Lihua lay sprawled on the desk, gently patting Chen Changsheng's palm with its paw. "From now on, Lihua will look out for you," it said. "We'll live the good life."
"Oh?"
Chen Changsheng didn't know whether to laugh or cry. "Alright," he said. "This Chen will live the good life with you."
Lihua hummed smugly, its tail swishing back and forth in obvious delight.
It was still a child at heart.
Chen Changsheng smoothed its fur. "That Demon Pill you mentioned earlier," he asked. "What was that about?"
Lihua paused. "Ah... the Demon Pill..."
Chen Changsheng spoke bluntly. "I heard there is a man in the Demon Gate named Wang He. With the Demon Sovereign's help, he swallowed a Demon Pill and ascended straight to the realm of Demon Sovereign."
Lihua let out an awkward, hollow laugh. "Is... is that so? Haha..."
Chen Changsheng reached out and tapped its head.
Lihua fell silent, then muttered, "If we're really counting, I'm hundreds of years old."
"This Chen often taught you not to lie to people."
"Mm..."
"Then why did you lie to This Chen?"
Lihua shook its head. "Lihua didn't lie to you. Lihua just didn't tell the whole truth."
Silence fell over the temple.
Chen Changsheng gently stroked its fur.
Normally, it would have felt comfortable, but Lihua found it a bit awkward.
It simply got up and shifted its position, moving a little further away from him.
The two remained wordless, the atmosphere growing increasingly heavy.
Chen Changsheng let out a soft sigh. He stood up and said, "You're doing quite well for yourself now. You don't lack food or drink, and you look every bit the wealthy landlord. This Chen is happy for you. At the very least, you've found your own way to live instead of trailing behind someone else, only seeing what they see and hearing what they hear. It's good..."
"Knowing this sets my mind at ease."
Leaving it at that, Chen Changsheng added, "We shall meet again if fate allows."
Lihua's heart gave a sudden lurch.
It looked up and hurriedly got to its feet. "Where are you going?"
"To seek the Great Dao."
Chen Changsheng gave a warm smile. "Wish This Chen smooth sailing."
Lihua opened its mouth as light spilled in through the doorway.
In that moment, it was no longer the cat immortal bathed in the light, but rather a mouse cowering in the shadows.
It stood in silence for a long time, opening its mouth several times without uttering a single word.
Chen Changsheng smiled warmly. Seeing that Lihua remained silent, he didn't press the matter. He simply said, "Farewell."
Lihua watched him turn and walk out of the temple, step by step.
After a long silence, it finally opened its mouth and called out, "Chen the Good Man!"
Chen Changsheng glanced back.
"I wish you..."
For some reason, Lihua's eyes had grown red.
It sniffled. "I wish you smooth sailing."
Chen Changsheng nodded. "I'll borrow your good wishes."
Lihua watched until Chen Changsheng's figure completely disappeared from sight.
At that moment, its tears began to fall.
It wept like a child, completely unable to hold them back.
Human emotions were always incredibly complex, and a cat's were no different.
Its mind was in disarray.
Looking at this temple and a peaceful life where it never had to worry about food or drink, Lihua couldn't help but remember the past. Times had been hard back then, but it always felt like they were far more interesting than now.
And Chen Changsheng was the person who had shown it all of that.
Only now, they were parting ways.
Meet again if fate allows... meet again if fate allows...
Chen Changsheng exhaled softly. By the time he returned to Shangjing City, the sky had already grown dark.
He went to a Wine Tavern and ordered a jar of wine.
He drank alone, recalling his early years when he used to drink with the Old Sword Cultivator. Back then, he couldn't understand how a person's eyes could hold such complex emotions. Now, he finally understood.
Perhaps the Old Sword Cultivator had been right all along.
The affairs of the Red Dust hurt the most.
Chen Changsheng drank alone, downing cup after cup until he collapsed against the table.
The night deepened.
The Wine Tavern was getting ready to close. Only then did the waiter manage to rouse him.
"Sir? Sir?"
Chen Changsheng sobered up a little as the waiter shook him.
"I'm sorry, sir," the waiter said. "Our shop is closing up for the night. Why don't you... find somewhere else to sleep?"
Chen Changsheng lifted his head and gave a groggy nod.
He picked up a wine pot and staggered out the door.
The waiter looked at the dead-drunk man and couldn't help but shake his head. He didn't pay it much mind, however. Once the man was gone, he went back to packing things away and wiping down the tables.
He had seen far too many drunks like this before.
Chen Changsheng found a street corner, slumped down, and went to sleep hugging his wine pot.
He didn't get to sleep there for long, however.
Patrolling guards spotted the dead-drunk Chen Changsheng in the night and immediately stepped forward to drive him away. "Hey, wake up! Wake up!"
Chen Changsheng woke up a fraction more as he looked at the guards crowding around him.
"What's your name?" one of the guards demanded. "Where do you live? What are you doing sleeping here?"
Chen Changsheng exhaled a breath smelling heavily of alcohol. He slowly got to his feet. "I'm leaving right now."
"Leaving where!?"
The guard shouted, "Explain yourself clearly before you go!"
The guard's tone was rather fierce, but that was how they usually operated. If they weren't fierce and didn't hurl harsh curses, how could they make people fear them?
Chen Changsheng waved his hand, swatting the guard's hand aside.
Under the watchful eyes of the guards, Chen Changsheng took a step. In an instant, he was far away from them.
"Ah!"
The guards were greatly alarmed.
In the mere blink of an eye, Chen Changsheng had moved a good ten paces away.
The guard who had been interrogating him just a moment ago opened his mouth to speak, but quickly snapped it shut.
"What the hell..."
Who would dare chase after him? Someone with that kind of skill was far beyond what they could afford to offend. All they could do was report it to their superiors and let them make a decision.
"You guys follow him first! If you lose him, so be it, but I need to head back to the Magistrate's Office!"
Shangjing City had been under martial law these past few years. This was largely because the demon uprising in the Southern Domain had left the entire world in a state of panic. Who would dare ignore an unidentified person like this entering Shangjing City?
Chen Changsheng staggered down the street, his gaze searching everywhere, but he couldn't find a single place to rest his feet.
It felt as though he would be driven away no matter where he went.
He felt a surge of anger, yet in his current state, he looked thoroughly wretched and destitute.
He had walked through countless places across this world and seen so many sights, yet in the end, he didn't even have a home.
How laughable.
His mind swimming, Chen Changsheng could no longer suppress his drunkenness. He collapsed right there on the side of the street.
The darkness of the night grew even thicker.
Then, the heavy thud of approaching footsteps rang out.
The guards gathered, entirely encircling Chen Changsheng.
"Is that him?"
"That's the man!"
"Surround him!"
The guards stepped forward to close in.
A figure suddenly dropped down from the sky.
"Who's there?!"
The woman was clad in martial attire, her hair tied up, radiating a valiant and heroic aura.
"Scram!"
The woman tossed out a Waist Token.
A guard picked it up and was instantly startled.
He carefully handed the Waist Token back, then hurriedly led his men away.
