I'm Not Your Husband, You Evil Dragon!
Chapter 264: I Will Let This Child Be BornIsvarn stared directly into Yuuta’s eyes. The gentleness that had been present while he watched the children was still there, but something heavier had entered his expression, as though the memory he was about to reveal wasn’t one he carried proudly.
"That her own great-grandfather..."
He paused briefly.
"...once wanted her dead."
Yuuta froze.
For a moment, the laughter of the children around them seemed to fade into the distance. He stared at Isvarn without speaking, genuinely wondering whether he had misunderstood what the old man had just said.
"...What?"
The words made no sense to him.
Yuuta had seen Isvarn and Elena together. He had seen the patience the ruthless old dragon somehow possessed whenever Elena was around, the way his expression softened when she spoke to him, and the quiet affection hidden beneath all his usual complaints. Their bond was one of the few things about Isvarn that Yuuta had never questioned because it always seemed completely genuine.
Yet now the same man was calmly telling him that he had once wanted Elena dead.
Yuuta’s expression gradually changed as the meaning finally settled inside him.
"Wait..."
His crimson eyes narrowed.
"Are you saying you wanted Elena dead?"
Part of him still expected Isvarn to correct him. Perhaps wanted her dead meant something different, or perhaps Yuuta had misunderstood the context entirely.
Isvarn gave him neither comfort.
"Yes."
Yuuta’s eyes widened.
Isvarn looked away toward the children playing across the park.
"I did."
The answer immediately awakened something protective inside Yuuta. Whatever sadness had occupied his mind moments earlier was pushed aside as he stared at the old dragon sitting beside him.
"Why?"
His voice became sharper.
"Why would you try to kill her?"
Isvarn didn’t react to the change in Yuuta’s tone. If anything, he seemed to have expected it. He remained silent for several seconds before giving an answer Yuuta understood even less.
"For Survival."
Yuuta frowned.
"...Survival?"
"Yes."
Isvarn slowly closed his eyes as memories from years ago returned to him.
"At that time, I believed Elena’s birth would endanger everyone around her. More importantly, I believed it would endanger Erza herself."
Yuuta’s anger faltered slightly at the mention of Erza.
"What does Erza have to do with it?"
"Everything."
Isvarn opened his eyes again, but he no longer seemed to be looking at the peaceful park before them. His mind had gone somewhere much further away, toward a time Yuuta knew almost nothing about.
"You only know the Erza who eventually came to Earth, boy. You don’t know what her life looked like when Elena was born."
Yuuta remained silent, his attention now completely fixed on him.
Isvarn continued in a heavier voice.
"Erza wasn’t living peacefully inside Atlantis waiting for you to return. She had enemies watching her from every direction, and the possibility of another war was becoming greater with each passing day. There were those waiting for weakness, those who wanted her throne and others who simply wanted the White Dragon Queen dead."
Yuuta’s fingers slowly tightened.
"...Enemies?"
"Many."
Isvarn’s gaze hardened.
"Erza had reached a point where even someone of her strength couldn’t afford unnecessary vulnerabilities. One wrong decision could have been used against her, and one moment of weakness could have given her enemies exactly the opportunity they needed."
Yuuta’s expression became increasingly serious.
"And you thought Elena was that weakness?"
Isvarn didn’t immediately answer. His eyes moved toward a little girl playing with her father across the park, and the coldness in his expression slowly gave way to something more complicated.
"At the time... yes."
He closed his eyes as memories from years ago began returning.
"What Erza was facing during that period was something you don’t understand yet, boy. When I learned she intended to give birth, I believed it was one of the worst possible times for her to have a child. Enemies could attack at any moment, and everyone knew another war could begin sooner or later."
Yuuta’s expression became serious.
"Who was she fighting?"
Isvarn opened his eyes.
"The whole world."
Yuuta stared at him, unsure whether the old dragon was exaggerating.
"...The whole world?"
"Yes. From Heaven to the depths of the Silent Lair, from the western lands to the east, enemies existed everywhere. Humans, dragons, angels, fallen angels... it didn’t matter what race or land they came from. There were countless forces that wanted Erza dead."
Yuuta’s fingers tightened slightly against his knees. He had always known Erza possessed enemies, especially considering who she was, but hearing Isvarn describe the scale of it made him realize how little he actually knew about the years they had spent apart.
Isvarn continued while watching the children in the distance.
"Erza knew all of this before she became pregnant. She knew carrying a child would eventually weaken her body, even if only temporarily. She also knew that once the child was born, anyone who couldn’t reach the Dragon Queen directly would have something far easier to target."
"Elena..." Yuuta murmured.
"Exactly."
Isvarn’s expression hardened slightly.
"That was why I opposed the pregnancy from the beginning. It wasn’t because I knew Elena and hated her. Elena didn’t even exist to me as a person back then. I was thinking as an advisor, and from an advisor’s perspective, the situation was simple. Erza was surrounded by enemies, war was approaching, and she had voluntarily created a weakness that everyone could exploit."
Yuuta didn’t like hearing Elena described as a weakness, but he remained silent. The Isvarn sitting beside him now clearly didn’t see her that way anymore, and Yuuta wanted to understand what had changed.
Isvarn turned slightly toward him, but his eyes gradually became distant. As he looked at Yuuta, an old memory surfaced within his mind, carrying him back to Atlantis many years ago.
Back then, the royal hall of Atlantis had been almost completely empty. Isvarn stood before the throne while Erza sat above him, her long white-silver hair falling around her shoulders and partially hiding her expression. One of her hands rested over her stomach, her fingers moving across it almost unconsciously as though protecting the small life growing within.
Isvarn lowered himself onto one knee.
"My Queen, please reconsider your decision."
Erza’s hand stopped moving.
Her violet eyes slowly shifted toward him, carrying the cold authority of the ruler sitting upon the throne.
Isvarn kept his head lowered as he continued.
"We are facing enemies more powerful and numerous than we have encountered in generations. Under these circumstances, allowing that thing to continue growing inside you...."
Erza’s eyes immediately narrowed.
Isvarn stopped.
The temperature inside the royal hall seemed to fall without a single spell being cast.
"...That thing?"
Isvarn’s expression stiffened before he quickly corrected himself.
"I misspoke, my Queen. I meant the life growing within your womb."
Erza continued staring at him coldly.
Isvarn carefully continued, knowing he had already stepped dangerously close to offending her.
"The child is weakening you. Perhaps the effect is still small now, but it will increase as the pregnancy progresses. This isn’t an ordinary time, Your Majesty. We are preparing to face enemies from nearly every direction, and we cannot afford for the ruler of Atlantis to become vulnerable."
Erza remained seated without answering, one hand still resting protectively over her stomach.
Isvarn raised his gaze slightly.
"Please reconsider the advice I gave you. We don’t even completely understand how this child came into existence, nor do we know who the father is."
That finally earned a response.
"I have already explained this to you."
Erza’s voice was cold.
"I created this child through my spell."
"Yes, Your Majesty. You have said that."
Isvarn hesitated.
"But I don’t believe that explanation is complete."
Erza’s fingers stopped against her stomach once again.
Isvarn could feel the danger in the silence, yet he continued.
"There is another scent within the child."
Erza’s violet eyes narrowed.
"Another scent?"
"Yes. One that doesn’t belong to you."
Isvarn had noticed it long before anyone else. Whatever was developing inside Erza carried her blood and her overwhelming draconic presence, but beneath it was something else. Something faint enough that most dragons would have overlooked it, yet distinct enough that an ancient dragon like Isvarn couldn’t dismiss it.
"Which means, Your Majesty, that you may be mistaken about how this life was created."
Erza stared at him.
"Are you suggesting someone assaulted me?"
The question carried enough coldness to make the entire royal hall feel smaller.
"I am the ruler of Atlantis, Isvarn. Have you forgotten how a female dragon’s body works?"
Isvarn remained silent as Erza continued.
"Without my acceptance, no one could even become intimate with me. My own body would reject them."
Her violet eyes narrowed.
"Do you truly believe someone could violate me and somehow leave alive while I remained unaware?"
"No, my Queen."
"Then stop searching for explanations that don’t exist."
Erza leaned back against her throne.
"I created this child because my lineage must continue. That is all you need to understand."
Isvarn’s jaw tightened.
He didn’t believe her.
Perhaps Erza herself believed what she was saying, but Isvarn had lived too long and witnessed too many births to mistake what his senses were telling him. There was another presence mixed within that unborn child’s existence.
Still, arguing over the father wasn’t the reason he had come.
Isvarn slowly rose from his kneeling position.
Erza’s expression immediately changed.
Her violet eyes sharpened as she watched him stand without receiving permission.
"What is the meaning of this, Advisor?"
Her voice carried unmistakable royal authority, but Isvarn didn’t kneel again. He stood directly before the throne, knowing that what he was about to say could anger the Queen far more than anything he had said until now.
"My Queen, you may convince the officials. You may convince the soldiers, the nobles and perhaps even yourself that this pregnancy presents no danger."
His voice echoed throughout the empty royal hall.
"But you cannot fool me."
Erza’s expression darkened.
"I have witnessed enough life enter this world to understand what pregnancy does even to powerful beings. I have advised your predecessors through wars, rebellions and disasters, and I have watched kingdoms collapse because their rulers allowed personal desires to interfere with decisions that affected millions."
Isvarn took a slow breath before looking directly at his Queen.
"I am asking you one final time. Reconsider."
Erza’s hand remained over her stomach.
"We are not preparing for an ordinary war. You have enemies across this world and beyond it, and every one of them is waiting for the smallest opportunity to strike. Giving birth to this child will weaken you, and if they discover its existence, the child itself will become another way to reach you."
Erza said nothing.
Isvarn’s next words became considerably heavier.
"I am not speaking to you as Isvarn."
That finally caused a subtle change in Erza’s eyes.
"I am speaking as the Advisor of Atlantis."
The title carried a different meaning.
Across generations, the royal advisor wasn’t merely someone who stood beside the throne and offered opinions whenever asked. The position existed to protect Atlantis even when its ruler became blinded by anger, pride, fear or personal attachment. Isvarn had advised three queens before Erza, and every one of them had understood the weight carried by the words he was now invoking.
When the Advisor of Atlantis formally spoke for the survival of the kingdom, his warning wasn’t something a ruler simply dismissed.
Isvarn’s voice echoed through the silent hall.
"My advice is that this pregnancy must not continue."
Erza remained completely still upon her throne.
Her fingers slowly curled over her stomach.
For generations, queens had listened when the Advisor spoke with the kingdom’s survival behind his words.
Isvarn expected Erza to do the same.
He had seen that look before. He had seen it in every queen he had ever advised—the flicker of hesitation, the silent calculation, the gradual acceptance that his wisdom was absolute. It was always the same. They would weigh his words, measure the consequences, and eventually bend to the weight of his authority. Because his word was like law. Because he was the advisor of queens. Because he had guided three generations and had never been wrong.
But the look inside Erza’s violet eyes told him that this queen might be the first who wouldn’t.
Not quite fear. Isvarn had advised queens for centuries, and none had ever made him question whether his counsel would ultimately be obeyed. Not quite frustration—he had learned patience over centuries. Something in between. Something that felt almost like uncertainty.
She will listen, he told himself. She has to listen. My word is law, and I am doing this to keep this kingdom safe. That child... His gaze drifted toward her womb.
That child must not be allowed to endanger her. Not while the entire world waits for a chance to strike.
Erza looked at him for a long moment. Her violet eyes were unreadable, cold as the frozen wastes of Atlantis. The silence stretched between them, heavy and expectant.
Then she touched her belly.
The gesture was small, almost unconscious, but Isvarn noticed it immediately. His jaw tightened. He had seen that gesture before, in countless women who had made up their minds about something he had already decided for them.
Erza’s voice, when she spoke, was quiet. But it carried the weight of absolute certainty.
"I will let this child be born."
Isvarn opened his mouth to speak, to argue, to remind her of the danger she was inviting into their kingdom.
But Erza continued, her voice dropping into something colder, harder, more dangerous than any threat he had ever heard from her.
"And no matter who comes against me..." Her violet eyes met his without flinching. "...I will kill every single one of them."
The words hung in the air between them like a blade.
Isvarn stared at her.
For the first time in centuries, he found himself without words.
