Late at night in Tanchapel, in the commoner district, inside a modest two-story house.

Thick medicinal steam filled a cluttered bedroom.

A young girl lay on the bed, moaning weakly. Her skin had a sickly yellow tint, and she appeared completely drained of strength.

Yet her eyes still shone with unusual clarity.

"Father..." she whispered hoarsely, "I think I might die soon."

A tall, sturdy man sat beside the bed, struggling to hold back his tears. He gripped his daughter’s hand tightly. "Lira, don’t say that. I’ve found a way to save you!"

"You’ll be alright. Everything will get better."

A third person sat nearby—a girl roughly the same age as Lira. Her simple clothes showed she came from a similar background. She watched her sick friend with clear concern.

"Thank you, Mira," Krael said quietly. "Thank you for looking after her while I was away."

"It’s what I should do, Mister Krael," Mira replied, her face full of sorrow. "Lira is my best friend."

"Caring for her is only natural. But her condition..."

She turned away, seemingly unable to bear the sight any longer.

This was Krael’s home. As a low-ranking adventurer who had struggled for years in Tanchapel, owning even this modest house in the commoner district was already an achievement.

Earlier that evening, Baron Xander of Redoak Vale had given him an ancient book and informed him that the Masked Twin Blades would visit his home.

Krael had been overjoyed.

There was finally hope for his daughter. No matter how slim, he was willing to grasp it.

The steam came from an old folk remedy—raising the room’s temperature and humidity was said to help against various illnesses.

Krael had consulted many physicians, but none could treat Lira’s condition. They could only offer palliative measures.

---

Mira stood up after a while. "Since you’re back, I’ll head home early."

Krael nodded.

He rose to see his daughter’s friend out, but suddenly a dark silhouette burst into the room from outside!

"You can’t leave!"

Clang!

A curved blade flashed, pressing firmly against Mira’s neck.

"What are you doing?!" Krael shouted, shocked and furious.

Mira tried to scream—but Xander had already clamped a gloved hand over her mouth.

He wore the [Ghastly Gloves]. Even if she bit him, he would feel nothing.

"What am I doing?" Xander sneered. "Perhaps you should ask what she has been doing."

He tore open the front of Mira’s shirt.

An odd, half-formed imprint was visible on her neck—like the beginning of a sinister tattoo.

"I don’t understand," Krael said in a deep, dangerous voice. "Mira is Lira’s best friend. Mister Masked Twin Blades, release her immediately."

"Open the book. Page 670. Look at the illustration," Xander ordered coldly.

Mira’s body began trembling violently.

Terror filled her eyes.

She struggled desperately, but Xander’s strength—though average for an adventurer—was more than enough to restrain a young girl. Under the threat of the blade, she eventually stopped moving.

---

Krael quickly flipped through the ancient tome and found the indicated page. His face turned deathly pale.

"You’re a follower of the Blight Sovereign?!"

"How is this possible... Mira?"

Krael was utterly stunned.

The book came from Baron Xander’s family collection—an old volume containing records of various evil cults, including detailed notes on the Blight Sovereign’s worshippers.

Krael wasn’t blind. The partial tattoo on Mira’s neck matched the illustration perfectly.

These loathsome people worshipped disease and plague. They spread sickness across the land while claiming immunity through their dark god’s blessing.

They were among the most despised existences in the world.

Lira, still lying on the bed, didn’t fully understand what was happening. She cried out anxiously, "What are you doing? Father, don’t let this stranger hurt Mira!"

Xander showed no mercy. He struck the back of Mira’s head, knocking her unconscious.

"Madman!" Lira shouted, her face flushing with anger.

"Be quiet!" Krael roared, his voice heavy with grief.

Lira froze. In all her years, her father had never spoken to her so harshly.

"It was Mira," Krael said, his expression pained. "Your illness came from Mira."

"What? That’s impossible!" Lira shook her head violently. Suddenly, a look of excruciating pain crossed her face.

She clutched her stomach as tears streamed down her cheeks. Her other hand gripped the bedsheet so tightly it tore.

The pain was clearly unbearable.

Krael rushed to embrace his daughter, his eyes pleading with Xander.

Xander took a deep breath. "If you want to save her life, listen to my instructions."

Krael forced himself to nod.

At this point, he had no choice but to trust the Masked Twin Blades.

---

The steam apparatus was removed, replaced by a large brazier.

A strange herb burned within it—[Amethyst Sprout], a bitter plant of little nutritional value. Only the poorest used it for animal fodder.

The burning produced a harsh purple smoke. Xander ordered the doors and windows sealed.

They bound Lira’s arms and legs to the bedposts.

"Now, go outside," Xander said calmly. "You may not want to see what happens next. If you stay, you must promise not to interfere—no matter what I do to your daughter."

"Father! Don’t leave me! I don’t want to stay with this lunatic!" Lira screamed hoarsely.

Krael’s face twisted in agony.

The Masked Twin Blades had no reason to harm him. He bit his lip, approached the bed, and kissed his daughter’s forehead.

"Trust me, my dear. Even if his methods seem harsh, he came here to save you."

"I love you."

With one final glance at Xander, Krael stepped out of the room.

---

Only Xander and the sobbing Lira remained inside.

"You’re a foolish girl."

"But surely not so foolish that you never suspected your best friend?"

Xander drew the Kingfisher Jade Stiletto from his Void Conch as he spoke calmly.

The purple smoke had thickened, causing Lira to cough violently.

She remained silent for a moment before shaking her head. "Impossible. Mira has no reason to do this."

"People will do anything to survive," Xander replied quietly.

He moved closer to the bed. "Your father loves you very much."

Lira looked at him through tears. "What are you going to do to cure me?"

Rip!

Before she could finish, Xander sliced open her clothing with the stiletto.

"Aaah!" A piercing scream echoed through the room.

Outside, Krael fought the urge to burst back inside, his fists clenched white.

All kinds of screams continued for the next hour. By the end, Lira’s voice had grown hoarse.

Blue veins bulged on Krael’s forehead. He nearly broke down the door several times.

If the Masked Twin Blades was truly harming his daughter...

He couldn’t bear to imagine it.

Finally, the door creaked open.

Xander emerged, carrying the unconscious Mira over his shoulder.

"I’m taking this one with me."

"Your daughter is fine now."

"At worst, she suffered a severe fright. Comfort her. A change of environment would help. Tanchapel isn’t peaceful these days. Staying around certain people only invites danger. Don’t you agree, Mister Krael?"

Krael was already staring at his sleeping daughter. Though still pale, she breathed peacefully—something she hadn’t done in weeks.

"What do you mean, Mister Masked Twin Blades?" Krael asked, snapping out of his daze.

Xander headed down the stairs without slowing. "Redoak Vale is a good place."

"The air is clean, and the people are decent."

Krael bowed deeply.

"I understand."

---

As the night deepened, in an abandoned warehouse on the outskirts of Tanchapel.

Splash!

A basin of cold water struck Mira’s face.

"Tell me where you usually preach... or gather," Xander said in a frigid voice.
