I'm the Only Magus in This Witch World
Chapter 71: Teach Me Your Strongest Spell Before I GoTo fully counter a user of Time spells, someone needed access to spells from the Matriarch of Fate instead.
Celeste knew a handful of spells from that branch, but since she wasn’t devoted to that particular Matriarch, all of them were basic ones. None had the power to break a barrier capable of manipulating time and space itself.
Titus spoke up, gathering his thoughts quickly. "What about Lady Azelith? She should be able to help."
Azelith was a 12th Trial Witch, far stronger than Celeste.
Also, her mastery of the Matriarch of Fate’s spells was a major advantage.
But Celeste shook her head again. "Aunt Azelith left the mansion a while ago. If we try to reach her now, it might already be too late."
Titus clenched his fists so tightly that even his helmet couldn’t fully hide the rising anger and worry radiating off him.
Meanwhile, Celeste kept her emotions carefully in check as she turned to look at Magna.
"This spell seems to only affect specific targets. I don’t know if it was designed as a trap, or if it’s just a flaw in the spell itself, but it looks like it lets someone with low chronological maturity, in simpler terms, a child, pass in and out of the dimension through some kind of medium."
Magna thought it sounded a lot more like an intentional trap, the kind only a genuinely twisted mind could design.
Celeste continued explaining patiently.
"The medium needs to hold a considerable amount of mana, and it needs to have stayed connected to that dimension for some time. For you, this Witch Hat was the perfect key, letting you open a door and step inside. Faye must have touched something similar, something that triggered the same hidden passage for her."
She was explaining everything in such careful detail that Magna started to suspect there was a reason behind it.
"You want me to go back there and find her?" He asked, keeping his expression steady, already understanding exactly what she was hoping for.
Celeste’s calm, emotionless expression held for a few seconds, her eyes fixed steadily on him.
Then a small, pained smile began to form on her lips, and her eyes started to well up.
She had just canceled her serene state.
Her lips trembled slightly as she spoke. "That’s a dangerous place, belonging to a Witch who’s probably at the 10th Trial, maybe even higher. Even for me going there myself would likely be fatal."
Her voice trembled more and more as she continued, though she forced her tears back each time. "I can’t ask you to go there. I can’t ask you to throw your life away for something so selfish. But..."
She couldn’t bring herself to finish the sentence.
She knew time flowed much faster inside that dimension.
For all she knew, while they stood there talking, Faye might already be in that Witch’s hands, drawing her final breath.
Still, she couldn’t bear the thought of leaving her little girl in that place, dead or alive.
"I’ll do it." Magna said with a sigh.
It wasn’t out of pity for Celeste’s painful face. Maybe a little.
The real reason was that he would genuinely feel a kind of pain himself, imagining a future where that occasionally psychotic, mostly hyperactive girl wasn’t around anymore to pester him.
Hearing his answer, Celeste finally let her tears fall freely, her voice breaking as she choked out. "Thank you..."
’it just had to be any other day I walk through the forest and collect some fruit.’ Magna thought bitterly.
Titus stood there silently the whole time, not saying a word, but the fists he had been clenching moments ago had finally relaxed, and the trembling in his body had faded too.
"So what do I need to do? Just touch the hat again?" Magna asked.
Celeste wiped her tears first, then turned to her Shadow. "Titus."
Understanding exactly what she meant, he pulled a pouch out from somewhere inside his frost armor.
’Is there some kind of dimensional storage built into that armor?’ Magna wondered, remembering how Titus had once pulled bandages out of thin air too.
Titus took a step forward, kneeled down in front of him, and handed him the pouch. "These are recovery pills. Just one can heal any wound, as long as it’s not fatal, and restore your stamina too."
Magna took the pouch and looked inside, finding five small, yellow capsules, each meant to be easy to swallow.
The moment he picked one up, he could feel that same warm, tingling energy radiating from it, meaning it was packed with an incredibly dense amount of mana, even more concentrated than the golden sunberry he had eaten before.
Titus stood back up, then turned to one of the hunters standing on the side and called out, "Your daggers. Give them to him."
The hunter startled as he was called out suddenly, but understanding what was wanted from him, he immediately took the daggers from his belt with their sheaths and handed them to Magna.
Magna took them, taking a quick look. They were not the best, but not bad either, almost the same quality and size as the ones he used in the training field.
As he placed the daggers on his belt in a position where he could easily draw them, Celeste spoke, holding out the hat toward him. "I don’t know how long you’ll need to stay there before coming back, but for us, it’ll probably feel like just a few minutes, even seconds. So... please come back safely."
Magna could feel the depth of her sorrow, and how genuinely she meant that wish, as he answered. "We will."
He wasn’t entirely sure he could actually find Faye, or even find his way back to that same hut again. But at the very least, he wanted her to feel a little more at ease with that promise.
He reached out for the hat, but he stopped suddenly before he touched it. "Before I leave, can you show me a strong attack spell?"
For a moment, surprise mixed in with the sorrow and worry on Celeste’s face.
Soon her surprise faded, leaving only more sorrow and worry behind.
She thought this was Magna’s last request, to see a spell one more time before he died.
Celeste forced her tears not to fall again as she pulled the hat back. "I guess that was too much to ask of you. You really shouldn’t risk your life like this."
She had said it with so much pain, but she just didn’t want to send another child to die alongside her daughter.
’Oh, did she misunderstand me?’ Magna realized that his wish to see a spell had caused something he didn’t mean to.
"I will go. Just show me the spell already. Just chanting the words is fine. We don’t have much time, remember?" He had no way to explain why he only wanted to see the spell cast, so he pushed the words out in a tone that was a little urgent and angry.
Even though Celeste looked very taken aback by his behavior and his sudden outburst, she still nodded.
"O Vein of the Living World, River that has flowed since before the First Dawn, Silent Mother of Rain and Sea.... By the footprint of frozen time, let the blood of the world turn to frost.... Unravel, Glacial Calamity."
She only chanted the words, her voice floating like a soft poem.
’Well, that was quite long,’ Magna thought as he began to murmur softly, trying not to forget the notes.
He finally reached out, grabbed the hat, and vanished from their sight.
Leaving behind Celeste with worry and hope written all over her face, and Titus, whose hands were clenched so tightly that the frost armor coating them began to crack.
