Passing through Qingshan City, Ruyi wanted to go back and take a look.
She wanted to check on the house. It had been unoccupied for too long; a little sweeping wouldn't hurt.
"Hyah!"
Entering Qingshan City, she rode straight back to Chuanfeng Alley.
The alley remained as quiet as ever.
Ruyi returned to her own courtyard, but froze the moment she stepped through the door.
She looked at the front steps. They were cleaner than when she had lived there. The courtyard itself was the same—not a single fallen leaf in sight, the plants pruned with immaculate care.
Stunned, Ruyi ran back out and darted to the gate of the neighboring courtyard.
"Bang! Bang! Bang!"
Ruyi pounded on the door with all her might, her heart swelling with anticipation.
She clearly heard footsteps approaching from the other side.
"Clack..."
As the door was pulled open from within, Ruyi looked up, brimming with hope.
But when she saw the person standing there, her brow furrowed.
"Who are you?"
Her tone was laced with anger; she looked ready to strike at the slightest provocation.
Yan Nantian paused.
He didn't speak, his gaze simply sweeping over the woman before him.
She had aged quite a bit...
There were wrinkles at the corners of her eyes.
But that made sense. So many years had passed, after all.
"I asked you a question!" Ruyi snapped coldly. "Who are you? Why are you here?"
Yan Nantian hesitated, then said, "This prin—I am..."
"Jingnan. I am staying here temporarily."
"Staying here temporarily?" Ruyi sneered. "Who gave you permission to stay here? Did the owner of this house agree to it?"
Yan Nantian paused and asked, "Are you perhaps the owner, miss?"
Ruyi crossed her arms. "This is my uncle's house. You! Get out! Right now!"
Yan Nantian was taken aback. Hidden in the shadows, Yaoye was infuriated; in all these years, The Prince had never been so thoroughly scolded.
Unexpectedly, Yan Nantian pressed a hand down, gesturing for them not to act.
Seeing this, Yaoye could only hold back.
Yan Nantian coughed lightly and said, "If there is a problem, let's sit down inside and talk it over."
Ruyi replied with a single, icy word.
"Scram!"
Yan Nantian hadn't expected their reunion to play out like this. Amused and exasperated, he chose not to argue.
"Miss, finding another place takes time, and moving out requires some effort. Could you perhaps give me a two-day grace period?"
"Are you going to get lost or not?"
At a loss for words, Yan Nantian gave a wry smile. "Miss, could you listen to me first—"
"I don't want to reason with you. You think you can just squat here and steal someone's home because the owner is away? And now you want to reason? Where do you get the nerve?"
Ruyi glared at him coldly. "If you didn't look like such a sickly mess, I would have already kicked you half to death. Did you really think you'd get the chance to stand here and argue with me?"
Seeing this, Yan Nantian let out a long sigh and uttered a single sentence.
"I'm leaving right now!"
"Get lost!"
Ruyi grabbed him and hauled him straight out of the courtyard.
Once back inside, Ruyi looked around in all directions, terrified that something might be broken or missing. If anything was, she truly would kill that sickly man in a fit of rage.
Yan Nantian sighed heavily. Through the open gate, he watched the woman frantically inspecting the courtyard.
He had absolutely no idea what this place meant to Ruyi, nor why she was reacting so intensely.
Wasn't her home next door?
Even if it was her uncle's courtyard, she shouldn't be so frantic that she was ready to murder someone over it.
Seeing that none of the courtyard's items or furnishings had been damaged, Ruyi finally breathed a long sigh of relief.
She looked back, only to find Yan Nantian still standing outside the gate.
"Still haven't gotten lost?"
Yan Nantian said, "You've driven me out, miss. I have nowhere else to go."
Ruyi raised an eyebrow. "Miss this, miss that—I'm old enough to be your mother! Go wherever you want. But if you dare lay another finger on anything in Chuanfeng Alley, I'll take your wretched life."
Despite her ferocious words, Yan Nantian took it in stride. He was slightly surprised, but it also felt perfectly reasonable; this was exactly what her temperament should be.
Yan Nantian exhaled and asked, "Could you listen to me for just a moment? Actually... the courtyards and houses in Chuanfeng Alley are now the property of the Local Government. I didn't steal anyone's home, as you claim. I spent silver taels to buy this courtyard. I have the House Deed. If you don't believe me, I can show you."
Ruyi paused, frowning. "What do you mean?"
Yan Nantian said, "The House Deed is under the bed in the main room. You can go fetch it and see for yourself. It bears the seal of the Local Government, as well as my signature and fingerprint."
Ruyi's eyes darted between him and the house. After a moment of hesitation, she went into the room.
Sure enough, she found the House Deed.
And it did indeed have the name "Jingnan" on it.
Staring at the House Deed, Ruyi fell deep in thought.
In that case...
She really had misunderstood the man.
"Why didn't you say so earlier?"
Yan Nantian said helplessly, "The moment you arrived, you cursed me out as if you were going to murder me. How could I dare say anything more?"
Gripping the House Deed, Ruyi seemed a little embarrassed.
She cleared her throat. "I wrongly blamed you. So... um..."
Yan Nantian blinked. "Can I go back to my house now?"
"No!"
Ruyi blocked the doorway.
"Why not?" Yan Nantian asked.
Ruyi looked around and said, "Look at it this way. However many silver taels you spent, I'll buy it back at cost. Do me a favor and bear with the inconvenience."
Yan Nantian shook his head. "I want to live here myself. This house is the best, and it's quiet."
"Hey now, let's talk about it. Come on..."
Ruyi decided to try a softer approach, politely trying to coax Yan Nantian into yielding.
"Listen, this courtyard belongs to my uncle. He never sold it to anyone. As soon as Prince Yu got here, he seized all these properties for the Local Government, and I don't even know where to go to argue about it. You ended up taking an unfair loss, too. Wouldn't it be better to just settle things this way and avoid any trouble?"
"You are mistaken, miss. The House Deed is in my hands, which makes this house mine. And I truly do not wish to sell it."
"Hey, why are you so stubborn? Just tell me—how many silver taels do you want? I have plenty of silver taels. Name your price."
"I am not lacking in silver taels."
Yan Nantian found the conversation highly amusing. Watching her expression grow darker and darker, he was thoroughly entertained.
"Is that so? Look, about this house..."
"Not selling."
"Listen to me, this..."
"I really am not selling."
Seeing that he was impervious to reason, Ruyi simply stopped talking.
She slapped her palm down and suddenly stood up.
"Damn it! You really are impossible to talk to!"
Ruyi cursed, then snapped, "Let me tell you! I don't care if you want to sell or not. Today, you're selling whether you like it or not, or else I'll run you through with a spear!"
"Speak!"
