The sound of wooden wheels creaking harshly clashed against the rocky ground. A black haired young man named Yang Fei sat on the driver seat of the foremost wooden carriage. He held the reins with one hand wrapped in a thick bandage. His eyes were red and weary. His breathing was heavy. His body was clad in purple armor dirtied by travel dust.
Beneath the expanse of the orange sky slowly fading into darkness, the carriage convoy moved through the giant bamboo forest. Stars began to appear one by one on the eastern horizon. The pulling monsters in the form of wingless earth dragons stepped in a constant rhythm, carrying the large carriages filled entirely with children and teenagers of the Husa Clan. On the right and left sides of the carriages, several young guards walked escorting with their remaining strength. Occasionally the shadow of a black crow passed through the air above them, flying following the direction of the group.
A white haired woman with a pair of black horns on her head sat right next to Yang Fei. The woman named Fany stared sharply at the young man next to her.
"You should be in the back and rest," Fany said firmly.
She raised her hand then pressed her palm against Yang Fei's forehead. The young man's body temperature felt unnatural. "Listen to your body."
Yang Fei turned his head for a moment with blurred vision. "No."
"Falling asleep when I hold the future of our clan?" Yang Fei shook his head slowly. "I do not want to be written like that by my descendants later."
Fany frowned. "No one will write such a ridiculous history."
"There is," Yang Fei answered quietly.
"Who?"
"The people who are behind us right now." Yang Fei glanced toward the wooden carriages behind him. "The ones looking at me."
"I will tell them not to write it," Fany replied quickly.
Fany pulled Yang Fei's shoulder gently, forcing the young man's body to lean on her shoulder.
"Forty minutes left before we enter the Khao Clan territory." Fany held Yang Fei's body so he would not sit upright again. "Sleep for just twenty minutes."
"Rest," Fany said quietly. "If you die of exhaustion halfway the sacrifice of the elders in the village will be in vain."
Yang Fei tried to pull his body back upright but Fany held his shoulder even stronger.
"Fifteen minutes," Fany offered.
Yang Fei finally took a deep breath. He relaxed his neck muscles then rested his head on Fany's shoulder. Silence enveloped the wooden carriage for a few seconds. Only the harsh breathing sound of the pulling dragon in front of them could be heard.
"Do you think the Khao Clan will accept us Fany," Yang Fei muttered.
"I do not know, but the possibility of them accepting us is much greater than other territories," Fany answered rationally.
"You look very relaxed," Yang Fei said softly. "Have you not realized how bad our situation is right now."
Fany did not change her sitting position. Her eyes kept staring sharply at the rocky road ahead. "I will save my panic for later. Panicking now is useless Yang Fei."
Yang Fei fell silent absorbing Fany's words. He then muttered with a hoarse voice, "That is true."
Sleepiness began to overcome his defenses. Yang Fei slowly closed his eyes.
"Fifteen minutes..."
Wak!
Wak!
Wak!
Suddenly a very loud wing flapping sound shattered the silence of the forest. Dozens of black crows flew low right in front of the pulling monster's face. The earth dragon snorted in shock then stopped its steps abruptly.
Yang Fei jolted awake. His sleepiness vanished instantly. He immediately jumped down from the driver seat landing on the rocky ground. He drew a sword from its sheath using his unbandaged hand.
"Prepare yourselves!" Yang Fei shouted with a hoarse yet loud voice.
The young guards walking on the side of the carriages instantly drew their weapons. The formation was tightened. The children inside the carriages instantly cowered in fear hugging each other tightly. The carriage pulling monsters snorted restlessly stomping their large feet onto the ground.
On top of the carriage Fany stood up. She hardened her fists and gathered magical energy.
The black crows did not attack. They circled in the air then dove down in a spiral surrounding a single point in the middle of the path. The rotation of the crows resembled a small black tornado. Slowly the bird tornado subsided. The crows landed on the ground and tree branches, staring silently toward the Husa Clan group.
Yang Fei and the guard troops exchanged confused glances. They gripped their weapons tighter then stepped forward slowly with the intention to kill whatever emerged from behind the crowd of crows.
Right when one of the young guards raised his spear preparing to stab.
"Do not."
"These birds remember your faces very well."
A very calm masculine voice was heard from the edge of the forest on the right side of the road.
Yang Fei and all the guards turned their heads simultaneously.
Standing there leaning against a bamboo tree trunk was a young man. His appearance was very striking and foreign. The man had messy brown hair. He wore a black leather jacket over a black shirt and a clean white tie. A round framed glasses with dark red lenses perched on his nose. On his hand, a metallic watch and a gold ring circled. His leather boots looked clean contrasting with the muddy forest ground. In his right hand he held a medium sized golden axe.
The man raised his left hand returning their stares casually. "Yo."
Yang Fei did not answer the greeting. He turned to his troops giving an eye signal to prepare to launch a simultaneous attack.
Seeing the tense reaction the red glasses wearing man frowned. He pushed his body off the bamboo tree then walked slowly toward the wooden carriages.
"You guys are so tense," he said quietly with a strange accent. "I am not a robber or a criminal like what is in your brains."
"Then who are you! Which clan are you from! Human?" Fany asked from above the carriage. Her eyes scanned the foreign figure from head to toe. "What kind of clothes are you wearing!"
"Human?" The man smiled faintly. "Ah."
He shook his head slowly. He raised his left index finger pointing to a pair of small black horns protruding from behind his brown hair.
"And hey," he reminded. "Do not insult my clothes."
"Demon?" Yang Fei snapped in shock, his eyes widening. "Why is a demon in this territory!"
Slowly Fany reached into a small pouch on her waist. She took out a round mirror shaped artifact and aimed it right at the man's face secretly.
"Rituk," the man answered casually mentioning the name of the enemy kingdom. "Do you often skip school or were you just never taught how to differentiate horn shapes?" he asked sarcastically.
"What is your goal!" Yang Fei snapped pointing his sword. "Are you sent by the empire? Are you with the monsters in our village? Do you want to ki..."
"Huh? Why would I, too lazy," the man cut in quickly. He raised his left hand to pick his ear casually.
"Then what do you want!"
The man pointed toward the line of wooden carriages behind Yang Fei using his golden axe. "I want a ride."
"I am sleepy."
"I am too lazy to fly."
The man kept walking casually. He walked past the line of young guards who were pointing their spears at him. Strangely, the guards he passed stood stiffly like statues. The air around the man felt so heavy that it made their muscles freeze, unable to be moved.
The man opened the wooden door in one of the rear carriages.
"You..." snapped one of the young guards inside the carriage.
"Move aside a little," the man cut in flatly.
The guard and the children inside the carriage stepped back instantly without realizing it giving an empty space for him. The man sat leaning casually on a pile of supply sacks. He peeked out the wooden window looking at Yang Fei who was still frozen in the front then gave a thumbs up.
"Continue."
Yang Fei and Fany looked at each other in wonder.
Yang Fei bit his lower lip hard. "There is no time to be confused!" He turned around intending to dash to the rear carriage to chase the foreign man away.
However Fany quickly grabbed Yang Fei's shoulder holding him back from stepping.
Fany's grip felt very strong but trembled violently. Cold sweat poured heavily from the white haired woman's temples. Her eyes bulged staring at the mirror artifact in her hand.
Yang Fei turned to look at Fany with a confused and worried gaze.
Fany swallowed hard. She shook her head slowly, her eyes implying absolute panic. "If you go there, we all die."
"Huh? How do you know..."
Fany covered Yang Fei's mouth with her hand. "Order them to move. Continue the journey right now."
Fany released her cover then turned the surface of the mirror artifact so it could be seen by Yang Fei.
On the surface of the magic mirror, the danger and energy level measurement number shined brightly.
