Mortal World Township.
A figure in green robes appeared on the riverbank.
"Ugh..."
After sprawling on the ground and dry-heaving a few times, Chen Changsheng finally regained his senses.
He lay there, panting for a while.
Then, he began to feel out this body.
No karma, no cause and effect—only fortune and blessings.
He dragged himself over to the riverbank. In the water's reflection, his facial features were unchanged, though his hair was disheveled. If his clothes were any more tattered, he would look exactly like a beggar.
"Phew..."
After a moment's hesitation, he spoke: "Heaven and earth, edict—sever the river!"
As the words fell, the Dao rhythm of heaven and earth responded.
The riverbed before him suddenly parted, as if cleanly cleaved down the middle by a blade.
He stood up slowly and strode across the river.
The sensation made him deeply nostalgic.
In the past, whenever he issued an edict, heaven and earth had assisted him, granting him the power to summon the wind and rain at will. That had all ended the moment he entered the demonic path. Wielding it again now left him in a slight daze.
He gazed into the distance, thinking to himself, 'Now that things are like this, I can take my time to plan. There's no rush anymore. Hmm...'
He had successfully swapped their places.
He was no longer the previous Chen Changsheng, but the demon lord everyone had once clamored to kill.
But who would be able to tell?
As for Chen Changsheng, let him endure the Heavenly Dao's thunder tribulation in his stead.
...
The Demon Sovereign fled, running for his life.
He could clearly feel that he still hadn't escaped the prying eyes of heaven and earth.
The moment he stopped, the thunder tribulation would strike.
He had no choice but to keep running, searching for a place that could mask him from heaven's mandate.
With this in mind, he rushed straight for the Desolate Sea.
Upon reaching a certain spot, he plunged into the Desolate Sea. He passed through an underwater canyon, swept away the thick mud at its bottom with a wave of his hand, and arrived before the Gate of Life and Death.
"Rumble!"
The thunder tribulation crashed down.
At the very last second, the nearly exhausted Demon Sovereign threw himself into the gate of life.
He gasped for air, his chest heaving wildly.
His arms were entirely numb. Parts of his body had been scorched black by the tribulation, leaving him looking as if he had been burned in a fire—a gruesome sight.
"Cough, cough... ugh..."
He coughed up a mouthful of blood. His internal injuries were severe; only when the true Purple Firmament Divine Lightning fell did he realize it was entirely beyond what a cultivator could endure.
If not for the endless reserves of demonic qi and this formidable body, his soul would have been obliterated long ago.
The Demon Sovereign took a deep breath, then pushed himself up and walked past the gate.
Step by step, he made his way into Nanyuan.
Manyue was sitting in the courtyard, flipping through a book and reading with keen interest.
Noticing someone's arrival, she looked up.
Her gaze settled on him, and she smiled. "I knew it. You wouldn't die that easily."
The Demon Sovereign's expression shifted slightly. He walked over and sat down.
"I have this physical body to thank for that," he said.
Manyue glanced at him and nodded. "That's true. After all, he originally started his cultivation through the Corpse Dao and was known as the Golden Corpse Daoist. It's only natural this physical body is incredibly tough."
She studied the man before her, looking somewhat surprised. "You seem quite calm."
The Demon Sovereign raised his brow slightly. "The wood is already made into a boat. What else can I do? Not to mention, I'm heavily injured right now—nothing but a stray dog without a home. Aside from here, I have nowhere else to go."
Manyue nodded slightly. "A wise perspective."
She set down her book. "Back in Qingshan City, you took me in. Now, I will take you in for a while."
The Demon Sovereign scoffed. "Then I really must thank you."
Manyue parted her lips. "Chen Changsheng, you should have figured it out a long time ago. I am the Heavenly Dao, the most ruthless thing in existence. From the very beginning, you were stepping into a trap."
Chen Changsheng, now in the guise of the Demon Sovereign, looked entirely calm. "Actually, I noticed something was off a long time ago."
Manyue nodded. "Then why didn't you kill me back then?"
Chen Changsheng took a deep breath. "Without you, how could I have perfected the Underworld and Yellow Springs to smoothly step into Reincarnation?"
Manyue said, "So your intent all along was to drag us down as your scapegoats. You really are ruthless."
Chen Changsheng replied, "If I were dealing with friends, This Chen would never do such a thing."
Manyue shook her head. "Is it too late to kick you out now?"
Chen Changsheng let out a breath. "What do you think?"
"Just a joke."
Manyue looked at him. "Stay here. Wait until you've fully recovered before heading out."
Chen Changsheng paused for a moment. "What exactly are you all trying to do?"
Manyue shrugged. "I'm not doing anything; it's about what he wants to do. You'll have to ask him. I don't know much."
Chen Changsheng said, "So you knew all along that the Underworld wouldn't be able to break the curse, didn't you?"
Manyue nodded. "I knew. He tried it a long time ago."
Chen Changsheng froze. "He tried it a long time ago? There was an Underworld before?"
Manyue explained, "Can you really not figure out such a simple truth?"
"What?"
"I am a part of the Heavenly Dao. Which part do you think I am?"
A flash of realization hit Chen Changsheng. "So that's how it is..."
Manyue said, "In this world, I am nothing more than a rule."
Chen Changsheng said, "So you fabricated the matter with Yu Xuan as well?"
Manyue shook her head. "I never lied to you about that."
Chen Changsheng paused before continuing, "Then what is your objective? From the sound of it, you and that demon have entirely different goals. It's just that the process is similar, so you are walking the same path. Am I right?"
"Correct."
Manyue paused, shifting her gaze back to Chen Changsheng. "But knowing won't do you any good. You are already powerless to stop it."
Chen Changsheng rubbed his temples. "Things have already reached this point. What harm is there in speaking plainly?"
Manyue hesitated before answering. "I will only tell you this: your goal and his are the same."
Chen Changsheng was stunned for a moment.
He pondered briefly before replying, "The same?"
"Yes."
"But his actions are somewhat different," he noted.
"They are the same."
Manyue let out a breath. "Eventually, both of you will reach the point of fighting the Heavenly Dao. You still harbor some goodwill toward the Heavenly Dao in your heart, but he is different. He is entirely dead set on changing the heavens and the earth."
"And changing the heavens and the earth will break the curse?"
"Perhaps it can."
Chen Changsheng furrowed his brow. "Is there really no other way?"
Manyue said, "Those were his exact words. I am not you two, so how could I know everything?"
Chen Changsheng parted his lips, let out a soft sigh, and lowered his head.
"Troubled times."
