"Why are you here?" Renna hissed through gritted teeth, glaring hatingly at Magna’s annoying face.

"Just wanted to ask a question." He shrugged, seemingly unfazed as he stepped closer.

"What?" Renna was holding herself back from burning him right there.

She was already angry from their fight earlier, and now, seeing that he had followed her all this way, she had every reason to cook him on the spot.

His question only gave her one more reason to be furious.

"I was just curious. How come your clothes don’t burn when you use your bloodline trait?"

He really did look curious.

He had already learned that Shadows, like Titus with his frost armor, carried artifacts. But he still had no idea what kind of power a Witch’s clothes or hat held.

He especially knew the Witch Hat had to be something special. After all, they were going through deadly trials just to get it.

While he waited for an answer, Renna started to speak.

"O Eclipse of the Fading Sun, darkness that has gathered since before..."

The moment Magna heard she was casting a spell, he lunged at her, clapping a hand over her mouth as the two of them fell to the ground together.

"Why the hell did you suddenly start chanting?" He asked, still clueless, until he saw her face turn completely red.

’Oh, is she one of those shy types?’ He thought, staring right into her crimson eyes and red face.

But a moment later, his hand started to burn, and he jumped back to get away from her.

"I will kill you." She hissed with anger as her mouth was finally free, now looking literally burning with rage.

Even the grass on the ground beneath her started to wither and burn slowly.

Again, her clothes and dark red Witch Hat seemed to be completely unaffected by the scorching heat.

Anyway, Magna was no longer dwelling on that question.

"Wait, wait, you got it wrong." He waved his hands, trying to calm her down. "I mixed up my questions, okay? What I meant to ask is if you’re here to find the Faceless Witch."

That was the other question he had been curious about. The answer was already obvious, but he wanted to ask it anyway.

Renna finally paused at the question, a little composure returning to her face, but she still snapped. "Why do you care?"

For a moment she wondered if Magna wanted to help her find the Witch, and that made her decide to listen.

"Why do I care?" Even Magna didn’t really know.

At first he just wanted to leave her alone and not worry about what she wanted to do.

But for some reason he couldn’t bring himself to ignore her, and he ended up following behind her.

’Maybe I just want to help that skeleton?’ He sighed, only now realizing how much Morrigan had actually affected him.

She was just too similar to Mother Goblin, and without meaning to, Magna found himself wanting to help her.

At the very least, he wanted to keep her daughter from dying for nothing.

"Didn’t Lady Celeste and your grandmother already decide to attack her tonight? Why do you want to fight her now?" He asked, wanting to know what reason was pushing her toward this suicide.

"Again, why do you care?" Renna could tell the boy was only there to annoy her, causing her temperature to rise again.

Magna finally understood he wouldn’t get anywhere this way, so he gave her a reason for why he cared. "Because she asked me to watch over her girl before she gone."

It was, of course, a lie to save the moment, but it made Renna’s expression change.

The heat radiating off her body dropped lower and lower as her angry look slowly faded until she let out an exhausted sigh.

"She’s just like my grandmother. Asking every man to take care of me, as if I’m someone who needs to be taken care of at all." She murmured, her voice trembling slightly.

Her body suddenly felt so heavy that she leaned back against the tree behind her and slowly slid down to sit at its base.

Magna looked at her, so helpless, her legs pulled up and her head resting between her knees. The pointy hat on her head made her look like a mushroom in that position.

He felt his emotions caught somewhere between pity and laughter.

Magna could understand her in a way, since he had once felt the same thing.

While Mother Goblin was fighting to the death just to protect him in the cave, he had felt so terrible that, even in his baby body, he wanted to get up and started hitting every goblin that was hurting Green.

It didn’t matter if he got hurt or even died doing it. The only thing on his mind was wanting to hurt them back, just to ease a little of the anger and helplessness inside him.

He understood her feelings as he walked closer. "Do you know I was raised in a cave?"

He looked at her while slowly sitting down beside her. His ears stayed alert for any sign she was casting a spell, but all he could hear were her quiet sobs.

When he couldn’t hear any chanting or see any sign she was about to attack, he continued. "When my birth mother abandoned me in a river, a goblin found me and became my mom.

Her group in the cave shut her out just for taking me in, and she had to go out alone every day to find food for both of us. She came back empty handed most of the time, her whole body covered in scars."

As Magna kept telling his story, her sobs slowly started to fade.

"In the end, the other goblins in the cave couldn’t take it anymore and decided to attack me while she was outside to find food." He sighed, remembering that night again.

"She came rushing back just to protect me, even though she could have escaped alone. She died so I could live."

Now even his eyes started to waver. It was the first time since he gained his cold blooded assassin trait that he felt this emotional.

"Do you know she was a deviant? It’s a term I learned recently from books. There were spell books in the cave, so she probably became one from reading them."

He turned to look at her, still curled up like a mushroom, and said. "I recently realized those books were probably your mother’s books. Thanks to them, that goblin became a deviant, and thanks to that, I’m still alive today instead of dead near that river."

He let out a sigh, meaning every word. "So when you ask why I care, this is why. Your mother is, in a way, the reason I’m alive right now.

So I want to do the same thing for her, help her daughter live too. ’’

That was when Renna finally raised her head to look at him.

Magna saw many emotions on her face, but shock was the most prominent.

He just couldn’t pinpoint whether that shock was due to him being raised in a cave by a goblin or her mother’s books ending up in that same cave.
