Tang Yuerong looked at him. "Name your terms."
The shopkeeper shook his head again. "If that is how it is, I will have to ask you to leave."
Tang Yuerong sighed softly. "White Night is everywhere in this vast jianghu. Can you truly not bend the rules at all? Or am I simply not worthy?"
The shopkeeper smiled. "Ordinary people are not worthy, of course, but White Night can certainly make an exception for the head of the Tang Family Trading Firm. Just not here. This is Shangjing City, nowhere else. Here, your status is not quite enough to break the rules."
Tang Yuerong smiled and murmured under her breath.
"Is that so?"
The shopkeeper rested his chin on his hand. "Those are the terms. If you wish to ask your question, then ask. If not, I will show you to the door."
"Just tell me if this person is still alive, and where I can find him now," Tang Yuerong said. "That will be enough."
The shopkeeper nodded. "Agreed. But in exchange, I need you to invite someone to Shangjing for us."
"The Second House Master of Nanbeilou, the Spear Immortal, Wang Ruyi."
Tang Yuerong frowned and rose to her feet. "I will ask someone else."
The shopkeeper paused. "Rest assured, we mean her no harm. We simply have a matter that requires an audience with the Spear Immortal. It has nothing to do with the jianghu."
Tang Yuerong stopped in her tracks, but instead of agreeing, she shook her head.
"Extinguish the lamp. Show me out."
Tang Yuerong's voice was ice-cold, stripped of all emotion.
Taken aback, the shopkeeper reflected that this woman seemed to change by the day. Both her tone and bearing were growing remarkably similar to the former Tang Mingjing.
He shook his head and repeated, "We truly mean no harm. In fact, we need to ask her for a favor."
When Tang Yuerong remained silent, the shopkeeper grew a little anxious. Taking a deep breath, he offered another concession to make her stay. "We can bring Rong Shili back for you."
Tang Yuerong cast him a sidelong glance. "I want him brought to the Tang Manor within three days. Furthermore, I will not help you trick Ruyi into coming up here. The most I will do is write her a letter explaining the entire situation, including the fact that you need a favor from her. Whether she agrees or not will be entirely up to fate."
"This..."
The shopkeeper hesitated, torn.
"If that does not work for you, then extinguish the lamp!" Tang Yuerong said flatly.
The shopkeeper gritted his teeth. "Fine! We will consider this a losing deal for White Night!"
With that, the shopkeeper raised a hand and extinguished the lamp. As though afraid Tang Yuerong might change her mind or drive the price down even further, he hurriedly led her out of the hidden room.
As light gradually seeped back into their vision, they walked a short distance and returned to the Wine Tavern.
Neither of them spoke another word about what they had discussed in the dark room.
This was also the rule of White Night.
The shopkeeper resumed his polite smile. "Would you care for a cup of tea before you go?"
"No need."
Tang Yuerong waved her hand. "I will take my leave first."
"Take care."
Only after seeing Tang Yuerong out did the shopkeeper slump into a chair.
"What is with that attitude!"
The shopkeeper curled his lip. Then, as if his vocal cords had shifted, the crisp voice of a woman emerged from beneath that rugged, pockmarked masculine face.
"Sigh..."
The shopkeeper let out another sigh, then released a kingfisher into the air.
Before long, two or three people arrived at the tavern.
They stood in silence. After the shopkeeper explained the entire situation, he closed the doors to the Wine Tavern, and they vanished to parts unknown.
...
Later that night.
Rong Shili was "invited" to the Tang Manor.
He walked with his head lowered, not saying a word. The men walking behind him were all jianghu experts; he could determine that just from their auras.
Although their tone had been fairly polite when they found him, Rong Shili still could not make sense of the situation.
He had spent these past years wandering, traveling from the Northwest to Yuanchuan, and then to the Southern Region. After so many years, he had aged beyond recognition. All he wanted now was to find a place to settle down. He had been doing perfectly fine in the Southern Parts, but then the men of Prince Jin and Prince Yu came knocking at his door. He had no choice but to leave. He had absolutely no desire to involve himself in the conflicts of the world anymore.
Everyone he followed ended up perishing; the sheer mental exhaustion had left him completely drained.
He had been forced to head north, passing through several checkpoints and barely managing to shake off Prince Yu and Prince Jin. He had been right on the verge of reaching Shangjing, only to have his path suddenly blocked by these people.
Who could possibly just accept that?
Rong Shili raised his eyes to look at the plaque hanging over the estate.
He froze, somewhat surprised.
"Tang?"
"Tang Family Trading Firm?"
Startled, Rong Shili glanced left and right at the men behind him.
He asked, "This is where you wanted to invite me?"
The three men behind him nodded and simply said, "Those were our employer's instructions."
Rong Shili's face immediately flushed red. "Bullshit!" he cursed.
The three men stared blankly for a moment, somewhat confused.
Then, Rong Shili tossed a letter at the three of them.
The letter's signature showed it was written by a manager of the Tang Family Trading Firm in the Southern Region. Upon learning that Rong Shili was heading to Shangjing, the manager had ensured he was looked after along the way and had written this letter of recommendation.
"..."
The three men fell silent after reading it.
So, did this mean that even if they had not gone to 'invite' him, Rong Shili would have ended up here anyway?
Damn it, wasn't this just a wasted trip?
"What a coincidence," the shopkeeper said. He let out a light sigh and added, "Old Mister Rong, forgive the offense. We truly did not expect such a coincidence."
"Who is looking for me?" Rong Shili asked.
The shopkeeper shook his head and simply said, "You will know once you go inside."
"Acting all secretive."
Rong Shili waved his hand, then knocked on the door.
"Bang! Bang! Bang!"
He knocked very loudly.
Before long, the steward of the Tang Manor came to open the door.
Seeing the several people at the door who looked as if they came with ill intentions, the steward raised an eyebrow and was just about to call for the guards.
But then Rong Shili shouted loudly, "Who invited me here?! Who in your Tang family invited me here!"
The steward was just about to tell him to keep his voice down, when his young lady's voice unexpectedly rang out from behind him.
"I am the one who invited Mister Rong here."
The steward hurriedly stepped aside and bowed. "Miss."
Tang Yuerong looked at Rong Shili. Despite his advanced age, his constitution was not weak. Just like in the rumors, his cold eyes made people feel quite uncomfortable when looked upon.
"Who are you in the Tang Manor, girl?" Rong Shili asked.
The men behind Rong Shili exchanged glances, and the shopkeeper stepped forward. "Miss Tang, we have brought him. We will be taking our leave now."
Tang Yuerong nodded and thanked them for their trouble.
She did not answer Rong Shili's question, but merely told the steward, "Steward, invite Mister Rong inside and prepare tea."
Rong Shili shot her a look, but he did not get angry over it.
Before long, he was invited into a tearoom.
Tang Yuerong dismissed the servants, then fixed her gaze on Rong Shili.
Before she could speak, Rong Shili spoke up.
"I heard that the new head of the Tang Family Trading Firm is the young lady of the Tang family. From the looks of it, that must be you."
He immediately followed with a question.
"I wonder, did your father ever mention a certain person to you? A man with the surname Chen, called Chen Changsheng."
Tang Yuerong's train of thought paused upon hearing this.
She took a sip of her tea and frowned, asking, "What is your connection to this man?"
Rong Shili simply smiled. "Years ago, he was the one who rescued me, and he also passed down the skills I have today."
For a moment, Tang Yuerong could not tell whether Rong Shili was telling the truth or a lie.
But she still gave her answer: "He is my uncle."
Rong Shili raised an eyebrow, asking, "Truly?"
"Truly!"
