Chapter 248: Chapter 137: Horror
In the early morning, sunlight scattered across the sparkling sea as Busan Port slowly awoke.
In nearby Haeundae, local fishermen were already busy, braving the cold wind. They skillfully mended their nets, preparing to head out to sea. Their faces showed the hope of a good catch, mixed with an unease and numbness hidden deep in their eyes.
By the edge of the small fishing harbor, the seafood market was bustling with activity. Stalls were laden with a vast array of fresh seafood: octopus, crabs, sea fish, and more.
Many vendors enthusiastically hawked their wares, haggling with customers. The air was thick with the salty tang of the sea and the lively buzz of daily life.
But just then, a car sped past on the road in front of the seafood market.
Inside the car was Jin Yuanji, the president of the West Yuan Group, who had just rushed over from headquarters.
His eyes were filled with anxiety and fury. Seeing the driver waiting at a red light, he snapped irritably, "Faster!"
"President, it’s a..."
Fortunately, the light turned green right then. The driver let out a silent sigh of relief, inwardly sneering at Jin Yuanji. ’Asshole! Idiot! Taking it out on a small fry like me. Serves you right that your company is in trouble!’
After two intersections.
The car screeched to a halt at the entrance of West Yuan Group’s eel fry aquaculture base in Haeundae. Jin Yuanji shoved the door open, scrambled out frantically with his secretary, and didn’t even bother to close the car door behind him.
Park Dachang, the Vice President in charge of local operations, had already been there for two hours.
As soon as he arrived at the base and saw Park Dachang’s grim expression, Jin Yuanji boomed, "Dachang, what’s the situation?"
Startled, Park Dachang turned to the anxious president, his own expression a mixture of awkwardness and helplessness. "S-sir! President! The technical department is working on a solution."
Hearing this, Jin Yuanji knew he was being given the runaround and immediately roared, "Damn it! I want a straight answer, now!"
Han Yingze, the head of the technical department’s fry cultivation project, knew he couldn’t hide it any longer. Steeling himself, he lowered his head and answered, "Mr. President, I’m very sorry. There’s a serious problem with these eel fry. They might not survive more than four months."
"What? How could this happen? Jiang..." The hysterical Jin Yuanji was about to curse Jiang Anye, but then he remembered the man was already dead. The thought, combined with the memory of the Ryukyu West Sea Company being ruined by the Hailufeng Company, sent a chill down his spine. His voice dropped to a low mutter, his eyes flickering with suspicion and uncertainty as he mumbled to himself:
"Could they have given us fake technology on purpose? Damn it! God damn it!"
Looking at the densely packed glass eels in the cultivation tank, Jin Yuanji grew more certain of his suspicions. His heart bled at the sight.
Beside him, Park Dachang and Han Yingze didn’t dare say a word, afraid to set him off.
For a moment, a heavy, oppressive silence fell over the cultivation facility.
Forcing himself to calm down, Jin Yuanji stared intently at the cultivation tank. After a moment, he raised his head and looked at the head of technology, Han Yingze, again.
"Dr. Han, there shouldn’t be a problem if we sell the eel fry now, right?"
"We can’t, President," Han Yingze said, squirming under the president’s gaze.
Jin Yuanji demanded sharply, "Why not? The eel fry won’t die for another four months anyway! The markets in Europe and America mainly consume eel fry; they don’t farm them."
GULP. Han Yingze swallowed and quickly explained, "President, in their glass eel stage, these fry have high levels of residual hormones and chemical agents. They need to be fed for about half a month to metabolize these residues. Otherwise, our product will never pass the food safety inspections in Europe and America."
"What?"
Han Yingze added, "What’s more, two of the chemical components are fat-soluble, which means they’ll remain in the eels’ bodies for about six months. The presence of these two chemicals is forbidden in most markets!"
Jin Yuanji’s face twisted into a snarl. "Can we use other drugs to get rid of those two components?" he asked, his voice trembling.
Although he knew his answer would drive the president to despair, Han Yingze had no intention of hiding the truth. After all, if he concealed it now and something went wrong later, he’d be the first one to take the fall. He could only shake his head helplessly. "I’m sorry. They’re fat-soluble drugs. Besides the eels metabolizing them naturally, external medications are unlikely to work. In fact, they might even cause the eel fry to die sooner."
"Hah... hah... I don’t believe it!" Jin Yuanji panted, pointing at another technician. He grabbed the man by his collar, his eyes wild with madness.
"You! Tell me! There’s a way to fix this, right? Right?!"
The technician couldn’t help but curse inwardly, ’Idiot! Do you really think I’m God?’ Out loud, however, he answered awkwardly, "President, I’m very sorry, but I agree with my colleagues. The fat-soluble drug components in the eel fry cannot be removed at this time."
"Asshole! Useless trash!" Jin Yuanji shoved the technician to the ground. He then turned to Han Yingze and the others, roaring furiously, "What the hell kind of research did you do? Why didn’t you discover the problems with the technology sooner? You will all take full responsibility for this project’s failure!"
"You’re the idiot!" Han Yingze couldn’t take it anymore and shot back, "Jin Yuanji, this is your own greed talking! What does this have to do with us? I recommended holding off on production from the very beginning so we could study the technology first, but none of you listened! Now that there’s a problem, you want to shift the blame to us? To hell with this, I quit!"
In truth, after studying the formula earlier, Han Yingze and the others had suspected there might be a problem with it, but they hadn’t been able to pinpoint what it was at the time.
