The little man's face was blank as he wandered the Mortal World, oblivious to his surroundings.

Anyone larger than him would show fear at the sight of him, which quickly gave way to curiosity, and then they would toy with him. He found this deeply uncomfortable, so in the days that followed, he made a point to hide from people entirely.

But this also meant he had no way to find his bearings; demons were rare, making it difficult to ask for directions.

One day, he passed by a lotus pond brimming with Spiritual Energy.

He couldn't help but stop and gaze at it for a long time.

Then a voice snapped him out of his daze.

"Hey! Kid!!"

The little man froze and looked over.

He saw a red fish leap out of the lotus pond, transforming in the blink of an eye into a little girl dressed in red.

The little man quickly recovered his wits and hastily cupped his hands. "I wandered in by mistake and meant no offense. I hope the Demon King will quell her anger."

Yu Hongjin was taken aback, but then she asked, "Why do you have that person's scent on you?"

The little man stared up at her in bewilderment.

Yu Hongjin stepped forward, plucking him up to hold him in the palm of her hand.

The little man looked at her in confusion before a sudden realization dawned on him. "Do you... know me?"

"Huh?"

Yu Hongjin paused, not quite understanding.

She inspected him from all angles. He was incredibly weak; it seemed a single puff of breath would blow him away and kill him.

"So you're a red bean..."

Yu Hongjin realized in a flash. "You really are unusual. To think even a red bean could become a spirit."

The little man asked in confusion, "Red bean?"

Yu Hongjin proceeded to explain it to him.

The little man suddenly understood. "So I'm a red bean!" he said joyfully. "A red bean!"

Right as he was getting excited, Yu Hongjin raised a hand and flicked him on the head.

"What are you so excited about?"

"I..."

He only felt joy welling in his heart, but he couldn't quite put it into words.

Yu Hongjin pursed her lips. "What's your name?"

The little man looked blank and shook his head.

"I don't have a name."

"No name?"

"Right."

"Huh..."

Yu Hongjin thought for a moment, recalling her own early years. She hadn't had a name back then, either; Sister Yun had been the one to give her one.

Yu Hongjin snapped back to the present and hastily shook her head.

Where had her thoughts drifted off to? She remembered feeling Chen Changsheng's aura on this little guy.

"Let me take a closer look at you."

There was nothing wrong with his body, so the issue definitely lay with his divine sense.

Yu Hongjin sent her divine sense into the little man's Sea of Consciousness.

But she immediately froze.

Inside, she saw a sliver of divine sense sitting in meditation and cultivating within his Sea of Consciousness.

She would recognize that person even if he were reduced to ash!

"You with the surname Chen! It really is you!"

The meditating Chen Changsheng opened his eyes, looking at Yu Hongjin with a blank expression.

"Who are you?"

Yu Hongjin was taken aback by the question.

Seeing her reaction, 'Chen Changsheng' realized what was going on. "I am a sliver of divine sense separated from the master. Many of his memories are not with me. If I have offended you, please do not take it to heart."

Yu Hongjin understood, and she proceeded to question the 'Chen Changsheng' in front of her.

'Chen Changsheng' explained why he had come to the Mortal World, as well as the matter concerning the little man.

Hearing this, Yu Hongjin curled her lip. "He really is impossibly busy."

As she spoke, she grew somewhat displeased.

She was likely recalling the early years when Sister Yun had waited so bitterly, while that man surnamed Chen was always occupied and rarely ever returned.

"Alright, alright, I get it."

'Chen Changsheng' said, "If you are free, miss, could you take him to finish my incomplete tasks? That way, I can return and report back to the master."

"The master, huh..." Yu Hongjin laughed, then said, "Yeah, yeah, I know. Let's just go with that."

"Many thanks."

'Chen Changsheng' let out a breath of relief, and Yu Hongjin withdrew from the Sea of Consciousness.

The little man snapped out of his daze and looked at Yu Hongjin. "Were you... just in my head?"

Yu Hongjin patted his head. "It's nothing, don't worry about it. However, you have a name from now on. You'll take my surname. My surname is Yu, and my name is Yu Hongjin. You will be called Yu Hongdou. Got it?"

The little man stared blankly, taking quite a while to recover.

"I... I have a name?"

"Right."

"My name is Yu Hongdou?"

"Right!"

"My name is Yu Hongdou!"

"Mhm."

"I have a name!!"

Yu Hongjin immediately flicked him on the forehead.

The little man rubbed his head and asked in confusion, "Why did you hit me?"

"No wailing and howling!"

"I wasn't."

"Yu Hongdou!"

"Yeah?"

Yu Hongjin immediately corrected him. "No, when I call you, you have to say 'Here.' For example, if I call 'Yu Hongdou,' you must stand up straight right away and answer 'Here.' Got it?"

Yu Hongdou nodded woodenly to show he understood.

"Let's give it a try."

"Yu Hongdou!!"

The little man in Yu Hongjin's palm instantly stood up straight and answered.

"Here!"

Yu Hongjin nodded in satisfaction and laughed. "The child is teachable!"

Yu Hongdou looked at her and called out, "Yu Hongjin."

Yu Hongjin blinked down at him. "What is it?"

"Why didn't you say 'Here'?"

"..."

Yu Hongjin now had a little man by her side and a few more tasks on her plate.

Come to think of it, she hadn't left this place in a very long time.

Before leaving, she went to the ancestral hall of the Tang Manor to offer incense to Sister Yun, telling her that she wanted to go out for a walk.

Yu Hongdou, meanwhile, was left outside and barred from entering.

"Don't worry, Sister Yun. I'll come back to see you in a while."

"Hongjin is leaving now!"

Just like that, Yu Hongjin left Oulianfang with the little man.

There weren't many places to go, and she would eventually be able to visit them all, one by one.

She also wanted to see what the world had become.

First, she took Yu Hongdou to pay his respects at a City God Temple. This was the task 'Chen Changsheng' had entrusted to her.

"Why are we coming here to pay our respects?"

"Because you need to pay your respects."

"Huh?"

Yu Hongjin said, "Let me explain it this way. You were born with karma. If not for this karma, you might not have become a spirit, and the current you wouldn't exist. Even if this matter doesn't have much to do with you now, the karma remains, and you ought to understand these unfinished matters."

Yu Hongdou half-understood, nodding woodenly.

"The person who granted you life entrusted you with a few tasks. This matter concerns a person named Ruyi. She is that person's niece. You must take his place and visit various demons, ghosts, deities, and extraordinary individuals, asking them to look after his niece. Do you understand?"

"Mhm..."

Yu Hongdou's answer was ambiguous.

"As long as you understand!" Yu Hongjin nodded.

"..."

Yu Hongdou looked troubled. He didn't understand how Yu Hongjin could possibly tell that he had understood.

But it didn't matter.

He had caught bits and pieces of it, however. This seemed to be something he was supposed to do anyway.

Since it was something he was supposed to do, he would do it.
