
The first thing she saw was a pair of black scales, glistening beautifully in the moonlight; then she saw the black, slightly long claws. She looked up for a better look at what appeared to be a lizard with one wing outstretched; just seeing it was enough to make fear well up deep in her heart.
Its red eyes shone with a strange intensity; it didn’t look like a creature from a nightmare. But it didn’t look like something a little girl should come across on a normal night, either.
And suddenly, the creature, baring all its sharp teeth, spoke:
"What an interesting night; I have to go on more nighttime strolls."

Noir looked at the girl curiously; at first, he had no intention of helping her in the slightest and was going to let the wolves devour her just as they had done to the other woman. Still, something about the girl caught his attention... or, at least, that’s what his senses were telling him: that this girl wasn’t normal.
That was precisely why he’d offered his help, though he hadn’t expected to be ignored... and, to be honest, it stung the young dragon a little, but that wasn’t the point; the point was that he’d already made his appearance.
However, what was he going to do with the girl now? He could feel the enormous guardian cats getting closer and closer. After thinking about it for a few seconds, he didn’t give it much thought; he’d figure out what to do with the girl later.
Noir tilted his head slightly.
"Are you okay?"
The girl opened her mouth, but closed it again, trying to form words that wouldn’t come, and looked at the blood wolves, who were afraid to approach her.
Noir narrowed his eyes, and a quick plan formed in his mind, which he immediately put into action. In a calm voice, yet one brimming with confidence, he said:
"So you were the ones who chased her."
One of the wolves growled, unaware that their bodies were reacting differently, with no intention of backing down and letting the prey they had chased for so long escape.
Noir smiled, amused; he was quite enjoying how things were unfolding, just as he’d planned, to earn a little of the girl’s trust.
"Do you still want to fight?"
The largest wolf bared its fangs and lunged forward. The others followed suit, following their leader.
The girl recoiled in terror.
Noir didn’t even flinch.
The first wolf leaped straight for his neck.
A black claw shot up.
FWOOSH!
The creature’s body shot forward before he could touch it and slammed into a nearby wall. The second wolf tried to attack from the side.
Noir spun around, and his tail struck with force; he felt several bones snap at once, bringing a satisfied smile to his lips.
CRACK!
The animal fell to the ground and lay motionless.
The other wolves stopped.
Noir watched them with a bored expression; after what he had experienced in the dungeon, these monsters held no appeal or interest for him whatsoever.
The blood wolves began to back away slowly, but one of them growled and lunged forward again.
Noir sighed and vanished. For a moment, the street fell completely silent.
Then...
BOOM!
The last wolf was hurled several meters away and fell next to the bodies of his companions.
Noir appeared before the girl once more.
The other wolves were no longer moving.
The fight was over.
The young dragon stared at the corpses for a few seconds. He had hoped to find something interesting, but his senses hadn’t detected anything special about them.
’Well, I guess I can’t always be lucky.’
Noir turned his gaze toward the little girl.
"Can you walk?"
The little girl stood motionless; her eyes remained fixed on him.
Noir tilted his head slightly.
"No?"
The little girl slowly shook her head.
Noir sighed.
"Great."
The sound of several people’s footsteps echoed in the distance. The guardian cats were approaching.
Noir looked toward the sound, then turned his gaze back to the girl; he had no intention of staying to explain what had happened.
"We have to go."
The girl opened her eyes in surprise.
"W... where?"
Noir smiled.
"To a place where there aren’t any wolves trying to eat you."
