Since ancient times, those who struggled against the heavens never met a good end.

Yet such people had always appeared in the long river of history. These were figures left unrecorded in historical texts and scholars' notes; the moment they stepped onto this path, they were destined to scatter like smoke.

Manyue could no longer recall just how many people in her memory had defied the mandate of heaven like this. But Chen Changsheng alone gave her a different feeling.

For two thousand years, his destiny had been a struggle against the Heavenly Dao.

Then came his passage into rebirth and Reincarnation. He walked the Corpse Dao, entered the demonic path, and bathed the entire Cultivation World in blood, unleashing a wave of unimaginable turmoil across heaven and earth.

Back then, fearing neither heaven nor earth, he had marched steadily forward, absolute in his resolve to contend with the heavens.

But in the end, he failed.

He suffered a complete defeat.

To preserve his life, he abandoned his physical body, usurped the laws of the Yellow Springs, and hid within them. Thus, he evaded the curse. He severed a portion of his soul and sent it into Reincarnation, using this feigned death to deceive the Heavenly Dao.

That was how the present Chen Changsheng came to be.

The journey had been fraught with twists and turns, but fortunately, hope remained. The Demon Sovereign had borrowed a physical body to return to the Mortal World, evading the gaze of the Heavenly Dao. This meant that in the near future, he truly might have a chance to overturn the Heavenly Dao.

For some reason, Manyue had always harbored an inexplicable confidence in this man. Or perhaps she had simply felt for a long time now that this world was overdue for a new master.

At this moment, Chen Changsheng interrupted her thoughts.

"This Chen still has one thing he doesn't understand."

"What is it?"

"Why would Underworld Reincarnation be a futile effort? The only loophole in that curse lies in Reincarnation. By crossing through it, haven't I escaped the curse? Why wouldn't it work?"

Manyue rested her chin in her hand and said flatly, "You two are different. There will always be a few anomalies in this world, and you are not governed by the laws of Reincarnation."

Chen Changsheng frowned. "Why?" he asked.

"When he explained it to me, he intentionally avoided this question. I think he knows the reason. If you get the chance, go ask him yourself."

Chen Changsheng fell silent for a moment before saying, "Thank you."

Manyue picked up her book and resumed reading. "Go recuperate in the Underworld," she said. "Only by staying close to Reincarnation can you evade that curse."

"Mm, alright."

"Remember to wear the mask."

"...Mm."

...

When Chen Changsheng arrived in the Underworld and saw the sight before him, he fell into a daze. In the blink of an eye, several years had passed, and the place had drastically changed. Everything in the Underworld was now complete. Various underworld deputies guarded every location, and across the Sand Sea, countless dead souls hurried toward the Bridge of Naihe.

In such a brief span of years, this realm had achieved true completion.

The souls of the soldiers he had brought from the Mortal World now bore the duties of underworld deputies. Transformed into yin soldiers, they guarded every corner of the Underworld. Everything was perfectly orderly.

Chen Changsheng descended from the sky and walked forward.

After an unknown amount of time, he spotted the illusory, ethereal long bridge in the distance.

The scenery around him grew increasingly dim, as if heralding the crossing of yin and yang.

He stepped into the Main Hall.

There, he saw a woman brewing soup. The dead souls arriving here would each receive a bowl. She was the Underworld's Meng Po; only by drinking this soup could the spirits forget their past and present lives and step into Reincarnation.

But when Chen Changsheng saw the woman's face, his heart jolted.

Sensing his unusual gaze, Meng Po looked up.

"Huh?"

Meng Po blinked. "Demon Sovereign, Demon Sovereign, why are you back? Didn't you go to the Mortal World?" she asked.

Chen Changsheng froze for a moment. Recovering his wits, he replied, "I finished my business, so I came back."

Meng Po was a little puzzled, but she did not overthink it.

"Want some soup?"

Chen Changsheng looked at the incredibly enticing soup and waved his hand. "I'll pass."

He added, "I have other matters to attend to, so I'll be going now."

"Leaving already?"

Meng Po tried to call him back, but the Demon Sovereign vanished in the blink of an eye.

Chen Changsheng immediately sought out Manyue. "What's going on with Meng Po by the Bridge of Naihe?" he asked. "Why is she..."

"You want to ask why she looks so much like Yu Xuan, right?"

"Mm."

Manyue answered, "She is Yu Xuan."

Chen Changsheng's arm trembled slightly. "Didn't you tell me that Yu Xuan bore the karma and fell into Reincarnation?" he asked.

Manyue nodded. "She did. But on the road to the Yellow Springs, someone stopped her."

She stood up and said, "She remembers nothing now. That burden of karma wiped away all her memories the moment she stepped into Reincarnation. Now, she is merely a soul—just a little girl who knows nothing."

"At first, the Demon Sovereign and I discussed sending her into Reincarnation so she could find her next life. But the affairs of the world are impermanent. By sheer accident, we discovered that she is an anomaly, just like you. She was someone who had already broken free of Reincarnation. The Rebirth Scripture doomed her to never reincarnate like an ordinary person. So, we had to find another way. We temporarily let her take up the duties of Meng Po so she wouldn't be too bored."

Chen Changsheng sat down in a daze.

Past memories flashed through his mind, bringing a dull ache to his head.

Rubbing his temples, he let out a breath and said, "Why didn't you give me a heads-up earlier?"

"I forgot."

Manyue cautioned him, "If you care at all, interact with her as little as possible."

Chen Changsheng shook his head. "I almost wish I had never met her."

"Mm."

Chen Changsheng said, "If there's anything else, tell me now."

Manyue thought for a moment before saying, "He left the Demon Sword to you. The Exquisite Demon Pagoda is here as well. You may deal with them as you please. Right now, everything he owned belongs to you. Do you understand what I mean? I suggest you cooperate with us."

"After all, we have the same goal, don't we?"

Chen Changsheng looked at Manyue's serious expression. Pausing for a moment, he said, "I'll think about it."

"Take your time," Manyue said. "We have plenty of days ahead of us, anyway."

Chen Changsheng left Nanyuan and returned to the Underworld.

He found a secluded spot, sat down, and repeatedly turned over recent events in his mind.

From the very beginning, he had been reduced to someone else's game piece.

Everything he had encountered had been arranged in advance.

It was an incredibly unpleasant feeling.

He had resolved to sink into a deep slumber, only for that demon to kick his door open. Such powerlessness over his own fate forced Chen Changsheng to ponder what he should do next.

Should he get involved?

He had to admit that Manyue's words had indeed allowed him to see a glimmer of hope once more.
