Recently, many refugees had passed through Yan County.
Fleeing north, they begged along the way. Here in Yan County, no household was greater than the Tang family.
The Tang family had a strong local reputation for charity. During this Tribulation in the Southern Domain, they once again extended a helping hand, setting up porridge stalls for the refugees. Though the relief was modest, it ensured every arrival got a bowl of food.
The refugees had traveled a long way with few offering them aid. This act of kindness warmed their hearts.
In return, they offered their desperate warnings.
"Noble lady of the Tang Manor, flee for your lives! The demons down in the Southern Parts eat people and drink their blood. The entire south has been completely overrun. It won't be long before they reach here!"
Tang Yuerong had heard these words more than once.
Over the past two days of handing out porridge, someone had urged her to run every single day.
She was beginning to consider whether she should leave...
The news had not yet fully spread across the world, but Tang Shijing had already explained the stakes in stark terms. The Demon Race's atrocities in the Southern Domain and the current state of affairs there were far more terrifying than anything the refugees described.
Tang Yuerong looked out over her peaceful, stable surroundings. This was the home where she had lived for decades. To be told to leave now... she simply could not bear to part with it.
But now, she had no choice.
"Butler, go back and pack. It is time for us to leave..."
The servants of the manor moved quickly. In just a single shichen, they had packed everything up.
"The heavens have met with great chaos, and vile demons ravage the nation. The Southern Domain suffers endless disasters, creating countless refugees. Yuerong has no other choice but to ask the ancestors to leave the ancestral hall and temporarily take shelter. Forgive my offense."
Tang Yuerong personally took down the ancestral tablets, gathering them up one by one.
But just as they were about to leave, miserable screams suddenly rang out from outside the ward.
"Demons!! They're here!! They're here!!"
"Run!"
"Ahhhhh!"
Shrieks and agonized cries continuously echoed outside.
Hearing the noise, the butler froze for a moment before urging, "Miss, we need to leave right now!"
Tang Yuerong looked back, seeing that not all the memorial tablets had been packed away yet.
She parted her lips to speak, but helplessly dropped to her knees and bowed once instead.
"Ancestors, please do not blame me."
With that said, she immediately rose to her feet.
"Go! Bring the rations and leave all useless belongings behind!"
Tang Yuerong fled the area just before the demonic chaos fully descended upon them.
There were too many people fleeing; a horse carriage could not move at all. They could only run forward on foot.
They blended into the crowd of refugees, escaping toward the north.
Looking back, it did not take long for the stench of blood to wash over Oulianfang.
The shrieks of demons were incessant as fires broke out everywhere, sending thick smoke billowing into the sky.
Tang Yuerong pressed her lips together. Ultimately, all she could do was sigh.
"Heh!!"
A commoner struggled to escape, but a demon rapidly lunged forward and snatched him up. The villager's screams echoed through the forest, yet there was no one left to hear them. The demon opened its bloody maw, baring sharp teeth, and viciously swallowed the man's entire head in one bite.
Blood sprayed into the air as the screams abruptly ceased.
The demon swallowed the villager's flesh and licked its lips in satisfaction, as if it had just tasted a delicious delicacy.
Demons attacked from all directions, and the sight of them devouring humans could be seen everywhere.
"That's all?"
"Hmph."
A demon snorted coldly and muttered, "I suppose you ran fast enough."
"There's barely any meat to go around here."
The demon looked left and right, searching for its next victim. Hearing something, it stopped in front of a bamboo basket on the side of the street.
"Hm?"
It kicked the basket aside.
Only to reveal a trembling child, who thrust a wooden stick at it.
"Hmph!"
The demon snorted, casually slapping the child aside.
"Ah..."
The child cried out in pain. Under the force of the strike, his small body flew several zhang away. After tumbling across the ground multiple times, only a faint breath remained in him.
The demon licked its lips and walked toward the child.
Reaching out, it pinched the child by the body and lifted him up.
It held the boy high in the air, then tilted its head back.
Its head transformed into a massive snake's head. Baring its fangs, it prepared to swallow the child whole.
"Fuck!"
"You dare attack my home?!"
Suddenly, a voice rang out.
The snake demon paused. Just as it turned its head, a shoe came flying right at it.
It thought it could easily dodge, but in the next moment, the shoe smacked solidly into its face.
"Smack!"
The snake demon immediately stumbled, a welt swelling on its face.
It flew into a rage. Snake scales flickered across its skin as a bloody aura surged wildly.
Yu Hongjin reached out and caught the falling child.
She paused and checked the boy's breathing. Her expression instantly darkened.
He was already beyond saving...
"I was too late..."
She carefully laid the child to the side.
Stepping forward, she picked up the shoe she had thrown and slipped it back onto her foot.
When she looked up again, her eyes were filled with a murderous glare.
"A fish demon?"
The snake demon raised a brow and sneered. "Fish just happens to be my favorite food!"
With that, it stomped forward. The stone slabs of the street shattered into a deep crater, kicking up a cloud of dust.
Yu Hongjin watched the demon rushing toward her.
"You really think your Grand Aunt doesn't know how to fight?!"
Yu Hongjin raised her hand and summoned a Wine Gourd.
Popping the cork, a fiery crest suddenly lit up between her brows.
"Fire!!"
The heavy stench of alcohol permeated the air.
As she swept the gourd forward, a massive fireball surged toward the snake demon.
Startled, the snake demon twisted sideways to dodge. After steadying its footing, it mocked, "A dignified member of the Demon Race, yet you practice the Daoist spells of the Mortal World. You wretched fish demon, what utter treachery!"
"Bullshit!"
Yu Hongjin spat back, "Your Grand Aunt here gained sentience in a thousand-year lotus pond! I'm nothing like you backwater wild demons!"
Saying that, she uncorked the Wine Gourd again.
"Water!"
A torrent of water blasted out from the gourd.
Left with nowhere to dodge, the snake demon was battered by the surging currents, making it impossible to advance.
As it braced against the flood, rage boiled in its heart.
In the blink of an eye, it transformed into its true form.
Now in its true form, the rushing water actually became an advantage.
Yu Hongjin immediately canceled the water spell.
"So it's just a little water snake. And here I was wondering what you could be."
Yu Hongjin put away the gourd as the lotus seal between her brows flared with light.
She raised her hands, rapidly forming hand seals.
"Qingxian Dao Art, Lotus Demon Lock!"
A lotus flower manifested from her brow and shot out along the water. In a mere instant, it trapped the water snake within its petals.
"Bind!"
The snake demon panicked, but it had already plunged headlong into the lotus.
The lotus petals abruptly snapped shut, completely sealing it inside in the blink of an eye.
Yu Hongjin stepped forward, raising her hand to catch the lotus as it floated into her palm.
Inside the closed petals, the struggling little snake could faintly be seen.
"You blasted fish demon! How dare you offend my Hongyuan Tianxia!"
Yu Hongjin scoffed. "Hongyuan Tianxia? Never heard of it. Just stay inside and behave yourself."
