As they ventured deeper into the Silent Stones, the landscape grew increasingly strange. Monoliths appeared on both sides of the path: some perfectly straight, others tilted at impossible angles.

Many were covered in moss and small plants, while others remained completely bare, as if the passage of time refused to leave its mark on them.

"This is much better," he murmured as he looked up at a huge rock jutting several meters above the carriage. "At least now there’s something to look at."

The golden sphere floated above his head and began to spin slowly. Noir watched it out of the corner of his eye before smiling.

"Don’t tell me you prefer the grasslands. We spent hours on end looking at grass. Grass, trees, more grass, and some boring animals. This place has personality."

From the driver’s seat, Arlene looked up.

"Personality?"

"Yeah. Look at those things. They look old."

"They are old," Arlene said dryly.

Noir turned his head.

"That doesn’t explain much either."

Arlene let out a sigh as she held the reins.

"The Silent Stones have been known for a long time. No one knows who placed them here or how long they’ve been here. There are many stories about them, but none have been able to prove anything."

The young black dragon narrowed his eyes as he looked at the enormous rocks once more.

"What kind of stories?"

"The usual ones. Some say ancient gods placed them there. Others believe they were monuments of a vanished civilization. Some people believe the stones are tombs."

Noir remained silent. His red eyes slowly scanned the monoliths.

"Graves?"

"We don’t know."

"That’s not very reassuring."

"You’re the one who wanted the trip to be interesting."

"It’s one thing to be interested, and another to sleep on top of a giant grave. We have to respect the dead."

"Respect for the dead?" Arlene let out a little chuckle. "You didn’t seem to feel that way when you devoured that bandit, and you can’t sleep on top of some graves out of respect."

Noir raised a claw; he didn’t agree in the slightest with what that half-human was saying.

"This and that are two different things; you wouldn’t understand even if I explained it to you."

This time Arlene burst out laughing even harder, almost to the point of tears, as if she had heard the funniest joke in the world.

Noir ignored her and turned his attention to Uki; ever since he’d met Arlene, he hadn’t paid him much attention... but seeing him sleep so peacefully, he didn’t seem too bothered by it.

’Well, I’ll make it up to him later with some food or find him a she-wolf to let off some steam... Hmm, what a great dragon friend I am—I should give myself a prize.’

Putting aside those absurd thoughts, the young dragon planned to do something for Uki; he felt a little bad, and he wasn’t the type to forget his friends.

The carriage continued for several hours. Little by little, the sun began to sink toward the horizon, and the enormous rocks cast increasingly long shadows across the road.

The landscape, which had seemed strange during the day, took on a completely different appearance in the orange light of sunset.

Noir remained lying on the roof of the carriage; having devoured the Cerdor, he didn’t feel much like seeking out another fight either.

He had acquired new abilities.

His body felt stronger. And although he couldn’t quite explain it, something inside him seemed different.

The young dragon slowly moved one of his wings. Then he stretched out a leg and, finally, wagged his tail.

The little demon princess, who had been watching him from below, narrowed her eyes.

Noir opened one of his own eyes and asked her:

"What are you doing?

The girl didn’t answer right away. She kept looking at him for several seconds, as if trying to figure something out. Finally, she raised a hand and pointed at his body.

"You’re bigger."

"Huh?" Noir blinked.

The girl looked at him intently again.

"You used to be smaller."

The young dragon remained motionless.

Arlene, who had been listening to the conversation, turned her head slightly.

"What are you talking about?"

The demon princess pointed at Noir.

"You’ve grown."

The silence lingered for a few seconds.

Noir slowly lowered his gaze to his own body. He looked at his legs, then his torso, and finally his wings. He hadn’t noticed any significant changes, though he hadn’t had time to stop and examine himself since he’d devoured the enormous Cerdor.

"Me?"

The girl nodded.

"Yes."

Noir wagged his tail again.

The little demon opened her eyes a little wider.

"Your tail is so much bigger!"

The young dragon froze completely.

Arlene let out a little chuckle.

"Your tail?"

The little girl spread both her hands, trying to show how much she had grown.

"It used to be like this."

Then she moved her hands apart.

"Now it’s much bigger."

Noir stared at his claws for several seconds.

"That’s still a terrible explanation."

"But it’s true."

The young dragon looked at his tail again. Now that he was paying attention, he began to think that maybe the girl was right. It wasn’t a huge difference, but it seemed slightly longer and thicker than before.

Arlene also looked at him for a few seconds.

"Come to think of it..."

Noir immediately looked up.

"What?"

"I think you have grown a little."

His red pupils began to glow.

"Really?"

"Not really."

"That doesn’t matter."

"Your wings look a little bigger, and so do your legs."

Noir slowly sat up, spread his wings, and then raised his head proudly.

"I see."

Arlene frowned.

"Don’t give me that look."

"What look?" The proud smile wouldn’t fade from Noir’s face.

"That look you get when you’ve just realized how amazing you are," Arlene said, smacking her lips.

Noir flashed a wide grin and blurted out, "But I already knew I was amazing."

Arlene let out a long sigh.

The demon princess wrapped her arms around the tip of her tail once more.

Noir immediately looked down.

"That’s still mine."

The girl shook her head.

"What do you mean, no? It’s my tail, not yours; if you want a new one, there’s that woman over there with the horses."

"It’s my tail."

Noir opened his eyes.

"It’s literally my tail!"

The little demon hugged him even tighter.

"It’s bigger now."

"That doesn’t change a thing!"

Arlene started laughing.

Noir slowly turned her head.

"Don’t laugh."
