Immortal Travel of Longevity

Chapter 1138: Must Not Be Reckless

On the other side of the cell block, Xu Ye and his men were restless.

Someone had died. Worse, the war had just ended. As veterans fresh from the battlefield, they were all decorated soldiers. The murder of a recognized hero was no trivial matter.

Xu Ye walked over to the bars of his cell.

"You there, Chen."

In the opposite cell.

Chen Changsheng and the Old Sword Cultivator both turned their gazes to Chen Bin.

Chen Bin slowly raised his head. Snapping back to reality, he let out a cold sneer. "Xu Ye, just wait to pay with your life! I'll make you pay in blood for my brother!"

Xu Ye's expression froze. "I wasn't the one who wielded the knife!"

Chen Bin suddenly grew agitated. Rushing to the cell bars, he slapped the thick wooden posts and roared, "Do you dare say Old Zhang's death has nothing to do with you?!"

His shouting drew the attention of the jailers.

"What's with the noise? What are you shouting about?!"

"Settle down, all of you!"

The jailer glared at them and barked a few more reprimands, finally forcing Xu Ye and Chen Bin to settle down.

Chen Bin sat back down, tilting his head back to look at the ceiling.

He let out a long breath, as if trying to exhale the heavy knot in his chest.

The Old Sword Cultivator walked over and sat beside him. "Brother, you must restrain your grief. Vengeance will be served. This bright and just world will still deliver justice."

Chen Bin let out another breath and gave a slight nod. "We had no intention of dragging you all into this. Once we're out, I will definitely report to Shangguan and have you released as soon as possible. As for the shopkeeper's compensation, I'll do everything in my power to secure it for you."

Hearing this, the shopkeeper's eyes instantly lit up. "Sir, is that true?"

Chen Bin sighed softly. "We caused this mess to begin with. We shouldn't implicate the innocent. Naturally, it's true."

The Old Sword Cultivator leaned forward and grasped Chen Bin's hand. "Brother Chen, you are truly a good man. If not for you, we wouldn't know what to do."

Unaccustomed to such enthusiasm, Chen Bin pulled his hand back. "It's only right..."

His two remaining brothers-in-arms sat to the side with their heads bowed in silence. Their eyes were filled with sorrow.

"Thinking of Old Zhang... all the way here, he was always protecting us. And now..."

"Sigh..."

"Boss, we absolutely have to avenge Old Zhang!"

Chen Bin nodded. "We will. Even if Xu Ye pulls off a miracle to keep his life, I will still kill him. I'll make him pay for Old Zhang!"

"Yeah!"

The men wore expressions of bitter resentment, their fists clenched tight.

Not long after, guards arrived and took Xu Ye and Chen Bin away for interrogation.

Enemies were bound to see red when they met. Chen Bin's gaze constantly brimmed with a killing intent that made Xu Ye's heart tremble.

Xu Ye couldn't help but look away, avoiding any exchange of words with Chen Bin.

The cell finally fell completely quiet.

Chen Changsheng stretched his limbs. He turned to the man beside him and asked, "If Xu Ye really manages to escape a calamity, what will you all do?"

The man froze for a moment. "In this bright and just world, he killed a man, so he should pay with his life!"

Chen Changsheng shook his head. "Not necessarily. Xu Ye caused trouble while drunk, but he only took the lead. If he argues his case well, and considering they all hold military merit, Shangguan will likely only convict him of instigation. After all, he wasn't the one who committed the murder."

Hearing this, the man clenched his fists. He turned his head and said viciously, "Then it'll be just like Big Brother Chen said. If they won't convict him, we'll wield the knives ourselves!"

The Old Sword Cultivator interjected, "Ah, youth is just too hot-headed. If you ask me, this matter still requires some careful planning. If you just rush up and stab him, you'll find it hard to escape a calamity yourselves. You'll be forced to go on the run, and what would you do then?"

"We..."

"We'll just follow Big Brother Chen."

Chen Changsheng noted, "Your Big Brother Chen, mm... he certainly is a loyal man."

"Big Brother Chen is the most loyal of all. He'd lay down his life for us."

"Along this journey, if it weren't for him, we wouldn't be where we are today. He even saved my life back in the day. Anyway, wherever Big Brother Chen goes, we go."

Chen Changsheng murmured, "That truly is a life-and-death bond."

The Old Sword Cultivator shook his head. "I don't think you should count on it. Since your Big Brother Chen is so loyal, he likely has no intention of letting you take that risk. He'll do it himself."

The man's face twisted with indignation. "What am I afraid of? The moment they let me out, I'd dare to kill that bastard Xu right on the street!"

The Old Sword Cultivator shushed him. "You'd best keep your voice down."

Only then did the cell quiet down again.

The men lowered their heads. Then, they heard Chen Changsheng speak. "It's fine, this will all pass. It is currently the eve of His Majesty's ascension to the throne. Acting up at a time like this will likely alarm His Majesty. When that happens, Xu Ye will not be able to escape his doom."

"Yeah..."

A low murmur of agreement drifted through the cell, followed by a heavy silence.

The Old Sword Cultivator came over and sat beside Chen Changsheng. Tucking his hands into his sleeves, he commented, "They're quite close."

Chen Changsheng nodded. "It's a rare sight these days. Brothers willing to bleed for one another... After all, they did fight their way through life-and-death battles together."

The Old Sword Cultivator exhaled softly. "Come to think of it, I had a few brothers in my early years, too. Now, none of them are left."

"How come?"

"They didn't live as long as I have."

Chen Changsheng chuckled. "You're just a thousand-year-old tortoise who outlasted everyone else. What's there to say about that?"

The Old Sword Cultivator scoffed. "Still not as long as you, I'm afraid."

Chen Changsheng shook his head and offered, "Then how about I let you live as long as me?"

The Old Sword Cultivator immediately shook his head in rapid succession, a trace of fear flashing in his eyes.

Brushing the topic aside, the Old Sword Cultivator asked, "When will we be able to get out of here?"

Chen Changsheng replied, "This matter isn't too big, nor is it small. They should be able to close the case in a few hours, and then we'll be released."

"Oh..."

The Old Sword Cultivator murmured in acknowledgement, then added, "I'll take a nap first. Remember to wake me when it's time to go."

Chen Changsheng nodded. "Go ahead and sleep."

Not long after, Chen Bin returned, but Xu Ye had been moved to a different cell.

As soon as Chen Bin walked in, his two brothers-in-arms crowded around him.

"Big Brother Chen, how did it go?"

"How did it go?!"

Chen Bin's eyes were filled with fierce indignation. He slammed his fist into the wall and cursed, "I couldn't take that bastard's miserable life!!"

"Sigh..."

Chen Bin let out a long sigh. He sat down, pounding his fist against the floor in sheer frustration.

"Big Brother Chen, what do we do now...?"

"Shangguan is investigating the murderer. We'll have to stay here for the time being. Once they find the man who wielded the knife, we'll be let out."

"Big Brother Chen, once we get out of here, we'll go after that bastard Xu again!"

Chen Bin's expression tightened. "No. We finally managed to make something of ourselves. You all have elderly parents and young children to feed. We must not act so recklessly, do you understand?!"

Chen Bin scolded sternly.
