Fueled by the alcohol, Xu Ye's temper flared. He grabbed a nearby chopstick holder and hurled it at Chen Bin.
"Smack!"
Chen Bin raised a hand to block it. The holder instantly shattered, scattering chopsticks all over the floor.
The commotion startled the surrounding patrons. No one was in the mood to stick around and watch the spectacle; if a full-blown brawl broke out, innocent bystanders were bound to get hurt.
One by one, they hurried out of the tavern, only daring to watch and listen from a safe distance.
Sitting close by, Chen Changsheng and the Old Sword Cultivator were inevitably caught in the crossfire. A stray chopstick even landed straight in the Old Sword Cultivator's hair, making for quite a comical sight.
"Hey, would you look at that. I haven't even lost my temper yet, and someone's already throwing chopsticks at me?"
The Old Sword Cultivator rolled up his sleeves.
He was just about to step up and play the villain.
"Bang!!"
With a loud thud, Xu Ye's arm was slammed onto the table, shattering it squarely in half.
"Ah!"
Xu Ye cried out in pain, sobering up in an instant. He hurriedly snatched his hand back, clearly feeling that the bones in his wrist were shattered. He could barely move it.
"You bastard, Chen!"
He immediately bellowed at his brothers behind him, "Get him! Beat him to death!"
The Old Sword Cultivator was shoved aside by the surging crowd.
"Hey, I..."
The Old Sword Cultivator looked blankly at Chen Changsheng beside him.
He paused and said, "That kid is cursing at you."
Chen Changsheng smiled helplessly. "What does that have to do with me?"
Compared to a moment ago, the situation had now descended into pure chaos.
Chen Bin and his three or four brothers were surrounded by a dozen men. Trapped in such a cramped space, they were at a severe disadvantage. After only a brief struggle, wails of pain began to ring out.
"Squelch..."
Suddenly, the sickening sound of a Long Saber piercing flesh rang out.
Xu Ye jumped in shock, a cold sweat breaking out across his back. "Stop fighting! Stop fighting!!" he yelled in a panic.
"Everybody fucking stop!!"
But the brawling soldiers were in an uproar. Every one of them was drunk and throwing punches without restraint. In all the chaos, who could even hear his shouts?
We're finished, Xu Ye thought to himself, immediately turning to run.
Looking down, he saw a trail of blood seeping out from under their feet, trampled into a muddy stain by the crowd.
This was Shangjing City. If it was just a fistfight with no casualties, it could be smoothed over. But if knives were drawn, the situation changed entirely. It changed everything.
He knew full well that Your Majesty was currently revising the laws. Committing murder right now was a guaranteed beheading, let alone doing it right at the foot of the throne!
Chen Bin stubbornly fought back from within the mob. He had already taken several harsh blows, but a sudden voice beside him jolted him awake.
"Brother, I've been stabbed!!"
Shocked, Chen Bin roared, "Who drew a knife?!"
His roar startled the men throwing punches and kicks, causing them to freeze.
Only then did they notice the blood pooling around their feet.
Without exception, everyone's heart skipped a beat, and they sobered up completely.
"Fuck! Who was it?!"
"Back up, back up, hurry!"
As the crowd parted, the tragic scene was revealed.
A man lay crumpled on the ground, his clothes covered in footprints from being trampled. Blood poured from his abdomen, dyeing the floor red.
Chen Bin's face drained of color. He threw himself forward. "Old Zhang!!"
"Get out of the way! Get the hell back!"
Xu Ye shoved his way to the center, hauled Chen Bin aside, and frantically checked his breathing.
Xu Ye's heart violently seized. "He's... he's not breathing..."
Chen Bin's eyes instantly went bloodshot. "Xu!! I'll make you pay for my brother's life!!"
With that, he violently shoved Xu Ye to the ground.
The men around Xu Ye were scared stiff. None of them dared to move, let alone step in to stop him.
"Argh!!"
Chen Bin roared, his eyes brimming with bloody rage as he rained punch after punch down onto Xu Ye's head.
But before he could land more than a few blows, voices rang out from outside.
"Make way! Move!"
"The Jinwu Guard is here! Stop fighting! Cease this immediately!"
Chen Bin was forcibly hauled off. He thrashed and struggled with all his might, looking as though he had gone completely mad.
The faces of the surrounding soldiers turned deathly pale.
"Someone died!"
Those words plunged the room into a freezing silence.
"Take them all in! Nobody leaves!"
Chen Changsheng and the Old Sword Cultivator watched the scene unfold. They exchanged a glance, both catching a glint of something unusual in the other's eyes.
They were just about to leave when they were blocked.
"What are you doing?!"
"Arrest them!"
The Old Sword Cultivator stared blankly. "Huh?"
Before he could say another word, the Jinwu Guard moved in and seized him. Chen Changsheng was not spared either.
The Old Sword Cultivator squirmed in their grip. "Hey, easy! Careful with my old bones, hey..."
He turned to look at Chen Changsheng, only to find him wearing a perfectly placid expression. "Aren't you annoyed?"
Chen Changsheng replied, "What's there to be mad about? This isn't This Chen's first time being arrested."
For him, this was a perfectly familiar routine.
The Old Sword Cultivator grumbled, "Well, I have no desire to rot in a cell."
Chen Changsheng blinked. "They feed you in prison. It's quite comfortable. Besides, tagging along with this squad of soldiers won't do us any harm."
The Old Sword Cultivator's expression shifted wildly. He just felt that Chen Changsheng was taking this entirely too calmly.
Was he really that used to it?
It wasn't long before their entire group was hauled off by the Jinwu Guard and thrown into the main prison.
Xu Ye's men were kept separate from Chen Bin's group. Since Chen Changsheng and the Old Sword Cultivator were mere bystanders, they, along with the tavern keeper, were locked up with Chen Bin's men.
The tavern keeper looked utterly devastated. He sat with his head bowed, looking as if he had lost all will to live.
"I don't want to live anymore," he whimpered. "I don't want to live..."
"Heavens, why must you treat me like this?!"
The tavern keeper pounded the floor and wept bitterly, cursing the heavens.
After a disaster like this, there was no way he could keep his tavern open. His livelihood was completely ruined; he had nothing left to hope for.
Listening to him wail, the Old Sword Cultivator said, "Hey now, old brother, don't take it too hard. It might actually be a blessing in disguise. The Imperial Court will surely compensate you for the damages. You'll make back everything you lost with interest."
The tavern keeper shook his head with a bitter smile.
"What is it?" the Old Sword Cultivator asked.
The tavern keeper raised his head to look at him. "Where would I get any compensation? Heh... for a small household like mine, ruined is ruined. I have nothing left. Nothing!!"
The Old Sword Cultivator opened his mouth to speak, but suddenly realized the bitter truth of his words.
It was true. Common citizens swept up in matters like this had absolutely no room to fight back. Compensation? Who would even spare him a second glance?
Compared to the despairing tavern keeper, Chen Bin sat off to the side in unnatural stillness. His head was bowed, his hands hanging limp, and his gaze was unfocused. More than anything, he simply looked heartbroken.
