I'm the Only Magus in This Witch World
Chapter 50: Is Chantless Spellcasting Really Possible?"Words are the first requirements. It helps the Witch shape and control their mana. "Magna murmured the paragraph he was reading.
There were actually three main things needed to control mana and turn it into a proper spell.
The specific words of the spell, the honorific name of the God they were trying to borrow power from, and the mana reserves inside their body.
There was also a point about how important a Witch’s voice was. While saying the words needed for a spell, the sound had to come out right.
In a way, as Magna understood it, voice and chanting words worked together as one technique.
With the sound, Witches stirred the mana inside them and made it move through their bodies and the world around them.
At the same time, through the honorific names, they were asking permission from the God, using that God’s authority to turn their mana into the element needed for the spell they wanted to cast.
The last step was to choose the right words for the spell they wanted to cast, put them in the right combination, and make the spell happen.
The interesting part was the next paragraph. For one spell, apart from the God’s horrific names, different activation words could be used.
The only thing that mattered was that the person’s mana inside their body was directed and controlled the right way while they said those words.
’So voice is the main tool here for controlling mana. As long as a Witch makes the right sounds, could a spell activate even without chanting?’ he thought deeply.
If Celene had been there to hear his thoughts, she would have been completely shocked. It was an understanding that only experienced Witches could reach.
Most Witches were not even aware that the last chanting words of the spells they used were just for show.
They were only there to help them make the right sounds, training words passed down through history from one generation to the next.
It was like an opera singer practicing a high note, repeating the same word over and over, ma, ma, ma, ma.
To find the right sound, a Witch repeated the words written in the books again and again.
Also, the quality of the voice and the combination of high and sharp sounds could affect the spell too. It all came down to how well they could control their voice.
The honorific names of the Gods were still needed, of course.
They worked like the landing permission a plane needed from the tower before it could land on the runway.
’It doesn’t sound that hard.’ Magna found the idea quite simple. He really wanted to test it, but sadly he had no mana to try it with.
Then he came to the section about the special trait in women’s bodies that let them store mana.
According to the book, it was like an organ found only in women, one that let the body make its own mana and store it there.
This was true for humans, monsters, other races, even plants and insects. It was a trait only found in females, since it had never been seen in a male.
’What an unfair world.’ Magna felt frustrated again about this unfairness.
Then he reached the next section of the book, the one about Shadows.
Just like Celene had said, the opening lines talked about why a Witch needed a Shadow.
Chanting words and preparing a spell took time and focus, so most of the time a Witch needed a Shadow to protect them during that process.
What really caught Magna’s interest was that after a Shadow formed a contract with a Witch, the Shadow could control part of the Witch’s mana on their own and use some basic spells they had mastered, all without chanting.
The book didn’t explain why Shadows could use spells without chanting a single word, and Magna got quite stuck on this part.
’If mana needs sound to be triggered and controlled, and if chanting the God’s honorific name is needed for a spell to form, then why can Shadows skip both of these main steps completely?’
He felt there was something important there that he had to understand.
Unfortunately, when he turned the last page, he reached the end of the book without learning anything more.
He thought maybe there was a second volume of the book. So he got up and went to the study room to find it, wanting to read it as soon as possible before the fresh information and thoughts in his mind faded away.
When he got back to the study room, there was no one there, and for the first time since he had come to this world, he felt lucky about it.
Then, after he put the book back where he had taken it from, he checked the next one to see if it was the second volume he was looking for.
But unfortunately it wasn’t. It was just a book about a few weak water spells.
He didn’t give up. He thought maybe the books were placed on the shelf randomly, so he started checking the others too, reading the titles on them one by one. But after he checked every book, he still couldn’t find it.
’Is there really no book that explains this at all?’ He decided that maybe he could ask Celeste about it later.
As for asking Titus, he didn’t even consider it. He had decided not to get closer than five steps to that psychopath.
Luckily for him, for the second time in a row, luck was on his side. The study door opened, and Celeste walked in, wearing a blue robe with her yellow hair falling down to her waist.
"Hm? I thought you went back to your room to read." She said in a quite surprised tone.
"I finished the book and came back to get another one." Magna replied, trying to find the right moment to ask his question.
"You already finished a book? Which one?" She could hardly believe it. Even the thinnest book on the shelves was quite thick, and what was written inside was not something easy to understand.
When Magna showed her the book he was reading, without feeling any need to hide it, she became even more surprised.
"You read this book?" She raised her brow slightly.
She didn’t find it strange that Magna was reading a book about the basics of magic. Curiosity was curiosity, and knowledge, no matter what kind, was something everyone was always chasing after.
What surprised her was that the book was quite technical and hard to understand. It was not something you could just read and put down in under an hour.
She wanted to believe that Magna, being a child, had just skimmed through it. But she knew the boy wasn’t just some ordinary child, so she wanted to test him with a question.
"So what do you think about it? Did you understand what it says?"
Magna shrugged his shoulders. "The only thing I understood is how hopeless I am."
Celeste chuckled at his answer, exactly as she had expected. But his next question really put her into shock.
