Chapter 249: Chapter 137: Horror (Middle)
The sudden transformation of those two chemicals into fat-soluble substances, in particular, had stunned Han Yingze and his team.
At first, they had studied all the chemicals in the formula. They knew their half-lives and estimated that none would last longer than half a month after the eel fry hatched.
However, once the eel fry actually hatched, they ran tests and realized things were far beyond their expectations.
The two chemicals, which were supposed to be water-soluble, had suddenly become fat-soluble. They had entered the fatty tissues of the eel fry, extending their half-life from one week to six months.
As it happened, these two chemical compounds were mandatory testing items in the global food industry. The minimum content standards, especially in Europe and America and the East Asia Region, were extremely strict.
In fact, they had discovered the problem a week ago, right after the eel fry hatched en masse. They had been trying to solve it ever since, but unfortunately, they had underestimated Jiang Miao’s methods.
The two chemicals acted directly on the eels’ genes to induce sex change and spawning. If the chemicals didn’t enter the cells, the eels couldn’t transform and lay eggs.
In other words, using the chemicals was the only way to induce sex change and spawning, but the drugs would then be retained in the fatty tissue, extending their half-life to about six months. If they didn’t use the two chemicals, they couldn’t produce any eel fry at all.
As for improving the formula, that was out of the question.
Unless they could cheat the system like Jiang Miao, they might as well just give up.
Having vented his frustrations, Han Yingze had no sooner finished speaking than he ripped the ID badge from his neck and slapped it across the face of Jin Yuanji, who was too stunned by the outburst to react.
The other researchers and technicians also tore off their badges, threw them to the floor, and walked out with Han Yingze.
"You bastards! You useless pieces of trash! I’ll sue you!" Jin Yuanji roared, flailing in a fit of impotent rage.
"Do what you want, you idiot!" Han Yingze shot back without turning around, and left.
Watching the backs of the dozen or so technicians as they left, Jin Yuanji’s chest heaved. Seeing his pale face and the cold sweat breaking out on his body, his secretary quickly helped him to a nearby seat.
Park Dachang, who was also there, stood awkwardly to the side, not knowing what to do.
He sat there in a daze for a while.
Jin Yuanji’s face, however, grew paler by the second.
His earlier outburst had drained him of his strength and energy. A feeling of utter exhaustion washed over him, especially when he thought about the investments made over the past three months, and the mountain of contracts his son, Jin Haorui, had signed in Europe and America.
Suddenly, a thought struck him. He snatched up his phone and quickly dialed an international number.
BEEP. BEEP. BEEP.
"Hello? Dad, what’s up?"
Hearing the clamor in the background, Jin Yuanji knew his son was out carousing again. Normally, he would have chided him for it, but he had no time for that now. He said urgently:
"Haorui, stop all business activities immediately! Don’t sign any more contracts. There’s a problem with our eel fry."
"Ah, shibal! Dad, you’re not kidding, are you?"
"Why would I lie to you? Get back here now! Or would you rather wait to be served a court summons in San Francisco?" Jin Yuanji snapped.
"Damn it! I’m on my way back." On the other end of the line, Jin Haorui realized the gravity of the situation.
After hanging up, Jin Yuanji felt like he couldn’t breathe. His secretary quickly patted his back.
「Seven o’clock that evening.」
After an eleven-hour journey on a direct flight aboard an Airbus A380 from San Francisco to Busan, Jin Haorui finally arrived at the Haeundae eel breeding facility at Busan Port.
The moment he entered the facility’s office, he saw his father, Jin Yuanji, looking utterly dejected. The other company executives were there as well, their faces etched with worry and anxiety.
Jin Haorui rushed to ask for details. "Dad, what exactly happened?"
"Vice President, allow me to explain," Park Dachang interjected, and proceeded to give Jin Haorui a rundown of the situation.
After hearing Park Dachang’s explanation, Jin Haorui was just as shocked. He immediately started cursing, "That damn Jiang Anye! That bastard swore up and down that the technology was flawless. I never should have believed his bullshit!"
Park Dachang shook his head. "It might not be that simple."
"What do you mean?" Jin Haorui frowned.
Park Dachang shared his theory with a grave expression. "Jiang Anye’s death might be connected to Hailufeng Company. Right after he returned from discussing the partnership with us, his farm caught fire. All the newly produced eel fry were destroyed. Then, not long after that, he himself died suddenly from electrocution. It’s all too much of a coincidence."
"Hailufeng Company has that kind of power?" Jin Haorui asked, his voice a mix of shock and doubt.
Another executive added, "It wasn’t necessarily Hailufeng Company. Don’t forget, there’s also the Rokkaido Eel Company and Brown Company."
Jin Haorui pushed the thought aside and asked anxiously, "So what do we do now? We’ve signed too many contracts. We have to supply 30,000 kilograms of glass eels this month. If we default, we have to pay a 30% penalty."
Thirty thousand kilograms of glass eels at 3,200 US Dollars per kilogram... A 30% penalty means we’d have to pay 28.8 million US Dollars in damages.
And that’s just for the first month’s contracts.
For the last three months, Jin Haorui had been drumming up clients in Europe and America. He had orders signed all the way through June of this year. The total contract value was 410 million US Dollars. If they defaulted on all of them, they would have to pay 123 million US Dollars in penalties.
