Yu Hongdou believed he could forge the greatest Treasure Sword in the world.
But reality dealt him a harsh slap in the face.
Every Sword that passed through his hands lacked a certain something. According to Mister Lan, what was missing was qi, and the problem lay with him.
Mister Lan's words were cryptic, and Yu Hongdou didn't fully understand them. The general gist was that his own qi clashed with the sharp qi of the blade, which was why every Sword he crafted fell slightly short.
He had considered giving up, but Mister Lan told him, "My affinity is wood, just like yours. It naturally clashes with fire and metal. So why do the Swords I forge have no obvious flaws?"
Those words reignited Yu Hongdou's confidence.
He spent years hammering away, striving to comprehend the secret within.
Just as he sat down to rest, Mister Lan walked in.
"Little Hongdou, someone is here to see you."
Lan Ting replied, "It is the Fox Lord of Yuanshan."
Yu Hongdou froze. He had heard Mister Lan mention Yuanshan before and knew a little about it.
Still, he felt entirely bewildered. He didn't even know this senior figure, so why would the Fox Lord come looking for him?
Lan Ting added, "It likely has to do with Mister Chen."
Yu Hongdou's expression shifted slightly. "Is that so..."
If that were the case, it made perfect sense.
He let out a soft sigh and followed Mister Lan outside.
Upon seeing the tiny figure, Su Junhan felt a sense of wonder. On one hand, he marveled at Mister Chen's extraordinary methods; on the other, he realized just how incredibly profound the myriad things of the world truly were. For such a miniature warrior to attain a spirit and develop sentience was a true miracle of creation.
Yu Hongdou looked at the man before him. He bowed in greeting and said, "Greetings, Fox Lord."
Su Junhan nodded. "Focus on your Cultivation. Your great fortune is not far off."
Yu Hongdou was a little bewildered by the remark. Recovering his wits, he nodded and replied, "Thank you for the kind words, Fox Lord. However, I am afraid I must disappoint you. Yu Hongdou is not Mister Chen. Yu Hongdou is simply Yu Hongdou."
Su Junhan chuckled. "I am well aware of that. That is why I haven't come here to make things difficult for you."
Yu Hongdou paused. "Then..."
Su Junhan didn't explain. Instead, he beckoned the little spirit forward.
Yu Hongdou hesitated, glancing back at Mister Lan.
"Go ahead," Mister Lan said.
Yu Hongdou walked up slowly, stopping right in front of Su Junhan.
Su Junhan looked at the tiny figure on the table. Under Yu Hongdou's watchful gaze, the Fox Lord slowly reached out a hand and tapped the center of the spirit's brow.
In the next moment, Su Junhan's Divine Sense flowed straight into Yu Hongdou's Sea of Consciousness.
Yu Hongdou's Sea of Consciousness was not vast. Without any effort at all, Su Junhan located the slumbering Divine Sense.
"It really is Mister Chen's Divine Sense."
Su Junhan murmured, then stepped forward.
He cupped his hands in a respectful bow toward the slumbering presence. "I ask that Mister Chen awaken."
After he spoke, the Divine Sense remained still for a long while.
Suddenly, Yu Hongdou's Sea of Consciousness trembled.
The closed eyes opened, and the presence materialized into the figure of a man in green robes.
The man stepped forward and returned the bow. "This Chen greets the Fox Lord."
Seeing Mister Chen again filled Su Junhan with a deep sense of warmth.
Chen Changsheng asked, "For what matter has the Fox Lord come seeking me?"
Su Junhan quickly explained the entire situation from beginning to end.
Chen Changsheng frowned deeply upon hearing the tale, looking thoroughly astonished.
Su Junhan said, "Therefore, I wanted to ask you, Mister. Where exactly is that dreamscape hidden?"
Chen Changsheng paced back and forth. Finally composing himself, he said, "Please give me a moment to process this, Fox Lord."
Su Junhan nodded.
The Chen Changsheng standing here was only a fragment of Mister Chen's Divine Sense, possessing few of the main body's memories. He was deeply shocked to learn what had happened to his true self. It was no wonder his connection with the main body had been completely severed lately.
A moment later, Chen Changsheng raised his head and looked at Su Junhan. "You want to know where the dreamscape is?"
Su Junhan nodded. "Exactly."
Chen Changsheng said, "There are indeed a few clues within my main body's memories, but I honestly don't know where that place actually is."
Su Junhan paused in surprise. "What do you mean?"
Chen Changsheng shook his head. Rather than explaining further, he simply said, "All I can tell you, Fox Lord, is that the place lies at the intersection of yin and yang, the boundary between life and death."
Su Junhan parted his lips to speak, but stopped. He could sense that the man before him was holding something back; at the very least, he knew why, but it seemed to be a secret that simply could not be spoken aloud.
Su Junhan pressed, "Could you be a bit more specific, Mister?"
Chen Changsheng said, "It is only the boundary between life and death. Even I do not know its exact location."
In his memories, that dreamscape existed strictly within the world after death. It was like a waystation separating life and death.
Chen Changsheng then cupped his hands and said, "Please forgive me, Fox Lord. It isn't that This Chen is intentionally hiding anything from you. It is merely that without permission, some things cannot, and should not, be spoken aloud. If the opportunity arises, it would be best for Mister Chen to explain it to you in person. I am nothing more than a fragment of his Divine Sense... or perhaps, merely a remnant soul..."
Su Junhan composed himself and nodded. "I understand."
Chen Changsheng said, "I sincerely hope you can save Mister Chen. I leave him in your care, Fox Lord."
"You are too polite, Mister."
Su Junhan said no more, and his Divine Sense withdrew from Yu Hongdou's Sea of Consciousness.
In that very instant, Yu Hongdou snapped awake.
His gaze was slightly dazed as he looked around. He looked at the man in front of him, then turned to look at Mister Lan.
Su Junhan cupped his hands toward the little spirit. "Thank you, my young friend."
Yu Hongdou blinked in confusion. "Fox Lord, why... why are you thanking me?"
Su Junhan raised a hand and tapped him lightly. A surge of Spiritual Energy flowed straight through Yu Hongdou's brow and coursed into his limbs and bones.
"A modest token of my gratitude. It is nothing much, but I thank you for your cooperation."
Yu Hongdou stared blankly, simply feeling a comfortable warmth spreading through his body.
"No, no, no, Fox Lord, this is far too precious..."
Before Yu Hongdou could finish, Su Junhan reached out and patted the little spirit's head with a finger. He then turned to Mister Lan and said, "I will not intrude any longer."
Lan Ting nodded. "Take care, Fox Lord."
Su Junhan said to Yu Hongdou, "Focus on your Cultivation."
Yu Hongdou stood frozen, completely bewildered by the whole exchange.
Even after Su Junhan had left, he still hadn't fully recovered his wits, having absolutely no idea what had just happened.
Lan Ting called out to him, "Little Hongdou, wake up. He's already gone."
Yu Hongdou snapped out of his daze. "Mister Lan, what on earth..."
Lan Ting offered a warm smile. "Since you received it, just accept it. A free benefit is a free benefit; you'd be a fool not to take it."
Yu Hongdou hesitated. "Mister, is this really appropriate?"
Lan Ting chuckled. "It's perfectly fine. As the saying goes, 'love the house, love its crow.' You bear Mister Chen's shadow, so accepting a little benefit is nothing."
