Hongyuan Tianxia had many demons, but this northward expansion had been meticulously planned. When to depart and when to return—everything followed a strict schedule.
As the sun set and the evening sky darkened, the demons who had headed to Yan County returned one after another.
"Where is Snake Seven?"
The leading demon furrowed his brow.
The nearby demons exchanged glances. A rat demon with an effeminate air spoke up, "Perhaps there were simply too many people and he lost track of time while eating. Hmph. Yan County has the largest population, and the most delicious one at that."
"We'll wait one more quarter."
That quarter quickly passed, and the sky grew fully dark.
Yet there was still no sign of Snake Seven returning.
The leading demon frowned slightly, the scar between his eyebrows creasing as well.
The named rat demon raised an eyebrow. "I don't get along with him. I'm not going. Call someone else, don't ask me."
The leader paused. He glanced at the rat demon but did not press the issue. Instead, he said, "Sha Tang, come take a trip with me."
A demon clad in a crimson robe with mild, peaceful features stepped forward. "I will gladly follow you, Shangguan."
Guoshan cast him a look of absolute disdain.
"You don't even speak like a demon," he sneered. The demon named Sha Tang merely offered him a faint smile before following Shangguan toward Yan County.
Yet in the brief moment Sha Tang glanced back, a vicious glint flashed in his eyes.
Shangguan caught that vicious glint but remained silent.
He figured that other rat demon probably wouldn't live to see tomorrow.
After they had walked a fair distance, Sha Tang broke the silence. "Shangguan, I fear Snake Seven has met with disaster."
"Oh?"
Shangguan paused. "What do you know?"
"There have been certain rumors about Yan County. Even residing in the Southern Domain, I heard a few things."
"Let's hear them."
"First is Qiuyue Fang in Yan County. Rumor has it there is a Daoist temple outside the district named Liuyun Temple. In the early years, a Supreme Immortal resided there, bestowing blessings and great fortune on several occasions."
"Second is a man known as Mister Liuju. In his early years, he traveled the world and authored Strange Tales from the Mountains and Wilds. He settled in Qiuyue Fang in his twilight years and formed good ties with many demons. The man has long since passed away, yet there are still demons guarding his tomb."
"Third is the spirit of the lotus pond in Oulianfang. Its cultivation rests at the Pre-Heaven stage. It once received guidance from an immortal and shares a deep connection with the Supreme Immortal of Liuyun Temple. A couple of years ago, I attempted to visit this entity, but unfortunately, I never got to meet them."
Shangguan's brow twitched as he listened. "To think Yan County has so many hidden depths..."
He cast a look at Sha Tang and paused. "I recall Snake Seven offended you in the past?"
Sha Tang smiled warmly. "Just a minor squabble. Please pay it no mind, Shangguan."
Hearing this, Shangguan fully understood.
No wonder he hadn't mentioned any of this earlier.
The demon might look friendly on the surface, but he was calculating every move in his heart.
"Yan County is closer. We'll head there first."
"As Shangguan commands."
Upon arriving in Yan County, Shangguan swept his gaze across the area.
But before he could step into the district...
...he spotted a little girl in red sitting cross-legged on the path leading inside.
Yu Hongjin was dozing off. Her cheeks were flushed red, and drool leaked from the corner of her mouth—she lacked any semblance of dignity.
Sha Tang paused, murmuring, "Rumor has it that this one always maintains the appearance of a little girl. I didn't expect it to be true."
Just as he was thinking this...
...Yu Hongjin, who had been sound asleep on the ground, suddenly bolted upright.
She rubbed her eyes and let out a yawn.
Smacking her lips, she looked over at them.
"Hm?"
Yu Hongjin paused for a moment, then got to her feet.
"You've finally arrived."
She patted the dust off her clothes and stretched.
Then, she pulled out a Gourd.
Sha Tang stepped forward, cupping his hands in greeting. "I have see—"
But before he could finish, Yu Hongjin raised her hand and unleashed a Divine Ability.
"Wine, rise! Fire, come!"
The moment the Gourd opened, a massive fireball surged outward, roaring toward them.
Startled, Sha Tang threw his hands up.
"Whoosh!"
Countless dead leaves swirled into the air as he summoned a water art, instantly enveloping the incoming flames. He deflected the attack to the side, where it crashed into the ground and exploded.
Yu Hongjin blinked at the sight. "Water arts? Wood arts?"
Sha Tang cupped his hands once more. "You flatter me. These are merely my innate Divine Abilities."
"You've got some skill."
Yu Hongjin pursed her lips, falling into thought.
Suddenly, she lifted her head. She raised her hand again, and the surrounding lotus ponds began to tremble.
Sha Tang stared blankly, a sudden surge of shock gripping his heart.
Beside him, Shangguan reacted in an instant.
"Get back!"
Across the entire lotus pond, the tiny, unbloomed flower buds began to grow madly. In the blink of an eye, they all burst into full bloom.
Yu Hongjin considered them for a second, then pointed toward several specific blossoms from afar.
The blooming flowers abruptly radiated a cyan light.
In an instant, the scenery before Sha Tang and Shangguan warped.
The sky darkened, and their surroundings abruptly transformed into a realm of water mirrors. Beneath their feet lay a watery surface perfectly reflecting their figures, while a solitary bright moon hung overhead. The lake's surface lay completely still without a single ripple, bathed only in brilliant, pure moonlight.
It was a place of absolute tranquility, yet it instilled a deep unease.
It was far too quiet.
Shangguan narrowed his eyes. "The Moon Lake Divine Ability of Qingxian Temple..."
"Oho."
They looked over to see a tree branch materialize out of thin air above the water. Yu Hongjin sat perched upon it, her bare feet splashing lightly in the lake.
She took a swig of wine. "You actually know your stuff."
"Hic..."
Yu Hongjin let out a boozy hiccup. "You two are interesting. One has knowledge, the other has skill."
With that, she lifted her hand, revealing the Lotus Flower that held the snake demon captive.
"Snake Seven!"
Shangguan blurted out.
Trapped within the Lotus Flower, Snake Seven cried out, "Shangguan, this fish demon has endless tricks! Be careful!"
Snake Seven's gaze then shifted to Sha Tang. He paused, failing to utter a single word to him.
Sha Tang knew perfectly well that the snake wasn't happy to see him here.
Yu Hongjin casually slapped the Lotus Flower, sending the imprisoned Snake Seven into a fit of agonizing wails.
She let out a cold snort. "You have a lot of nerve! You dare come here to stir up trouble without even checking whose territory this is?"
Shangguan took a step forward and cupped his hands in a respectful salute. "We truly did not know this was your domain. It was never our intention to offend. Since you've already taught him a lesson, why don't we turn our swords into plowshares? As fellow members of the Demon Race, my Hongyuan Tianxia naturally does not wish to make an enemy of you."
"Who are you calling a demon?"
Yu Hongjin blinked. "I'm not one of you, so you'd better get that straight. Opening and closing your mouth with 'fish demon' this, 'fish demon' that—who exactly are you looking down on?"
"To hell with your Hongyuan Tianxia! The name sounds grand, but stirring up trouble in the Mortal World is nothing special. Your Grand Aunt is telling you straight: I've got people backing me up, too! The Beicang Dragon Lord of the Desolate Sea and the Second Crown Prince of the Tongtian River Dragon Palace are both friends of mine!"
"If you don't give me a satisfactory answer today, this little snake is staying right here. Actually, no—all of you are staying here. Everyone else is gone, so I'll just use you to cure my boredom."
