I'm the Only Magus in This Witch World

Chapter 39: How Big Is the Universe, Really?

The study room was dead silent. Azelith sat on the sofa, staring straight ahead with her lifeless eyes.

Celeste and Titus stood in front of her, side by side, their eyes fixed on her face. Every second felt long as they waited for her to speak.

Malakor had already gone back into Azelith’s shadow. But her shadow could be seen flickering every now and then. It showed that he too was waiting to hear the reason behind his Lady’s condition.

At last, Azelith took a slow breath, as if she were gathering the pieces of her thoughts one by one. Then she finally began to speak.

"I don’t want anyone to hear a single word of what I’m about to say, except the people in this room and Seraphina."

"I swear on the Matriarch of Life." Celeste said seriously, while Titus just nodded.

Titus caught Celeste’s sharp side glance and suddenly realized his mistake. "I swear on Celeste."

Azelith nodded before beginning her explanation with a question. "Do you know how my fate tracking spell actually works?"

Celeste hesitated for a moment at the question. The spell was a public type, not tied to any single family. Still, she hadn’t studied the spells of the Matriarch of Fate very much, so she knew very little about them.

She answered with what she knew. "It can track the past fate of anything, living or not."

Even while explaining what the spell could do, she felt a slight sense of awe. It was one of the top hundred spells known to the public, in terms of power.

In experienced hands, it could make anyone rich. Many Witches sought out Azelith and paid huge sums, just to have her find the information they wanted.

"That’s right." Azelith nodded, then took a deep breath. "Even though I’ve mastered this spell my whole life, I’m still far from being as skilled as the person who created it. So sometimes I fail. Like today."

She said it like it was a small failure, but her trembling voice was saying otherwise.

"I’m pretty sure now he must be from an ancient family. I ran into a strong protection spell on him, which cost me my ability to see."

For a moment, a slight look of happiness appeared on Titus’s and Celeste’s faces at what they heard. It felt like a gift sent to their family by a Goddess.

They didn’t question her words or her honesty. She had no reason to lie. Her failure and her blindness were proof enough that whoever had placed the protection spell had to be someone unimaginably strong.

Celeste hid the small smile that rose on her lips and spoke with concern in her voice. "I’m sorry to hear that. I will pay for whatever you need for the treatment."

Losing one’s sight wasn’t a big problem in this world. There were even spells that could bring the dead back to life.

Azelith waved her hand as she just refused. "No need for any compensation. It was my mistake for trying to force it to see more."

"If you are certain," Celeste said gently, maintaining her mask of concern. "I wanted to make him Faye’s Shadow. But do you think that’s still appropriate now that we know he’s from an ancient family?"

Magna was now a priceless jewel in their eyes. But he was a bloody one, a jewel they could only look at and admire, with no way to turn him into cash.

Azelith paused for a few seconds.

"I’ve never heard of ancient families giving their boys away. They always keep their assets to themselves. But this one, as you said, was abandoned by them. So I don’t see any problem with taking him into your family. They’re not the type to make a fuss over something this small."

What she said was just a guess. But it was already enough. It gave them permission to cash in their jewel.

"Thank you, Aunt Azelith. You really helped us greatly." Celeste didn’t hide her happiness this time.

Azelith just nodded, then lay back slowly onto the sofa. "Now leave me alone. I’m tired."

Celeste and Titus thanked her again, then left the room with lighter hearts, eager to go see Magna and Faye.

After they left, Azelith’s shadow trembled slightly. It rose as a blurred silhouette, then materialized into a man.

Malakor just stood there. He looked at her face for a few seconds first. Then, unable to hold back any longer, he finally asked.

"Why did you lie?"

He could tell that what she had told Celeste and Titus wasn’t the truth.

Her eyes going blind could be understandable. But that didn’t explain why she was so scared, why she was terrified.

And he was right.

"Malakor." Her voice was trembling more now. "Do you believe there are other worlds, realms besides our own?"

Malakor was slightly taken aback by the question, but he answered honestly. "Yes, I believe."

There were already a few realms he knew of. He had even visited some of them before, like the Underworld, the Fairy Hive, and the Realm of Giants.

Azelith realized what he was thinking and corrected him. "I’m not talking about the realms connected to ours. I mean the ones that are far, far away."

Her voice trembled even more, turning into a whisper as she finished the question. "The worlds out of reach of the five Great Mothers."

This time Malakor found himself stuck. The question was beyond anything he could understand.

As far as the history and beliefs he had grown up with went, everything had been created by the Matriarchs. There was nothing beyond them.

He wanted to answer, "I don’t believe." But looking at her face, he was sure the question was tied to whatever had shaken her and terrified her so much.

"It’s fine if you don’t believe," she whispered, slowly pulling her knees up to her chest, curling into a tight ball on the sofa. "I didn’t either. Not until today."

A harsh, ragged breath escaped her lips as a fresh shiver ran through her body.

"I just... I just need someone to believe me when I say... I have looked upon a God. ’’
