I Reincarnated As A Dragon With A Devourer System

Chapter 80: It’s on the other side of the continent

Breakfast ended up being much calmer than Arlene had expected.

Or, at least, as calm as a breakfast could be when a demon girl was sitting next to a young black dragon, while a half-human tried to process that all of this was actually happening.

Noir was devouring a huge piece of meat with complete concentration.

The girl remained seated next to him.

And Arlene watched them from the other end of the table.

The silence lasted for several minutes.

Finally, Noir looked up.

"I have a question."

Arlene closed her eyes.

"Again..."

"Why, every time I say that, do you act as if I’ve committed a crime?"

"Because it usually ends badly. Ever since I met you, nothing has gone normally; it was as if I were a walking disaster." Arlene was completely honest; she didn’t even blink.

"How rude! Just because I have a little freedom, you treat me like I’m some weird dragon." Noir didn’t like that at all; he was satisfying his curiosity. Was that a sin?

He let out a sigh and adopted a more serious expression.

"But putting that aside..."

The young dragon turned his gaze toward the girl.

He immediately lowered his head.

One of her small hands was still clutching one end of his tail, though this time it didn’t seem to be out of fear. Rather... she seemed to have decided that this spot belonged to her.

’My tail no longer belongs to me.’

He twitched the tip slightly, and the girl followed it with her eyes. The little dragon remained silent for a few seconds.

The half-human raised an eyebrow and let out a long sigh.

"Are you going to ask the question or keep playing with your tail?"

"I’m investigating."

"Investigating what?"

"The extent of her obsession."

Arlene brought her hand to her forehead.

"Please, just ask the question."

Noir looked at the girl again. This time, his expression grew slightly more serious.

He didn’t want to scare her.

After all, he had only just met her the night before and had already discovered that she probably belonged to a race completely different from the one they knew. But there was something that kept running through his mind.

The monsters.

The chase.

The young dragon rested his front paws on the table and asked calmly:

"Why were those monsters chasing you?"

The girl stood motionless.

The smile faded from Noir’s face.

Arlene stopped joking, too.

For several seconds, no one said a word.

The little demon slowly lowered her gaze and clenched her fingers around her black tail. Then she said in a low voice:

"Because... Because they want to find me."

"I figured as much."

Arlene shot him a look, as if to ask how he could be so calm in a situation like this.

Noir raised a claw, like the good, well-mannered dragon that he is.

"I’m helping."

The girl took a deep breath. Her reddish eyes began to lose the little peace they had regained during breakfast.

"My uncle..."

Noir stood still, tilted his head in confusion, and asked:

"Your uncle?"

The girl nodded slowly.

"He wants me to die."

’Wow, that escalated really fast. Can’t he slow down a bit or something?’ Thought the young dragon, as he began to get a sense of what was happening.

Arlene frowned and asked:

"Why?"

The little girl didn’t answer right away. She seemed to be trying to find the right words. Or maybe she didn’t want to remember. Her little hands began to tremble.

"Because... if I die..."

The girl stopped.

Noir narrowed his eyes. His curiosity began to stir slowly.

"So?"

She looked up; her reddish eyes met Noir’s.

"Then he’ll be the next demon king."

The young black dragon stood there motionless, realizing that the situation was far from simple.

"So you’re a demon princess—what a surprise."

Arlene stared at him in disbelief.

"Is that all?"

Noir raised a claw again, clearly enjoying Arlene’s reactions, which were all over the place. He understood once more why the golden sphere had such an effect on him. Teasing someone was so much fun!

"I’m processing this."

"We just found out you brought a demon princess into our room!" Arlene exclaimed, completely losing her temper.

"Technically, we still don’t know if she’s a princess."

The little girl slowly raised her hand.

"I’m a princess."

Noir fell silent again before letting out a long, disappointed sigh.

’I didn’t expect the demon princess to be a little girl. Where’s my demon princess who knows how to cook? Fate, don’t be so cruel to this beautiful dragon.’

For a few seconds, no one said a word. The golden sphere began to spin slowly on the table.

Noir looked at the sphere and cleared his throat.

"Well... That clears up a few things."

"Some things?!"

"Yes."

"WHAT THINGS?!"

Noir was already starting to get annoyed. Why was Arlene so upset? She hadn’t been like this when he first met her; they hadn’t even been together for a month. How could she be so loud? With a sigh, he pointed at the girl.

"Her uncle wants to kill her."

"That’s not the point..."

"What do you mean, it isn’t?"

Arlene opened her mouth, but said nothing.

Noir took advantage of the silence to continue.

"Her uncle wants to kill her because he wants to become the Demon King."

"Yes."

"She’s a princess."

"Yes."

"And she appeared in the middle of a human city while several monsters were trying to capture her."

Noir nodded slowly, as if recalling the events of the previous night.

"So, it’s a pretty complicated situation."

Arlene looked at him for several seconds.

"That’s the smartest thing you’ve said this morning."

The little dragon smiled.

"Thanks."

"That wasn’t a compliment."

"I’ll take it anyway."

The little girl watched them in silence. For some reason, this absurd conversation seemed to have eased her nervousness a little.

Noir looked at her again. This time, his voice was softer.

"How did you get here?"

The little demon looked down.

"I don’t know."

"You don’t know?"

"I was traveling with some people." Her expression changed as tears welled up in her eyes, and she added, "But we were attacked."

Noir stopped smiling.

"Your uncle?"

The girl slowly shook her head.

"I don’t know who they were."

That answer made the young dragon narrow his eyes. It didn’t seem strange to him that she didn’t know who had attacked them, since her uncle wanted to kill her; therefore, there were many possibilities.

He could have sent assassins or mercenaries. He might even have used monsters. But... why had she ended up so far from home?

Noir looked at Arlene, this time with a serious expression, and asked.

"I have another question."

The half-human sighed deeply.

"Of course you do."

"Where exactly is the Demon Realm?"

Arlene’s expression changed immediately.

"It’s on the other side of the continent."
