Chen Changsheng naturally knew where Jian Shenghua was.
Earlier, he had split off a wisp of his soul and concealed it on Jian Shenghua, leaving him perfectly aware of where the ghost cultivator had fled.
He did not know what Jian Shenghua intended to do, however. Furthermore, he had yet to see the Demon Lord pulling the strings. It seemed best to delay the matter for now and see if he could glean any useful information from Jian Shenghua.
To his slight disappointment, Jian Shenghua had simply hidden in a cave for days, refusing to come out. This left Chen Changsheng rather helpless, as he didn't have the time to waste waiting them out.
Running into the Evil Phoenix today was a stroke of luck. He might as well use him to draw the snake from its hole and push things forward.
Hearing this, the Evil Phoenix fell silent, lowering his head as if lost in thought.
Meanwhile, far away.
On a desolate island in the Cultivation World, Jian Shenghua, hiding within the mountains, suddenly opened his eyes.
"Hmm?"
What Jian Shenghua didn't know was that a hidden divine sense was resting at his waist, observing everything. When he spoke those words, both that wisp of divine sense and Chen Changsheng himself, far away in the Mortal World, were taken aback.
Chen Changsheng's expression turned inexplicably solemn.
His gaze flickered as he reassessed the Evil Phoenix.
It seemed Jian Shenghua knew exactly what was happening around the Evil Phoenix at any given moment.
Chen Changsheng swept his gaze over the Evil Phoenix once more, startling him. That look seemed to see right through him, leaving nothing hidden.
Chen Changsheng found it strange. He hadn't noticed any trace of a divine sense or Dharma Instrument left on the Evil Phoenix's body.
So why was this happening?
Could it be some ancient Divine Ability or technique?
The Evil Phoenix paused before finally speaking. "I agree."
A smile crept onto Chen Changsheng's lips. Suddenly, things were getting complicated.
It looked like he still had to put on an act.
Since Jian Shenghua had received the news, he likely wouldn't reveal himself so easily. It remained to be seen whether he would go seek out that Demon Lord.
Chen Changsheng was also curious to see what this Demon Lord looked like.
As he pondered, he suddenly heard movement from Jian Shenghua's side.
"Lure him over. I will beseech the Demon Lord to slay him!"
Before Chen Changsheng, the Evil Phoenix's expression shifted slightly, though he recovered his composure in the blink of an eye.
This suited Chen Changsheng perfectly.
The Evil Phoenix said, "He isn't in the Mortal World. I need you to send me to the Cultivation World."
"That isn't difficult," Chen Changsheng replied with a smile.
With that, he raised his hand, and the Gourd beside him flew out.
"What is the meaning of this?"
"Just stay in the Gourd for now."
Before the Evil Phoenix could protest, the Gourd sucked him inside.
Chen Changsheng caught it, and his two Immortal Swords and the Black Pagoda returned to his sides.
Having done this, Chen Changsheng prepared to head to the Cultivation World.
But then, he remembered something else.
That person he had just met in the woods... that was Zhao Wuji, right?
Chen Changsheng raised his hand to perform a quick divination, instantly understanding the situation.
"He resembles his father."
Chen Changsheng murmured, deciding not to concern himself any further. It was best not to interfere with the affairs of the Mortal World.
Taking flight on his sword, he headed straight for the Cultivation World.
At the same time, the divine sense he had split off kept a close eye on Jian Shenghua's movements.
After receiving the news, Jian Shenghua had left his Cave Abode and traveled far away.
Crossing several Immortal Mountains and traveling over a vast stretch of ocean, his figure finally came to a halt over the open sea.
Jian Shenghua's gaze fell upon the Desolate Sea.
Bowing respectfully, he called out, "Jian Shenghua requests an audience with the Demon Lord!"
His words faded into the silence.
The surface of the sea below him suddenly parted. Amidst the surging crash of the waves, a stone gate emerged from the divided currents.
Jian Shenghua stepped forward and passed through the gate.
The scene before his eyes abruptly transformed, as if he had stepped into a miniature world.
When he looked closely...
He saw a sea of blood. Corpses drifted in the crimson waters, and right in the center sat a figure with his legs crossed. From all directions, the fresh blood formed into thin threads that continuously gathered toward him.
Jian Shenghua stepped forward, dropped to his knees, and bowed deeply.
"Greetings, Demon Lord."
The figure sitting amid the sea of blood slowly opened his eyes.
"Why do you seek me?"
His voice sounded somewhat ancient, yet it carried an undeniable majesty.
Jian Shenghua stated his purpose and recounted everything that had just occurred.
After listening, the Demon Lord tossed out a Blood Bead and simply said, "Hold this object. When the time is right, I will appear."
Having said that, he waved his hand dismissively.
As if not daring to speak further, Jian Shenghua slowly retreated.
In the blink of an eye, he was back above the Desolate Sea. As for the stone gate, it was instantly swallowed back up by the ocean depths.
The divine sense hidden on Jian Shenghua pondered this at length.
This so-called Demon Lord seemed slightly different from what Chen Changsheng had imagined, and vastly different from what Lihua had described.
Could he be an imposter?
Chen Changsheng decided not to overthink it for now. It wasn't long before he arrived in the Cultivation World, stopping to rest at a market on an immortal island.
He then released the Evil Phoenix.
The Evil Phoenix proved quite cooperative, leading the way with the clear intention of drawing Chen Changsheng into a trap.
Deciding on turning the scheme against the schemer, Chen Changsheng simply followed along, pretending to know nothing.
"This is what I use to communicate with him. It won't be long before he comes looking for me."
The Evil Phoenix held up a rock to explain.
But Chen Changsheng could see clearly that the stone simply had a concealment array placed on it to prevent others from seeing what lay inside. In reality, it was just a useless rock.
It was merely an Illusory Veil, meant to make him believe the lie.
He had to admit, the Evil Phoenix's acting was quite good. He was putting on a full show, leaving very few flaws.
"We just wait here, and he will come find us on his own?" Chen Changsheng asked.
The Evil Phoenix nodded. "Rest assured. Within a day—half a day at the earliest—he will come looking for me."
"Do all you demonic cultivators use such methods to communicate?"
"Not entirely. I've heard there are more powerful methods that allow for voice transmission, but such things are rare."
"Is that so..." Chen Changsheng murmured. "Lately, demonic cultivators have been running rampant outside the Mortal World. Logically, you would be better off returning to the Cultivation World; at the very least, you would be of some help. Why remain in the Mortal World?"
"The Cultivation World is far from peaceful..." The Evil Phoenix sighed. "Look at the current situation. The Immortal Mountains and Immortal Sects everywhere are hunting down demonic cultivators. I'm better off hiding in the Mortal World."
"That is true," Chen Changsheng replied.
The Evil Phoenix fell silent, his thoughts unknown.
Chen Changsheng also stopped talking, taking out a piece of candied fruit from his sleeve to eat.
Seeing this, the Evil Phoenix paused. "A grown man like you actually eats such sweet stuff?"
Chen Changsheng said, "What This Chen eats is none of your business, is it?"
The Evil Phoenix smacked his lips. Seeing how much Chen Changsheng seemed to be enjoying it, he said, "Give me a piece."
"There's none for you."
"Stingy," the Evil Phoenix grumbled. "I'm doing you a favor, after all, and you won't even give me a slight benefit."
He certainly had a thick skin.
