Chen Changsheng found Zhao Yuqing's biting mockery exactly as expected.
Zhao Yuqing had always been an eccentric man. Sometimes, his actions completely defied logic.
He constantly claimed he wanted nothing to do with him, yet he had gone out of his way to help during the incident at Yun Manor. Later, when the spirit cage shattered, he made a trip specifically to retrieve the Gourd and the Taiqing Sword.
Yet whenever they met face-to-face, Zhao Yuqing still looked at him like a sworn enemy.
It made absolutely no sense.
Chen Changsheng sighed softly and asked in a casual tone, "Tell me, why do you always say one thing and do another?"
Zhao Yuqing shot him a sideways glance. "If you have no actual business here, get lost. Stop disturbing my peace."
"I'm not leaving."
"If you don't, I'll kill you."
"Chop right here. Make it accurate."
Zhao Yuqing's lip twitched. Seeing Chen Changsheng's smug expression only stoked the fire in his chest.
The man was becoming more shameless by the day.
He was almost as bad as he had been right after he went mad.
Chen Changsheng knew he wouldn't get a straight answer, but he remained deeply curious about Zhao Yuqing all the same.
Zhao Yuqing was entirely out of place in this vast Cultivation World. Everyone knew of him, but no one truly knew him.
Back when Zhao Yuqing had intercepted him by the Sheng River, Chen Changsheng had finally sensed a flicker of the seven emotions and six desires from him. He was not, after all, some detached, ascetic Supreme Immortal entirely removed from mortal concerns.
"I have no interest in chatting with you," Zhao Yuqing said.
With that, he turned to head back to Yunfu Mountain.
Chen Changsheng watched him and said, "Look at you. This island is completely empty. Not a single mountain spirit or wild demon in sight—they all hide far away from you. Even cultivators don't dare approach this place. It's rare for This Chen to come find you for a chat, yet you avoid me like the plague. You've stayed on this mountain for who knows how many years. Don't you ever get bored?"
Zhao Yuqing did not even turn his head. "I am not like you, dreaming only of roaming freely through the Mortal World. A cultivator must calm their heart. If one cannot even endure a little peace and quiet, they should give up on Cultivation."
Chen Changsheng felt he made a fair point.
He watched as Zhao Yuqing leapt into the air, returning to the floating peak of Yunfu Mountain.
Chen Changsheng shook his head helplessly and muttered, "I haven't exactly seen your heart at peace, either."
With that, he rose and walked away.
High up on Yunfu Mountain, Zhao Yuqing looked down.
He seemed to have heard Chen Changsheng's muttered remark.
His expression did not change, but the corner of his eye gave a faint twitch.
Chen Changsheng was not wrong.
If his heart were truly at peace, if he had truly let go of everything, he would never have made that trip to Qiuyue Fang. Nor would he have shown up later to save the old mountain lord.
Zhao Yuqing turned his head away, no longer watching.
Still, the thought of today's heavenly thunder left him feeling rather irritated. With nowhere to vent his frustration, he simply swung his sword. He had no idea which island would suffer the disaster of that strike.
Once, the waters surrounding the immortal island of Yunfu Mountain had been dotted with many other scattered immortal islands. Over the years, however, that demon had sunk them one by one with stray sword strikes. That was why no other Immortal Mountain could be seen within a radius of several hundred li.
...
Chen Changsheng always maintained a skeptical attitude toward certain matters.
He had gotten his answer from Zhao Yuqing.
The Nanyuan he had seen was indeed the exact same Nanyuan from the past.
But the way Chen Changsheng saw it, this place might have been rebuilt later—perhaps by Yu Xuan, or perhaps by his past self. Either way, the original Nanyuan had definitely been located here; it had simply sunk, that was all...
The places lying beneath both the Gate of Life and the Gate of Death were Nanyuan.
Chen Changsheng had inspected both gates, one by one.
Yet no matter what, he could not find a single trace.
"Was the Evil Phoenix really just talking nonsense?"
Chen Changsheng thought this, but then shook his head. At the very least, he had not been able to tell that the Evil Phoenix was lying.
Then could it be...
The head had already been taken away?
That possibility was quite high.
"If that is the case, then there is no rush."
The trail had gone cold. Stumbling around blindly like a headless fly would not yield any results; he was better off properly focusing on his cultivation.
And so, as the sun and moon alternated, Chen Changsheng sat cross-legged above the Desolate Sea. Watching the moon set and the sun rise, he gathered the Yin-Yang Qi. Thread by thread, it fell into his Dantian, seeping into his limbs and bones, and flowing through his internal organs.
Beneath him sat the Supreme Pivot, one yin and one yang, mutually harmonizing with each other.
"Hmm?"
One day, Chen Changsheng suddenly opened his eyes.
"Karma?"
He suddenly saw a thread of karmic cause and effect sweeping toward him.
It seemed to be heading straight for him.
Chen Changsheng stood up. With a raise of his hand, the karma fell into his palm.
Chen Changsheng glanced down at it, then pinched his fingers in calculation, wanting to see exactly what had caused this karma.
"Zisu..."
Chen Changsheng froze. He had not expected such a thing to happen. That obedient girl from back then was actually now trapped by an inner demon. In her daze, who knew how many people had lost their lives because of it.
"Truly a troubled time."
Chen Changsheng sighed softly, then rose and departed on his sword.
What that girl was doing was far from ordinary. Methods like blood sacrifices to summon souls were the handiwork of demonic cultivators. He had no idea where she had learned them.
...
Atop Heavenly Mountain, the pure white snow stretched endlessly.
Howling wind and driving snow completely obscured the view of the summit.
Layers of clouds and mist seemed to isolate the heavens from the earth below, carrying a touch of mystery.
At the summit of Heavenly Mountain stood an altar.
Beside the altar lay a half-mask. Painted upon it was the vibrant face of The Opera Actor, its meaning entirely unclear.
Standing before the altar was a figure clad in a long Purple Robe.
Zisu fell to her knees and offered a bow toward the mask beside the altar.
After gazing at it for a moment, she turned to head down the mountain.
At the foot of the mountain lay a small country of about several hundred thousand people named Shengxue. Thousands of years ago, this place had been nothing more than a tiny tribe. Through subsequent growth and political struggle, it had finally become today's Shengxue Kingdom.
The ruler of the Shengxue Kingdom was a woman. This place honored the matrilineal line; because their population had always been sparse, women had become those of exalted status.
Seeing the woman in the Purple Robe drifting down from the sky, the ruler hastily bowed in respect and called out, "Lord State Preceptor."
Zisu gave a slight nod, offering only a faint glance.
The luxuriously dressed ruler of the Shengxue Kingdom, whose temples were spotted with white, spoke up. "Their traitorous hearts refuse to die; they are intent on rebellion. I hope the State Preceptor will punish these exceedingly wicked people."
The Shengxue Kingdom was no longer as underpopulated as it once had been. Matrilineal supremacy was inherently unjust, and many believed such a system should have ceased to exist long ago. This had led to the brewing rebellion.
Zisu paused, then spoke softly. "I have two Elixir Pills. Dissolve the first in water and drink it; it will grant immediate courage, allowing one to fight ten, but it will disrupt the mind. The other is an antidote, capable of curing that mental disorder."
The ruler felt deeply grateful upon hearing this and hastily bowed.
"Thank you, State Preceptor!"
