Chapter 281: Chapter 148: Advance Party
A few swallows, carrying fresh mud in their beaks, returned to build nests under the eaves of the villa.
Jiang Miao glanced over. The weather was still a bit chilly, but in the sunlight, it didn’t feel too cold.
Spring had arrived.
It wasn’t just the bamboo putting out new shoots or the wild grass sprouting; insects were also hatching in droves.
He arrived by car at the experimental soybean fields of Salt Town Village.
The soybeans, having grown for nearly a hundred days, now had branches laden with yellowing pods. Jiang Miao plucked one and broke it open. Inside were three plump, full soybeans. According to the identification panel, all of them met the standard for planting.
Five small soybean harvesters, purchased from an agricultural machinery company in the North, were quickly working their way through the fields.
In no time at all, a whole mu of land was harvested.
The threshed soybeans were poured into burlap sacks.
Two employees filled seven sacks.
"Weigh it."
"312 kilograms."
One of the employees wrote out a receipt and handed it to a nearby villager. "Here you go. 312 kilograms, at five yuan per kilogram, makes for a total of 1,560 yuan. You can go directly to our company’s finance department to collect your payment."
"Great!"
"Next."
With two soybean harvesters working in tandem, they finally finished harvesting the 200 mu of Immortal Bean No. 1 soybeans in Salt Town Village by sunset.
Jiang Miao looked over the data reported by the agricultural technicians.
mu of Immortal Bean No. 1 yielded a total of 61,400 kilograms of soybeans, for an average yield of 307 kilograms per mu.
mu of Immortal Bean No. 2 yielded a total of 57,200 kilograms of soybeans, for an average yield of 286 kilograms per mu.
mu of Immortal Bean No. 3 yielded a total of 64,400 kilograms of soybeans, for an average yield of 322 kilograms per mu.
Immortal Bean No. 3 performed the best, but that didn’t mean No. 1 and No. 2 were inferior.
Each of the three varieties had its own unique characteristics. For instance, No. 1 had a balanced oil and protein content and could tolerate highly saline-alkaline soil. No. 2 was a high-oil variety, and No. 3 was a high-protein variety.
However, these soybeans weren’t put into storage after the harvest. Except for a small portion set aside as a contingency, 50,000 kilograms of each variety were promptly sent to the contract farmers to begin the second planting.
Each variety was sown over 10,000 mu.
By early June, they could harvest approximately 3 million kilograms of seeds from each soybean variety.
If this second batch of seeds were all planted, each variety could cover approximately 500,000 to 600,000 mu. The three varieties together would cover 1.5 to 1.8 million mu.
Of course, that was impossible.
It wasn’t that there weren’t enough seeds.
The problem was that leveling the land took time. Even on relatively flat sandy terrain, a single large bulldozer could only level 20 to 30 mu per day, and that was with the help of other equipment like graders, loaders, and rollers.
Assuming they started work in early April, they had a total of three months until the final soybean planting deadline at the end of June.
Outfitted with 100 large bulldozers and other assorted equipment, they could level roughly 2,000 to 3,000 mu of sandy land per day. Over 90 days, that would amount to between 180,000 and 270,000 mu.
Therefore, they would have a massive surplus of soybean seeds this year; a shortage was not a concern.
The real concern, however, was the delivery time for the necessary construction machinery. That was why Wang Feng, the manager of the procurement department, had hurriedly taken a dozen buyers with him on the eighth day of the Lunar New Year. They were heading to major construction equipment manufacturers like Liugong, Xugong, and Shantui to investigate purchasing options.
Meanwhile, Lü Weibin, the manager of the Agricultural Planting Division, also rushed to Monan on the eighth day of the New Year, taking with him 50 employees hired the previous December to prepare for the establishment of the Monan Branch.
At this point, Wang Feng, head of the procurement department, had already arrived at Xugong’s headquarters.
But he only stayed for half a day before leaving in a hurry.
These large, state-owned enterprises tended to be arrogant when it came to partnerships. Their price concessions were minimal, and he’d also heard that Xugong’s after-sales service wasn’t great.
So, he flew directly to the Capital City to approach Sany Heavy Industry instead.
「Capital City.」
5th Floor, Building 6, 8 Beiqing Road, Changping District.
Chairman Xiang Wenbo and CEO Yu Hongfu were in the office discussing business when their secretary knocked and rushed in.
"Chairman, CEO, there’s a head of procurement from another company downstairs asking to discuss a partnership. The receptionist feels it’s beyond her authority and was hoping for your instructions."
"Procurement? Can’t the sales department just handle them?" Xiang Wenbo asked, raising an eyebrow.
The secretary quickly added, "They’re looking to purchase 100 large bulldozers and a whole host of other construction equipment."
Upon hearing that, Xiang Wenbo immediately said, "That many? Have them... no, *invite* them to the reception room. General Manager Yu and I will meet with them personally."
After all, the number of domestic construction projects had dropped significantly in recent years. For the large, government-led projects that remained, they faced fierce competition from Xugong, Shantui, and Zoomlion Heavy Industry. Times were tough for Sany Heavy Industry.
A one-time purchase of over a hundred machines? That was a major client, no doubt about it.
Soon, Wang Feng and his party were shown into the reception room.
"Hello, Manager Wang. I’m Xiang Wenbo."
"Hello, General Manager Xiang."
"Hello, Manager Wang. I’m Yu Hongfu."
"Hello, General Manager Yu."
After exchanging pleasantries, both parties took their seats.
Although Wang Feng was young, he wasn’t here to beg Sany Heavy Industry for a favor; he was a buyer with money to spend. Showing no signs of intimidation, he cut straight to the chase. "General Manager Xiang, General Manager Yu, I’m here today on behalf of the Hailufeng Company to evaluate your construction equipment. If the price and other conditions are right, we will be purchasing at least 300 units."
"Manager Wang, what kind of construction equipment are you looking for?" Yu Hongfu asked with an eager smile. He knew he’d hooked a big one.
