As he devoured the Cerdor’s enormous body, Noir intended to leave not even a single bone behind, so that his unique ability, Devourer, could absorb every last nutrient and biological fragment.

How could he possibly let that absurd resistance slip through his fingers? Feeling his body grow stronger and his mana reserves continue to rise, Noir sensed the animal’s information flooding into his mind and, at the same time, appearing in his encyclopedia.

The young dragon continued eating; this time, he quickly swallowed several organs, as if they were spaghetti, while licking the blood from his snout. He let out a satisfied sigh:

"This is way too delicious; all I need is some bread to make it taste like a hamburger."

He lowered his head and continued, with the system notification screen appearing again, analyzing everything he was devouring.

[Skill acquired...]

A smile spread across Noir’s face when he saw that system notification: it didn’t say "fragment"—he’d actually obtained a full ability, exactly what he wanted! How could he not be happy? A high-fat meal, plus a new ability.

However, the next notification windows made the young dragon’s eyes widen in surprise. It was the first time something like this had appeared since he’d devoured his first creature.

[A compatible Skill, "Stone Hide," has been found...]

[The "Stone Hide" Skill has evolved...]

Noir stopped chewing.

For a few seconds, he stood completely still in front of the enormous corpse of the Cerdor. Even the piece of meat he was holding in his claws remained suspended halfway to his mouth.

His red pupils narrowed.

"...What?"

The golden sphere, which had been floating near his head, slowly descended until it was directly in front of him. Several particles of light began to swirl around it, as if it, too, were watching the screen.

Noir blinked several times.

"Is my ability evolving?"

He hadn’t had time to finish the sentence when a new sensation coursed through his body. Mana began to flow beneath his scales. It wasn’t like when he activated [Stone Hide].

This time it was different.

Much deeper.

Noir felt that energy course through every part of his body, traveling down his neck, spreading across his wings, and slowly sliding down his legs.

The black scales began to emit a faint grayish glow.

The young dragon looked down.

"Uh..."

For a few seconds, nothing happened.

"Is that it?"

A new window appeared in front of him.

[Skill Evolved.]

[Stone Hide → Mineral Armor.]

Noir opened his eyes.

"Mineral Armor?"

The information immediately came to mind.

[Mineral Armor.]

An advanced defensive ability.

Allows the user to condense mana and minerals from the environment onto their scales.

Significantly increases physical resistance. The level of defense depends on the amount of mana used.

Noir remained silent. Then, his gaze slowly turned toward the enormous corpse of the Cerdor. He then looked at the stone plates covering its body.

And finally... A smile began to spread across his face.

"Ah..."

The smile grew wider.

"Now that’s interesting."

Up until that moment, [Stone Hide] had only hardened his scales. It was useful, but it had its limits. It could only enhance something he already possessed.

However... [Mineral Armor] was different. Noir slowly raised a claw, waiting for the next notification window to appear.

[The Cerdor monster has been completely devoured...]

[Biological analysis complete.]

[Acquired trait: Load-bearing Muscles.]

[Acquired ability: Iron Load.]

Noir stood motionless as the latest notifications appeared. Then he looked at the spot where, just a few minutes ago, the Cerdor’s enormous corpse had lain. Now... there was absolutely nothing left.

The young black dragon slowly licked the blood from his snout, let out a satisfied sigh, and then opened the status window, which he had completely forgotten about.

Encyclopedia.

’And to think that that same state inventory was empty when I reincarnated; now I have so many skills.’

Noir turned her attention to "Encyclopedia," going straight to the creatures section, where the description of the monster she had just devoured appeared.

[Encyclopedia of Creatures]

Name: Cerdor

Description:

The Cerdor is a massive beast of burden native to the continent’s grasslands and forested regions. It has a muscular build specialized for charging. Despite its enormous size, it can accelerate rapidly, using its weight and long tusks to destroy obstacles and enemies.

Ability: [Iron Load]

Biological Traits: [Charge Muscles], [Mineralized Skin], [Monstrous Digestion]

Note: It is not recommended to confront a Cerdor head-on while it is charging.

After reading the description of the Cerdor, Noir closed the windows; he hadn’t expected to make such a huge profit just by devouring such a large animal, though that was the least of his concerns.

Now that he was done with everything, he calmly made his way to the carriage. He had a journey ahead of him.

***

The carriage continued on its way after Noir finished his lunch.

For the next few hours, the landscape remained peaceful. Meadows stretched out on both sides of the road, and the sound of the wheels once again became the group’s only constant companion.

However, little by little, something began to change.

Noir, who had been resting on the roof of the carriage, slowly raised his head.

At first, there were just a few stones.

Large rocks sticking out of the grass.

Then more began to appear.

One after another.

The young dragon narrowed his eyes as the carriage moved slowly forward. The landscape ahead of them changed until hundreds of enormous vertical stones covered the meadows.

Some were barely as tall as Noir. Others were several times taller than the carriage. They looked like ancient stone pillars that someone had placed there thousands of years ago.

Noir slowly sat up.

"Now that’s something new."

The path cut straight through that strange landscape. On both sides, enormous rocks stretched as far as the eye could see, covering the meadows like a silent forest.

But the strangest thing wasn’t how many there were.

Many of them had symbols engraved on them.

Noir flapped his wings slightly and descended to one of the stones while the carriage continued moving slowly forward.

He approached it.

His red eyes scanned the strange engravings. Some looked like figures of unknown creatures. Others were circular symbols. And some... Noir had no idea what they meant.

"What is this place?"

Arlene looked out at the landscape from the driver’s seat and frowned slightly.

"The Silent Stones."

Noir turned his head.

"That doesn’t explain a thing."

"That’s the name they gave it."

"And what are they?"

Arlene was silent for a few seconds.

"I don’t know."

Noir looked at the enormous stones once more.

Then he gazed at the blue and white flowers growing around their bases, spreading out like a sea of colors among the grass.

A faint smile appeared on his face.

The world felt strange again.

Magical.

Mysterious.

And, for some reason, Noir preferred that landscape far more than the endless prairies they had been crossing all day.

"All right."

He leaped back onto the roof of the carriage.

"At least this trip has just gotten a little more interesting."

The golden sphere began to spin above his head.

And as the carriage made its way among the ancient stones, Noir couldn’t help but wonder who had placed them there.

Or, more importantly... what kind of creatures had existed in that place before them.
