Magna felt a sharp pain shoot through his arm, though the enhanced endurance from his previous power-up was enough to make it bearable.

For a moment he hung in the air, and got a brief second to look down.

The two lizards stood on opposite sides of the frost dome. Their heads were already turned toward him, locked onto their target.

Two plans crossed his mind at once.

The first was to fight them with the rusted, broken sword at his waist. With his new speed and the assassin instincts burned into his brain, he actually stood a chance.

The second was to draw them off and run. He would pull them well away from Faye and the mother goblin.

He reasoned the second option was the safer bet. After all, he still lacked any real combat experience, outside of memories that weren’t technically real. So he made up his mind.

Magna knew just how fast these creatures were, so he let his body drop. The moment his bare feet hit the rocky ground, he pushed off with a burst of force and broke into a full sprint.

The speed of his own body startled him. For a second, he really feared he would lose his footing and go tumbling forward.

But he steadied himself quickly. He found his balance and pushed even faster.

He glanced back over his shoulder to check if they were following. Instead, he found himself staring straight into an open jaw, with rows of razor-sharp teeth just inches from his face.

"Fu..."

Instinct took over. He threw everything he had into his legs, launched himself forward, and rolled across the ground without a thought for balance.

He narrowly escaped the lizard’s snapping jaws. But throwing himself to the dirt left him wide open for whatever came next.

The second lizard was already on top of him, lunging down, teeth aimed at his flesh.

His assassin reflexes fired once again. He pushed off the ground and hurled his whole body backward. The lizard’s jaws snapped shut just inches above his face.

Adrenaline flooded through him. He rolled across the dirt, sprang back to his feet, and dashed forward again.

With every stride, he adjusted a little more to this new body and this new speed. At last he found his rhythm, and slowly he began to pull ahead of the lizards.

Faye watched it all unfold through the transparent ice, her eyes wide with shock.

She had already guessed what Magna was planning. But watching it happen in front of her filled her with a dread that sat sick in her stomach.

’Is she going to be all right?’ she asked herself, unable to find an answer to it.

She knew he was drawing the beasts away to protect her, and that turned her panic straight into suffocating guilt.

’She only came here to help me find a goblin, and now she’s throwing himself into danger to save my life.’ Her eyes brimmed with tears. The weight of it all grew too heavy for her to carry.

Until a voice called out behind her.

"Faye."

The voice was cold as ice, and guttural, like something monstrous. But the second it reached her ears, her whole face lit up, and she spun around at once.

Standing before her was a giant of a man in full frost armor. He was bent low just to fit inside the dome, far too massive for the space.

"Father!" she cried, throwing herself straight into his arms.

Titus bent down further, gathering his child into his embrace. He rested his massive hand on her head, stroking her hair gently as she broke into violent, desperate sobs against his chest.

"It’s all right, Faye. Calm down," he murmured, his voice soft and gentle now.

In truth, he had been there the whole time, watching from the shadows.

He had seen every single moment, and he knew exactly why his daughter was so frightened. But for the sake of her training, he had forced his fatherly instincts down. He only stepped in once real, deadly danger showed itself.

After all, every hardship a Witch faced during her trials was a lesson she could not learn any other way. It was a lesson that would shape the rest of her life.

Faye wept a while longer, letting the fear and grief drain out of her against her father’s chest. At last her sobs eased into quiet breaths.

Then, pulling back a little, she looked up at him with red, tear-swollen blue eyes, desperation written across her face.

"Father... Sister Magna... She..." She couldn’t even finish before another sob cut her off.

Titus let out a heavy sigh, pulling her close again. "Don’t worry. He’ll be fine. Let’s get you out of here first."

As he spoke, the two of them began sinking seamlessly into the frozen ground.

Just as they were about to vanish beneath the dome, Faye suddenly cried out, "No, wait! We forgot the goblin!"

Titus already knew the whole story, so he understood well enough why she needed the body. Still, something like reluctance flickered behind the narrow slit of his helmet.

But he could not refuse his daughter’s wide, tear-streaked eyes. He reached out, took the mother goblin by the wrist, and pulled her down into the frozen earth right along with them.

A moment later, all three were gone, nothing left behind but scattered frost.

’How much longer are these things going to chase me?’ Magna thought grimly, pushing himself forward at full speed.

Even with his enhanced stamina, he had already started gasping for air. His legs and lungs were only moments from giving out entirely.

He even began wondering if he ought to just stop and fight.

But he recalled how narrowly he had escaped ending up between their teeth, enough to know that was not exactly a wise plan.

He might stand a chance against one. Both at once was another matter entirely.

As his speed began to fail, and his body threatened to give out, his eyes scanned the ground around him.

If he could find a choke point, a narrow passage where only one could fit through, or some higher ground he could climb, he might use the terrain to his advantage.

There was nothing of the sort anywhere near him.

The cold grip of death began settling over him as the lizards closed the gap.

At the very last second, his sharpened senses caught the lizard on his left closing in, about to strike.

Reaching down, he drew the broken sword at his waist, spun with a sudden burst of motion, and struck straight at its snapping jaws.

The blade’s tip met the lizard’s hard red scales with a sharp, metallic clang.

Disaster followed at once. The already damaged sword shattered completely, and its broken tip snapped clean off the hilt and flew through the air.

Still, the strike bought him a precious second. The lizard was momentarily dazed.

Seizing the opening, Magna drove a brutal kick straight into its lower jaw, snapping its mouth shut with a loud BANG that echoed through the air.

Searing pain shot up his leg, as though the bone itself had shattered. But the blow proved far more effective than the sword had ever been.

The force snapped the lizard’s head back, threw it completely off balance, and sent it crashing to the ground.

In that instant, Magna realized his legs weren’t just for running anymore. They’d become weapons in their own right.

He turned at once toward the second lizard, which was already coiling to pounce. He meant to land a matching kick before the fallen one could recover and rejoin the fight.

The moment he planted his foot to move, though, he realized the leg really was broken. It dangled useless beneath him, refusing to bear his weight, and he collapsed hard into the dirt.

’Ahh, fuck my life.’

Accepting his fate at last, he simply sat there, watching the lizard’s jaws close in.
