Immortal Travel of Longevity

Chapter 1063: The Long Road Ahead

The account book Rong Shili produced was absolutely flawless.

Several Old Shopkeepers sat together and studied it for an entire day without finding a single flaw.

Rong Shili took a bite of watermelon and said, "See? At least until now, I've never met anyone better at bookkeeping than me."

"But I should also remind you of one thing. You'd best find a chance to put this ledger back. As the saying goes, there is always someone better, and there is a sky beyond the sky. If his majesty's people come looking, there's no telling how many will scrutinize it."

"Senior is right. We'll have someone go right away."

Rong Shili let out a burp. Perhaps he had eaten too much watermelon, because his stomach was feeling a bit uncomfortable.

"Ah..."

Rong Shili breathed, muttering, "I really am getting old."

He sighed softly. In his early years, he could eat an entire watermelon by himself, but now he couldn't even finish half of one.

"What brings the proprietor here?" Rong Shili asked.

Tang Yuerong sat down and smiled. "I just came to chat, old sir."

"About business?"

"Just idle chatter."

A servant brought them tea.

Tang Yuerong took a sip before speaking. "Old sir, you mentioned that you and my uncle are old acquaintances. I wonder if you could tell me about what happened between you and Uncle Chen back then."

Rong Shili paused and murmured, "That..."

"That's quite a long story."

The years rolled backward as he started the tale from the very beginning.

Light gleamed in Tang Yuerong's eyes. She found these experiences bizarre and wondrous, and through his words, Uncle Chen's image slowly grew much clearer.

At first, Tang Yuerong had slightly doubted Rong Shili's words, but hearing him speak of these events now, she believed him completely.

...

Qingshan City was somewhat peaceful now.

The people were no longer in the state of panic they had been in before.

Chuanfeng Alley had been completely empty for the past two years, without a single soul in sight.

Since Tang Yuerong had not received any news, she dispatched someone to deliver a letter to Chuanfeng Alley. She likely guessed he might no longer be there, so she also instructed the messenger to ask Shopkeeper Liu of Qingshan City for information.

Unexpectedly, the messenger was stopped the moment he arrived at Chuanfeng Alley.

"Who are you?"

The messenger froze and looked back, only to see a figure draped in a fox-fur cloak standing atop the enclosing wall, staring down at him.

The messenger paused, then cupped his hands in greeting. "Brother, I mean no harm. I was merely entrusted to deliver a letter here. Do you happen to know where the master of this place has gone?"

The figure leaped down lightly from the wall.

He inspected the man in front of him and asked, "Is it for the person who lives here?"

The messenger nodded.

The man in the fox-fur cloak nodded slightly. "Give it to me. I'll pass it on for you when the time comes."

The messenger smiled but shook his head. "That's against the rules, so I'll pass. At worst, I'll just come back next time."

He had thought this person would attack him over the refusal, as he had sensed right away that the man's intentions were not good.

To his surprise, the man in the fox-fur cloak thought it over and simply said, "Makes sense. Just don't sneak into this courtyard next time. It wouldn't be good to be mistaken for a thief and beaten to death."

The messenger's heart skipped a beat, and he smiled apologetically. "It was my mistake. Pardon my intrusion."

"Mm."

The messenger bid farewell, then vaulted over the wall and left Chuanfeng Alley.

Yan Nantian watched the direction the man had gone.

He stroked his chin, pondering for a moment before calling out, "Yaoye, follow this person. Let me know if there's any news."

A silhouette quietly appeared. After acknowledging the order, the figure vanished from the spot like a phantom.

Yan Nantian also returned to the neighboring courtyard.

Tucking his fox-fur cloak tighter around himself, he lay down in the rocking chair and gazed up at the stars.

Chuanfeng Alley truly was peaceful.

He actually liked it here quite a bit.

...

The messenger followed the proprietor's instructions and sought out Shopkeeper Liu.

That night, Shopkeeper Liu received the messenger and informed him that Ruyi's family and Master Jin San had gone to the Southern Parts, and were now in Qiuyue Fang.

Upon learning the news, the messenger departed without stopping to rest.

What he didn't know, however, was that ever since he left the city, someone had been tailing him closely, following him all the way toward the Southern Domain.

Halfway there, Yaoye used a bird to send a message back to their lord.

After learning of this, Yan Nantian ordered Yaoye to keep following, and to pay close attention to any news of Ruyi. If they saw her, they were to send a message back immediately.

Yaoye didn't understand why their lord cared so much about this person named Ruyi.

But this was not something they had the right to ask about. It was best not even to guess; they only needed to do their job well.

During the day, Ruyi was practicing the spear with Dong Chiyu.

The sudden arrival of a stranger made Ruyi slightly vigilant.

The messenger glanced at Ruyi, then at Dong Chiyu, and asked, "May I ask which of you is Ruyi the Spear Immortal?"

Ruyi stepped forward, raising an eyebrow. "What is it?"

"My employer ordered me to deliver a letter, and fortunately, I have not failed my mission."

The messenger handed the letter over.

"Your employer is..."

"Tang."

Ruyi paused for a moment before saying, "I understand."

She accepted the letter, and the messenger left right then without another word.

Once Ruyi tore open the envelope and read the contents, she understood completely.

Dong Chiyu asked, "Has Miss Tang run into some kind of trouble?"

"Not exactly," Ruyi replied. "Someone just wants to see me. But it's fine whether I go or not."

She folded the letter and slid it back into the envelope.

"What do you want to do?" Dong Chiyu asked.

Ruyi hesitated. After a moment of thought, she said, "I think I'll go take a look."

Perhaps she had grown a little tired of these peaceful days, leaving a constant, restless itch in her heart.

Ruyi looked back at Dong Chiyu and asked, "What about you? Are you coming with me?"

Dong Chiyu opened her mouth to agree, but hesitated just as the words reached her lips. Instead, she said, "I won't go. I'll stay here and keep my godmother company."

Hearing this, Ruyi began to waver again.

Seeing her like this, Dong Chiyu understood her dilemma and said, "If you want to go, just go. You don't need to worry about anything. Just remember to come back early."

Ruyi pursed her lips and gave a soft "Mm."

Early the next morning, Ruyi rode off on a Swift Horse.

The blood that had lain calm in her veins for so long seemed to burn hot the moment she mounted the horse.

She still couldn't deny it—she was someone who just couldn't sit still.

The road to Shangjing was very long.

But that didn't matter.

She had traveled thousands of miles; a little extra distance made no difference.

At most, it was just walking an old path once more.

Yet she still looked forward to it. She wasn't anticipating who she might meet in Shangjing, but rather what she might encounter along the way. Every journey was different, filled with different people and different sights.

The sun slanted westward, casting its lingering glow.

Carrying that glorious young woman down the official road, the horse stepped once again onto that long, endless path ahead.
