After Arlene had talked at length about the anomalies in the Crystal Dungeon, they went to eat some delicious meat as payment for the mission they had accepted. Noir ate very little; he was too tired from having used up almost all his mana.

Then night fell over the city; the sun was replaced by the moon, which rose majestically in the sky, illuminating the area with its silvery rays.

The streets, which had once been bustling with life—magical creatures and people alike—were now much quieter; only a few guards and magical cats patrolled them.

In one of the inn’s rooms, Uki and Arlene were fast asleep; the golden sphere remained suspended above a small table, completely motionless.

And Noir... was also asleep. Or, at least, he had been for several hours.

The little dragon slowly opened his eyes and looked around listlessly, letting out a big yawn.

"What time is it?"

Then he remembered he was in a magical world and didn’t know if they had clocks, but he didn’t really care either. Noir felt that most of his mana had been restored, as his fatigue had vanished.

The young dragon yawned and stretched his front legs. He was now fully awake. And he wasn’t sleepy.

Noir looked toward the window; a faint silvery light was streaming in through it. He moved closer as he poked his head out... He froze.

The moon was enormous. Much bigger than he remembered. Its silvery light bathed the city’s rooftops and made the leaves of the trees growing on the city walls glisten.

The sky was clear. Thousands of stars stretched across it.

Noir stood there for several seconds, watching the scene. He had never been particularly fond of gazing at the moon. But that night seemed different.

The world looked completely different in that light.

The streets were quiet. Nocturnal creatures moved slowly across the rooftops. Even the usual noise of the city had vanished.

Noir smiled with satisfaction; nights always seemed quite beautiful to him in this world, since on Earth he could only see them through a screen.

"It’s pretty nice."

Before he could climb out the window, the golden sphere appeared in front of him, flashing repeatedly, as if questioning him and seeking an explanation for his sudden departure.

"I’m just going to take a little walk and clear my head; I won’t be doing anything out of the ordinary," Noir murmured, letting out a small sigh and feeling the cool night breeze on her majestic scales.

The sphere emitted a faint flash, as if to say, "You? Just going for a walk? That’s like saying politicians are honest and loyal."

The young black dragon rolled his eyes; he couldn’t believe what the golden orb thought of him. What had he done to deserve such treatment? As far as he was concerned, he was just a beautiful and very friendly dragon; he would never do anything questionable.

He shook his head and said:

"I’m just going for a walk, so don’t worry. The night is so beautiful—it’s perfect for a walk alone."

This time, the golden sphere gave off a much brighter glow; it moved to stand beside Uki.

Noir Paparedo, taken aback—that wretched sphere was way too dramatic; just because he was going out alone, it turned out like that. He lacked a little more maturity, something that Noir does have. He smiled and said goodbye:

"I’m not going too far."

The sphere still did not respond.

The young black dragon stood at the window, spread his majestic wings, and, with a gentle movement, began to rise. The night air brushed against his scales. It was cold, but pleasant.

He rose a few meters and then began to fly slowly over the rooftops. This time, he hadn’t used his [Shadow Movement] ability to enjoy the view—something he hadn’t done the night before, when he devoured a few animals that had volunteered to expand his encyclopedia.

Now, bathed in moonlight, the city seemed much more magical; it lacked the chaos of the day and instead possessed a strange solemnity that I had previously overlooked. Here and there, thousands of fireflies could be seen painting the air with different colors.

’It’s a shame I wasn’t able to experiment, since the fireflies were on the verge of extinction.’

Letting out a satisfied sigh, Noir gazed at the view, not wanting to draw too much attention to himself. After all... he had something else on his mind.

’I need to expand my encyclopedia a little more.’

Besides, the dungeon had reminded him of something important. His [Devourer] ability was still one of his greatest strengths. And it had been far too long since he’d last devoured something truly useful.

He still remembers very clearly what appeared when he devoured his crystal copy. Although that wasn’t what mattered to him right now; he just wanted to take a nice but entertaining nighttime stroll after a long day.

Noir slowly left the inhabited area, soaring into the sky until he landed on a branch, and his draconic senses expanded greatly, taking in everything around him.

Then, a few hundred meters from where their dragon senses were focused, they sensed something quite strange that caught the attention of the young black dragon, who had been resting on a branch.

He looked down and saw those enormous guard cats rushing in a specific direction, and a smile spread across his face as his emerald-red eyes took on a faint glow.

"Well, let’s see what happens."

With his barely noticeable presence, Noir began to follow the guardian cats, hoping to see something interesting.

***

In the moonlight.

A mother and her daughter were moving quickly, zigzagging through the city streets. They were barefoot, leaving their footprints on the road.

But they weren’t the only ones running.

From the shadows, a pack of blood wolves was following them, closing the gap between them and the wolves more and more.

The first one pounced without warning, snapping its jaws shut with a wet crunch as it struck the mother’s calf. The bone shattered instantly, like dry wood.

The woman screamed in pain, just before another wolf leaped onto her shoulder and tore off a chunk of flesh, exposing her throbbing shoulder blade.

She fell to the ground. She had no chance to get back up.

The girl, with tears streaming down her cheeks, couldn’t bring herself to look back as the blood wolves’ barking closed in on her once more—until she heard an unfamiliar voice.
