I'm the Only Magus in This Witch World

Chapter 49: Is Faye Actually a Prodigy?

While Celeste struggled to find the right words in the face of this little miracle, Magna beat her to it.

"Hey, you’re making my soup go cold. Stop it." He hadn’t even gotten a chance to taste it yet, and the thought of it going cold before he could annoyed him.

In the next instant, the chill in the room vanished completely, and Faye’s face snapped back to her usual cheerful expression. "Yes, yes, I won’t do it again."

Then she sat back down and started eating too, leaving her mother and father staring blankly, first at Faye, then at Magna, both of them still trying to process whether what just happened had really just happened.

"Faye, can you show me that again?" Celeste couldn’t hold herself back. She needed to be sure that what she had just seen wasn’t some kind of fluke.

"Um..." Faye looked troubled, glancing at Magna’s face first, seeking his permission.

She was still scared that if she upset him, he might never play with her again.

Her weren’t the only eyes on Magna now either. Celeste and Titus were both watching him with strange expressions too.

’Can I really not just eat this in my room?’ Magna fall into the same thought. He wasn’t used to being the center of this much attention.

"Go ahead." He gave the permission, then dipped his spoon into his soup and started eating quickly, trying to finish before it went cold.

[New substance detected... Human blood soup...]

[Energy particles detected...]

[Converting nutrients into energy...]

’Hey...’ Magna suddenly lost his appetite. Even Gaia seemed to be in on ruining his morning.

Meanwhile, Faye slipped back into her act, all emotion draining from her face as a cold chill began radiating from her body once again.

By now, Celeste and Titus were completely convinced. Their daughter was showing off a mastery that normally took decades right in front of their eyes.

Even Seraphina, considered the most brilliant Winterborne of them all, hadn’t reached this level of mastery over her bloodline trait until she was past twenty, while Celeste herself had only gotten there closer to thirty.

Compared to them, Faye wasn’t just talented. She was a prodigy.

But knowing that she actually wasn’t, the husband and wife exchanged a quick glance, sharing a brief, silent understanding.

Both then turned their eyes at the same time toward Magna, who currently had his bowl tipped straight up to his mouth, gulping down the rest of his soup at full speed.

’Ahh, that was good. Just needed a little more seasoning, and it would’ve been the best soup I’ve ever had,’ Magna thought contentedly, wiping his mouth with a napkin.

The moment he looked up and found both of them staring straight at him, he flinched again. ’What now?’

Even Titus was giving him a strange smile, which somehow made him even more uncomfortable than anything else so far.

"Kid, want to do some sparring with me after breakfast?" Titus asked directly, a hint of real eagerness slipping into his voice.

He was practically dying to start training this kid, just to see what kind of monster he could carve out of this rough, unpolished gem.

Magna forced an awkward smile in response. "Sorry, I was actually planning to read some books. Maybe some other time?"

He was fairly certain this madman was planning to break a few of his bones under the excuse of practice.

"Reading is good too." Celeste jumped in this time, just as eager. "How about I show you a few books myself? I could also teach you a few tricks for impressing people in high society."

Unlike Titus, what Celeste wanted to teach him was the art of manipulating people.

She had already noticed just how much control Magna already had over Faye.

Even believing he had done it completely by accident, without even realizing it, it only showed his potential.

If he ever learned proper social skills, what kind of terrifyingly influential person could he become, even in a society as sharp tongued as Witch society?

Still, Magna turned this offer down too. "That sounds nice, but what I really want to read are some history books. They’re pretty interesting, you know?"

Beyond history, what he really wanted to study was magic and mana, but he couldn’t afford to show his real interest in those topics just yet.

Hearing his answer, and noticing his lack of interest in either offer, Celeste and Titus didn’t push him further.

For now, their main goal was simply to get the boy used to being part of their family, to stop him from feeling like an outsider.

Faye, who had already dropped out of her serene state, was pouting in her chair. "What about playing? Didn’t you promise we’d go back to it after breakfast?"

Luckily, Celeste was there to keep her daughter from bothering Magna any further. "Sweetheart, don’t you need to sleep before you even think about playing? Look at those dark circles under your eyes. You’ll turn ugly if you don’t get your proper sleep."

Blunt as her words were, they worked instantly as Faye shut her mouth right away, clearly not wanting to become ugly.

Magna, watching this, picked up a new idea. ’Oh, that actually works?’ He decided he might try that line himself someday, whenever he needed an excuse to get away from her.

The rest of breakfast passed mostly with Faye and Celeste chatting away as well as watching Magna eat as if his stomach had no bottom.

At some point, he even started competing with Titus over the food, the two of them eating everything on the table until nothing edible was left.

He could feel the warm energy inside his body starting to build up again from scratch, but this time the threshold was so high that it hadn’t even filled a tenth of the way.

He guessed that at his current digestive speed, he would fill it again before the next day was over.

He also noticed a good sign, his digestion and the amount of food his body could handle in a single meal kept growing on their own, a little more each day.

After everything finished on the table Magna was the first to leave the dining hall, using the bathroom as his excuse.

Before heading back to his room, he stopped by the study first to grab the book he hadn’t gotten the chance to read yet.

He went straight to his private bathroom. It wasn’t as modern as anything on Earth, but it was still far better than the smelly cave he had grown up in.

Once he finished emptying his stomach, he took a shower, using those same crushed flower petals in place of soap. Then he changed into fresh clothes, already folded and set aside for him.

When he was done, he closed the curtains again and lit a few candles, letting the room settle into a soft, dim glow. He grabbed the book and sat down on his bed, legs crossed.

He couldn’t sense anyone nearby besides the maid waiting outside his door, so he cleared his mind to focus, opened the book to where he had left off, and started reading.

This time, he was determined to finish it and at least learn the basics of how mana and spells actually worked.
