I'm the Only Magus in This Witch World

Chapter 40: Escape from Winterborne Estate

In the long corridor of the Winterborne family estate, two maids walked together, whispering their usual daily gossip.

"Where do you think Lady Celeste found that boy?" The younger one asked, glancing around now and then to check if anyone could hear her.

The older maid shrugged, adjusting the stack of linens in her arms. "How should I know? But judging by what he was wearing, I’d say they found him in the forest."

"The forest?" The younger one slowed her pace as her brows furrowed. "He didn’t look like a child who survived out in the woods. He was way too clean for that. Besides, how could a boy live out there all on his own?"

She was hoping to get a bit more gossip out of her, but the older maid just let out an annoyed sigh.

"You asked me a question, and I gave you an answer. If you’re not going to like the answers I give, don’t bother asking next time."

They were too busy with their talk to notice a large white ceramic vase as they walked past it. They would never know there was a boy hiding inside.

After they turned the corner, Magna slowly poked his head out of the vase to check his surroundings.

"Why are there so many maids here?" He was already starting to feel frustrated. Every corner he turned and every door he opened, there always seemed to be a maid nearby.

At least there were plenty of places to hide. He could probably live in the mansion for months and no one would ever find him.

Though that was the last thing he wanted. Right now, all he wanted was to find the mother goblin’s body and escape the mansion.

He pushed himself out of the vase, and using his sharp hearing, he found a path with fewer footsteps and whispers. Then he started moving quickly.

He spent at least an hour checking every door he could see and every corner he could reach, but he couldn’t find any trace of the mother goblin.

Still, he found something useful.

A bathroom.

His body was already telling him it was time to get rid of the food he had eaten. So before leaving the mansion, he decided he didn’t want to miss the chance to use a proper toilet, and he walked inside slowly.

The bathroom was big, with more than one toilet inside, probably built for the maids to use.

At first glance, it looked fairly modern, almost like something from Earth. The walls and floors were covered in tile, decorated with colorful flowers.

Behind separate stall doors, there were holes dug into the ground, all connected to a single sewage system. There were also separate stalls meant for showering.

The only difference was that there were no taps or showerheads. Instead, there were only large water tanks and buckets. It seemed plumbing hadn’t been invented in this world yet.

He also found small pieces of cloth used for toilet paper, which made him quite happy.

He stepped into one of the stalls to take care of his business.

He ended up staying inside for more than ten minutes, losing track of time as he enjoyed the small luxury of finally getting to relieve himself properly.

When he finished, he listened for any footsteps outside the door. Hearing nothing, he decided to take a quick shower as well.

He found warm water inside one of the large tanks. He wasn’t about to miss that chance either.

Too bad there was no soap around. But instead, he found a small container filled with what looked like crushed, chewed-up flower petals.

They smelled really good. He thought they were probably meant to be used as shampoo or soap.

’This world needs a man to invent women’s cosmetics,’ he thought as he stepped into a shower stall.

He even started planning his future. If he couldn’t find a way to learn how to cast spells, maybe he could become an inventor instead.

He more or less remembered how to make perfume, soap, and toothpaste from videos he had watched back on Earth on Theytube. In a world led by women, things like that could make him rich for life.

After another ten minutes of a relaxing, satisfying shower, he finally stepped out of the bathroom, feeling completely refreshed, with the faint smell of flowers still on his skin.

But the happiness on his face didn’t last very long.

The moment he stepped out the door, he saw a figure standing there.

She had blonde hair that flowed down to her waist, and she wore a pure white robe that perfectly traced every line of her body. Her eyes were a deep blue, and they were fixed right on him.

"You look happy." Celeste said with a smile as she waited near the bathroom door.

’When did she get here?’ Magna froze for a moment. He had thought he was being careful the entire time.

He was sure that even if every maid in the mansion spent their whole lives searching for him, they would have zero chance of finding him.

But Celeste wasn’t a maid. She was a Witch.

"Ah... haha... You have very nice toilets here." He forced an awkward smile, deciding to put off his escape plan for now.

"Yes, we do," Celeste chuckled. "But next time you need anything, just ask someone. This place is big. We don’t want you to get lost."

She spoke gently, with a smile on her face, but Magna felt a chill run down his spine as he looked at her.

"Yes, sorry. I just wanted to find the goblin who raised me."

Celeste already knew that. She had been following him for the past hour, watching what he was trying to do.

She also could easily guess that Magna wanted to escape the mansion.

She couldn’t really blame him for that, especially seeing the deep red mark around his neck already starting to turn purple.

After everything Titus had done, and then Azelith, any child would find this place dangerous and start thinking about running away.

Still, she was impressed that Magna hadn’t tried to escape right away. Instead, he had wanted to bring the goblin’s body with him first.

’He really is a good child,’ she thought with a quiet sigh, her eyes growing warmer. ’Why would his family abandon him?’

"Come with me. I was planning to start her funeral." She said, holding out her hand.

Magna looked at the hand held out to him. With no other choice, he took it, and they started walking down the corridor.

At least if he could see the mother goblin given a proper grave, his mind would feel more at ease, and he could continue his escape plan later.

What Magna didn’t know was that he had already become far more valuable to the Winterborne family than he could have imagined.

And he had no idea how far they were willing to go to make him feel like he belonged among them.

They wanted him to choose to stay.

He wouldn’t understand just how serious they were about that until he saw the place they had chosen as the mother goblin’s final resting place.
