I'm the Only Magus in This Witch World

Chapter 29: He Is Actually Not a Sister?

Accepting death was hard for Magna. He hadn’t even managed to leave the cave to see what the outside world looked like.

He hated feeling like a rookie player who couldn’t even make it past the tutorial zone.

But in the end, he had to accept the harsh reality closing in on him. It came in the form of a massive, foul-smelling maw.

But just as the wicked fangs were about to touch his skin and crush his skull, they suddenly froze in place.

"What..." Magna gasped, feeling the lizard’s hot, rancid breath right on his face.

His brows furrowed as he struggled to make sense of why it had suddenly stopped.

It wasn’t just standing still. It looked as if time itself had frozen for the beast. It did not move, not even an inch.

Then a voice reached his ears.

"Giving up already?"

The voice was coming from in front of him, right from the lizard.

No, more specifically, it was coming from behind it.

Magna tilted his head slightly, trying to catch a glimpse of whatever was back there. That’s when he saw the figure standing behind the beast.

A tall, towering man stood there motionless, his entire body seeming encased in frost. He held the tip of the lizard’s tail with a single hand, as if it weighed nothing.

The second lizard was there as well, frozen completely.

"Who are you?" Magna choked out in a low voice, trying to comprehend if he was truly being saved by this man.

He looked at the frost armor covering the man’s face, and he remembered Faye’s endless, chatterbox rambling. A sense of familiarity struck him.

’Is he the one she was talking about? Titus... her father?’

The man, however, showed no intention of introducing himself. He simply let go of the lizard’s tail and began walking toward him.

Magna’s instincts screamed a warning at once. He had just run into something far more dangerous than the lizards.

’He’s not planning to kill me, is he?’

While the thought crossed his mind, Titus’s massive frame was already towering over him.

He stared down at Magna through the visor of his helm, his eyes glowing blue. Then he slowly bent down to grab his leg.

Magna had already seen what happened to the lizard when that hand touched it, so he instinctively tried to crawl backward in panic.

But the man was too fast. His grip locked around Magna’s ankle at once.

"Nngh..." he let out a muffled groan at the sudden wave of pain.

Titus held him by the ankle of his broken leg and slowly lifted him into the air, leaving Magna dangling upside down.

His leg dangled limply from where it was fractured, looking as if only skin and muscle were holding it together.

But the pain, and even the fear of death, were the least of his concerns once Titus began to speak.

"You held a blade to my daughter’s throat." His voice had nothing human in it.

"You lied to her, and used her innocence just to get close to her."

He did not raise his voice. But every word vibrated through Magna’s ears, as if it might shatter his eardrums.

"You hurt her hand."

With Titus’s final words, frost began to spread quickly up Magna’s leg.

"Wait..." The ice was already spreading fast up his limb, creeping straight toward his torso.

But the man did not seem to care. He watched with indifferent eyes as the boy’s entire body froze over.

"Shh... It’s okay. Stop crying."

Outside the cave, Celeste dropped to her knees, pulling Faye close and whispering gentle words to soothe her.

"But... but..." Faye buried her face in her mother’s chest, her words barely audible between heavy sobs. "I failed the trial."

Celeste smiled faintly and gently cupped her daughter’s tear-streaked face in both hands. "So what if you failed? Your grandmother can always give you another trial. You can try again next time, and you’ll do better."

Hearing her grandmother mentioned, Faye looked up into her mother’s soft blue eyes. Her crying slowly slowed to a halt.

To Faye, her grandmother was someone who could solve anything. There was no problem she couldn’t fix and no situation she couldn’t handle.

Seeing her calm down, Celeste pulled a handkerchief from her robe and gently wiped away her tears and nose. "Now tell me, how did it go? What did you learn in there?"

Faye blew her nose hard into the cloth, instantly shifting back into her usual talkative self. "There wasn’t a single living goblin left! Sister Magna killed every last one of them!"

A faint trace of disappointment crossed her face. But it was quickly replaced by sheer amazement, and she even bounced on her feet, unable to hide her excitement.

"You know, she’s a fire Witch? But she’s so ridiculously strong. I actually hit her face, and my own hand ended up hurting instead!" She glanced down at her bandaged hand with wide eyes. "Are all fire Witches built like that?"

She knew certain Witch bloodlines carried unique traits, much like how the Winterborne family could enter a calm, still state.

Celeste gave a subtle nod. "Yes, there are bloodlines known for their natural physical strength, sweetheart." She let out a quiet sigh. "However, he is not a Witch. And he certainly isn’t a girl like you."

She chose her words with care. She did not want to frighten Faye, or break her trust in people, right after her very first trial.

As a mother, Celeste felt a sting of guilt. She had always thought it was too early to teach her daughter about the world, especially about men. That was why Faye was naive enough to be fooled so easily.

Since it was her mistake, she had to make it right.

Celeste looked at her daughter’s confused expression and explained softly. "Magna is actually a boy. He can’t use fire spell at all."

She continued, pointing toward the corpse of the mother goblin lying off to the side. "The one who cleared out the cave was a Deviant goblin that somehow learned Witch spells."

Faye’s eyes widened in utter shock, which quickly twisted into pure frustration. "Wait... so he lied to me?"

This was the first time she experienced what gaslighting felt like.

Celeste couldn’t help but chuckle at her dramatic reaction. "No, my dear. You were the one who assumed he was a girl from the start. He probably just found it too much of a hassle to explain and didn’t bother correcting you."

Celeste certainly didn’t want her daughter growing up to view every man as a deceitful monster.

Even though Witches held power and ruled over these lands, they still relied on men for survival.

The tradition of the Shadows was proof enough of that.

No matter how powerful a Witch became, they all shared one fatal weakness. They depended completely on their spells.

A novice like Faye needed someone by her side in dangerous situations, if only to buy her precious seconds to chant and cast her magic.

For that, she needed to find a partner she could trust with her life.

Faye looked down, nervously kicking at a few pebbles as her mind tried to process everything.

"So if she..." She caught herself mid-sentence and corrected her words. "If he isn’t a Witch, how is he so strong? Are all boys that strong?"

The concept was still hard for her to grasp, and a boy being stronger than her was making her feel bad.

Celeste smiled warmly, standing up slowly and stroking her daughter’s soft hair.

"Why don’t we ask him ourselves?"

Right on cue, Celeste’s shadow on the ground trembled and froze over.

Titus rose from the icy darkness, holding a small body by the ankle, frozen completely in ice except for the head, dangling helplessly upside down.
