After dealing with the snake demon, Yu Hongjin hurried to the lotus pond outside Oulianfang.
She swept her gaze over the area. Seeing nothing out of the ordinary, she finally relaxed.
She had been born here, sharing countless invisible ties with this lotus pond. Just like an artifact spirit losing its vessel, a spirit without an anchor would struggle to find a place in the world.
After hearing about the demon chaos in the Southern Domain, she had rushed back in a panic, terrified that something had happened to it.
By now, the ward was practically empty—or rather, devoid of the living.
Those who hadn't managed to flee in time were dead.
After she dispatched the snake demon, a few more people fled outward, likely having hidden in the ward earlier.
In mere moments, dozens more ran away.
Yu Hongjin spread her divine sense to probe the area. As expected, no one else was left.
Yu Hongjin muttered.
She then strode toward Tang Manor.
Tang Manor was a mess. Several horse carriages sat abandoned outside, evidently left behind in the rush.
"Looks like my niece has already left."
"That's good."
Yu Hongjin walked into the manor and headed straight for the ancestral hall.
She pushed open its doors and stood outside, looking in.
The spirit tablets were scattered about in disarray. Some had even been taken down, their whereabouts unknown.
They hadn't had time to take them all.
Her gaze immediately found Sister Yun's tablet. It still stood in its place, though tilted slightly askew.
Yu Hongjin walked in and set it straight.
She also offered two sticks of incense.
Once she had tidied the hall, her mind settled a bit more.
"Little fish demon, you know nothing of the mortal world's sinister nature! How could the Human Race ever coexist with our Demon Race?!"
Yu Hongjin raised her hand and struck out with a burst of Magical Power.
The small snake trapped within the Lotus Flower instantly writhed, letting out several shrieks of agony.
"The Demon Race and the Human Race have lived in peace for so many years. If you stray, wicked demons hadn't stirred up trouble, how would things have ever reached this point?"
"You lot really are incredibly stupid, never using your brains. The Imperial Court just issued the decree to eradicate demons. Before anyone could even finish heading south, some demons established Hongyuan Tianxia, popping out of nowhere in secret. Whose handiwork do you think that is? You idiots are being used as pawns and don't even realize it. Utterly foolish."
Yu Hongjin's words were ice-cold.
The snake demon, however, didn't listen to a single word. He roared, "My lord has foresight! He knew the Human Dao harbored ill intentions, which is why he formed this Hongyuan Tianxia to give our Demon Race a place to survive. Otherwise, once those Human Dao cultivators head south, our Demon Race would suffer a devastating blow! How many innocent demons would face calamity? Those cultivators don't distinguish between good and evil—they kill any demon they see! Do I even need to say who is good and who is evil?!"
Yu Hongjin replied calmly, "I am trying to teach you reason, but you want to argue over sides. If you can't understand, that is your own stupidity. I won't say any more. Shut your mouth. When your accomplices arrive, your grandaunt here will take care of them one by one, reuniting your whole family so you can be harmonious and happy."
The snake demon gave a cold snort and fell silent.
As far as he was concerned, how much skill could this little fish demon really have?
If she didn't kill him right now, she was the one who would surely die later.
Yu Hongjin pulled out her Gourd, took a sip of wine, then stepped out of the ancestral hall, carefully closing the doors behind her.
It was only after confronting Daoist Wuwei back then that Yu Hongjin had realized the shortcomings of her own Divine Abilities. Later, after arriving in Qingshan City, she would seek guidance whenever she had the time.
She nearly wore out the threshold of Qingxian Temple. Even Daoist Xuanzhen found her annoying whenever he saw her.
Because of this, she had picked up the gist of Qingxian Temple's Mysterious Gate Daoist arts. She couldn't call herself a master, but she knew how to use them.
It was more than enough to deal with these bottom-tier little demons.
Not to mention, she was inherently a spirit of the Pre-Heaven stage, making it even easier for her to handle these demons.
She strode to the ward entrance and simply sat cross-legged on the path by the lotus pond leading inside.
Dressed entirely in red, she gripped the Wine Gourd in her hand.
She waited there quietly.
"Your grandaunt here wants to see exactly what this Hongyuan Tianxia of yours is capable of!"
A few scattered corpses could be seen along the official road—people who had died while fleeing the disaster.
With demons wreaking havoc, the people were in a state of panic. Everyone in the Southern Domain was fleeing north. Even though it was harvest season, there was nowhere near enough food to feed so many people. Few died of starvation, but it wasn't entirely unheard of.
Or perhaps...
These people hadn't died of starvation at all.
"Has the demon chaos in the Southern Domain already reached this point?"
Yu Hongdou's gaze swept the surroundings, but he couldn't spot a single person. Without exception, the Market Towns and villages were completely empty. Aside from the severed limbs and scattered remains left behind after the demons had feasted, nothing was left.
Lying on a mule behind him, Jing Wuya chewed on a piece of foxtail grass. He cast a sideways glance and said, "This isn't so bad. It's a miracle those demons didn't burn these villages to the ground."
"I wouldn't go that far," Yu Hongdou said. "Maybe those demons intend to move in."
"Move in, my ass," Jing Wuya said. "Given a demon's habits, they prefer living in the mountains. It's hidden enough, and the essence of plants and trees is abundant enough. They don't like staying in a Mortal World Township."
"I see..."
Yu Hongdou was a bit surprised. He said, "But the Demon Market..."
"The demons in the Demon Market are exactly the same."
Jing Wuya said, "Aren't they also up in the mountains?"
Yu Hongdou nodded slightly, then added, "Speaking of which, I wonder if the Demon Market will get mixed up with the Southern Demon Domain."
Jing Wuya shook his head; he wasn't too sure himself.
"Alright, let's keep moving. The road ahead won't be easy to travel, so we need to stay sharp."
Hearing this, Yu Hongdou's expression turned serious.
"Right."
Jing Wuya then added, "I'll take a nap first. You keep watch."
"Huh? Didn't you just say to stay sharp? How can you just go to sleep?"
Before Yu Hongdou could even finish asking, snores were already echoing from the mule's back.
His mouth twitched in utter speechlessness. He had been leading this mule the entire way.
He just wanted to go ride a boat. How did this demon chaos break out so suddenly? It was incredibly annoying.
They continued heading south along the road.
They hadn't gone much farther when a sudden burst of demonic energy emanated from the nearby mountain forest.
Yu Hongdou looked over, instinctively gripping his Sword tightly.
The sleeping Jing Wuya spoke up. "He isn't paying attention to us. Just keep moving."
Yu Hongdou paused and asked, "What do you mean, 'isn't paying attention'?"
Jing Wuya replied, "I mean he saw us, but he's too lazy to bother with us."
"Huh?" Yu Hongdou paused again. "Didn't you say demons love eating people?"
"Are you a person?"
Yu Hongdou looked at Jing Wuya and retorted, "Aren't you a person?"
Jing Wuya reached out and whacked him on the head.
"Who would dare provoke me? I used to be an elder of Sword Mountain! Unless these third-rate demons have a death wish, they know better."
Yu Hongdou smacked his lips and muttered, "You've said that eight hundred times. Who knows if you're just bragging."
