Chini regained consciousness. Upon seeing the masked figure looming over her, pure despair filled her eyes.

"No... I can’t tell you..."

"They’ll kill me."

"It wasn’t my choice. They forced me... or they would shove those insects down my throat..." Chini wept bitterly.

Xander remained completely unmoved.

She may have had her own hardships, but poisoning her best friend with the [Shadowblight Essence] was an undeniable fact.

Xander had never been one for unnecessary mercy. The only reason she still drew breath was because he needed the lead.

Originally, he had only planned to cure Lira’s affliction quickly and recruit Krael to Redoak Vale.

But an unexpected system notification changed his plans.

[Quest Activated: Blight Purge]

Description: You have discovered traces of Shadowblight Essence in Tanchapel and successfully saved a young girl from its grasp. Perhaps you should help more victims... or eliminate the source before the coming storm.

Rewards: 3000 General Experience, at least 1 point of Regional Prestige.

Optional Paths: Heal victims / Eradicate the Blight Envoy.

Xander’s experience requirements were extremely high. While he had many ways to level quickly, most carried significant risk.

Completing this quest seemed highly worthwhile.

The first path required treating a set number of infected individuals. The second—eliminating the Blight Envoy spreading the essence in Tanchapel—was far faster.

From Lira’s condition, the Envoy should be relatively weak, likely no higher than 2nd Rank. Plague cultists were generally frail in direct combat. Even without his involvement, Tanchapel could eventually handle them.

If he could locate the Envoy, Xander wouldn’t mind dealing with the threat personally.

Killing evil cultists carried no psychological burden for him.

Time was short, so the first path was not an option.

---

That night, Xander had done nothing cruel to Lira.

After cutting open her clothes, he used the Kingfisher Jade Stiletto to make a small incision in her abdomen—roughly three centimeters wide.

The terrified girl had screamed loudly out of fear.

The later screams came when she witnessed something horrifying.

Soon after the incision, black, maggot-like worms began crawling out of her body.

Lira nearly fainted from terror.

There had been so many of the disgusting creatures inside her!

Xander swiftly caught each one, tossing them into prepared jars.

The smoke from the Amethyst Sprout lured more and more of the [Black Worms] out. In the end, he filled three jars completely.

After extracting the final worm, he stitched the wound and gave Lira a sip of strong wine to help her sleep. The exhausted and traumatized girl quickly lost consciousness.

The Shadowblight Essence was actually a parasitic affliction.

These Black Worms were specially created lifeforms favored by the Blight Sovereign. They entered through contaminated food, grew inside the host, and drained their vitality.

When enough worms gathered near the neck, they would trigger a catastrophic explosion, spreading more eggs through the victim’s blood.

In this era of limited medical knowledge, such a plague was truly terrifying.

But Xander knew the cure.

The Amethyst Sprout smoke was irresistible to the parasites. They emerged on their own and were easily captured. The jars contained strong vinegar—the creatures’ greatest weakness. After an hour submerged, they died completely.

The resulting liquid became a potent paralytic poison.

For Xander, this was killing two birds with one stone. He had long wanted suitable poisons for his blades but lacked the materials.

The three jars were a perfect harvest.

He had intended to leave immediately, but the new quest forced him to adjust his plans.

---

"I don’t know what they did to you," Xander said coldly, pressing the curved blade lightly against Chini’s neck.

"But you have two choices. Speak, and I’ll spare your life—provided you never approach Krael’s family again. Refuse, and I kill you now."

The masked figure looked particularly menacing in the dim light. His emotionless voice perfectly matched the image of a ruthless killer.

Chini’s eyes widened in terror. She broke down almost instantly.

"I’ll talk! I’ll talk!"

"Please don’t kill me... I’ll tell you everything."

"It’s a small church in the commoner district. It used to belong to the Silver Order, but they rented it out to..."

Xander’s lips curved into a faint smile.

Silver Order priests really are too greedy. Renting out their own church without checking the tenants properly.

Would the Silver God be pleased knowing his temple now spreads the Blight Sovereign’s teachings?

After obtaining the information, Xander didn’t release Chini immediately. He knocked her unconscious again.

He needed to verify the situation first.

---

The commoner district housed families with modest wealth—adventurers, merchants, craftsmen, and the like. Security was decent but not exceptional.

In the northwest corner stood a small church. It had once been used by a priest of the Silver Order, but the priest eventually abandoned the area, citing impure faith and insufficient donations. He rented it out and left.

Late that night, a ceremony was underway in the church basement.

More than ten youths knelt on the cold floor, chanting the Blight Sovereign’s twisted teachings with fanatical fervor.

A man in black robes stood on a raised platform, gazing down at them coldly.

Their expressions burned with zeal.

But faith needed to be tested.

He would only select the purest to serve as his subordinates and gain greater favor with the Blight Sovereign.

After all, among the Sovereign’s envoys, he was merely average.

Still, he possessed basic cleric abilities.

[Distinguish Faith]!

A dark halo spread from his hand, wrapping around the kneeling youths.

Some flickered uneasily. Others remained unaffected, as if they couldn’t see the light at all.

Threads of energy appeared before the black-robed man, extending from each youth’s body.

The thickness of the threads revealed the strength of their belief.

The man in black was pleased. Two among them showed genuine, firm faith. They would provide excellent power to the Sovereign and had promising futures.

But his satisfaction vanished when he noticed one youth with no thread at all.

"There is actually a fake among you!"

"Do you think you can deceive the Sovereign’s eyes?"

He smiled cruelly and pointed at the terrified youth. "Let the others see what happens to non-believers!"

The other youths immediately rushed forward, pinning the imposter down to prove their loyalty.

The black-robed man laughed coldly and stepped forward.

At that moment, a blurry shadow hidden in the darkness quietly drew closer.
