Immortal Travel of Longevity

Chapter 1289: All-Hearing Ears

"Sir, who was that woman just now? She tells us to back off, and we just do it?"

"What do you mean, 'that woman'? That's the Bureau Chief of the Immortal-Demon Bureau. She could wipe out the likes of us without breaking a sweat."

"Ah?!"

"Let's go. We'll head back and report. Since the Immortal-Demon Bureau has taken over, we don't need to worry about the rest."

...

After the group of officials from Shangjing City departed, the street fell quiet once more.

The woman who had chased the group away sat down beside Chen Changsheng, who had passed out drunk.

She fished a piece of candied fruit from her robes and popped it into her mouth.

The faint sweetness spread through her mouth, a flavor she very much enjoyed.

He was supposed to be radiant.

"Cough..."

Chen Changsheng coughed. He suddenly rolled over, pushed himself up on his hands and knees, and began vomiting heavily.

Startled, the woman hurriedly leaned in and patted Chen Changsheng's back.

"Mister, Mister Chen?"

Chen Changsheng let out a breath and slumped back into a sitting position, cracking his eyes open to look at the person in front of him.

He stared at her under the moonlight, but in his drunken stupor, he couldn't recall who she was at all.

The woman paused. Seeing Mister Chen's bewildered gaze, she quickly said, "It's me, Mister Chen. I'm Song Bao. Don't you remember me? By the Sheng River, you saved me and even cured my eyes, Mister?"

"Song Bao..."

"Yes, Song Bao."

Chen Changsheng had a headache, but prompted by her words, the memory of such a person finally surfaced.

That was many, many years ago.

Song Bao had changed drastically in the blink of an eye. She was no longer a little girl; with her graying hair and weathered appearance, she looked more like an old woman.

Their last meeting had been over fifty years ago.

Song Bao said, "I never expected so many years to pass before seeing you again. You haven't aged a day, Mister Chen, while I've already turned into an old crone."

Chen Changsheng propped himself up a little straighter, resting his back against the wall lining the street. Parting his lips slightly, he said, "It is only right that people grow old. To never age and never die... that is the true torment."

Song Bao didn't quite understand, but she smiled and nodded.

There were exceedingly few people in this world who could empathize with Chen Changsheng. Every new one meant another tragic soul in the world.

Chen Changsheng raised his Wine Gourd, preparing to drink again.

But Song Bao stopped him. "Mister Chen, you can't drink anymore."

Chen Changsheng waved a hand dismissively. "It's just a little wine."

Seeing this, Song Bao sighed softly and stopped trying to hinder him.

Chen Changsheng tilted his head back to chug the wine, his gaze catching the bright, clear moonlight. It was so deeply moving.

"Do you have a place to stay now, Mister?"

Chen Changsheng thought for a moment. "Everywhere around me is a place to stay."

Song Bao opened her mouth to speak, but finally said, "With your status, Mister, how can you use the sky as your blanket and the earth as your bed?"

"What status does This Chen have?" Chen Changsheng asked with a smile.

"You are..."

Song Bao paused, suddenly unsure of what to say.

It seemed Mister Chen truly hadn't left much behind; even rumors of him were few and far between.

Chen Changsheng let out a breath and said, "Thank you for helping This Chen out tonight. This Chen is also relieved to see how you've turned out. To think that the little girl from back then is now displaying such mighty prestige in this world... it truly took This Chen by surprise."

"It's good."

Chen Changsheng tilted his head back, took a gulp of wine, and said, "This Chen is a magnet for trouble, so I won't bother you any longer. We will meet again if fate allows."

"Mister Chen?"

Song Bao watched him stand up and walk forward. His steps were staggered, yet he never paused for a single moment.

She didn't understand why Mister Chen was unwilling to accept her goodwill.

She had once believed that the gaze she saw in her youth was the most complex thing she would ever witness. But now, looking at those eyes again, they were even more complicated than before.

What kind of experiences did it take for a person, even while drunk, to still have eyes so filled with the past?

Under the draped canopy of night, Mister Qingshan walked further and further away.

This wasn't quite what Song Bao had expected. She thought this reunion would yield a few stories, but it seemed Mister Chen was deliberately avoiding her, leaving in a rush.

She didn't understand. She didn't understand it at all.

Song Bao stood there for a long time. Suddenly, all her guesses coalesced into a murmur, "Is Mister Chen afraid of this boundless Red Dust?"

She couldn't understand, but the man was already gone.

...

Somehow, Chen Changsheng stumbled his way over to a tree.

He shook his Gourd, but it was completely empty inside.

Not a single drop of wine remained.

Chen Changsheng sighed, feeling that he hadn't drunk to his heart's content.

Lying down beneath the tree, he originally intended to just drift off to sleep right there.

But thinking of what had just happened, he felt it was too much of a hassle. If the officials came looking for him again, he would inevitably be woken up.

At that thought, Chen Changsheng tilted his head and looked up.

Then, he tucked away his Wine Gourd and began climbing the tree in a rather awkward, clumsy manner.

A moment later, he reached the branches, found a comfortable position, and fell asleep.

In that instant, he also seemed to finally understand something from years past.

"No wonder that Old Sword Cultivator slept in trees back then."

Chen Changsheng hadn't understood it at the time, but now it all made perfect sense.

Up in the trees... it really was a great place.

Chen Changsheng closed his eyes, exhaled a breath of wine-scented air, and drifted into slumber.

As the moonlight cascaded down, the Mortal World fell completely silent in the night.

It was like a dream, leaving one blissfully intoxicated within it.

...

By the time Chen Changsheng woke up, it was already noon of the next day.

He had been discovered by several children playing beneath the tree.

It seemed quite logical; only children possessed such meticulous observational skills. Passersby rarely looked toward such places.

"Why is he sleeping in the tree?"

"Won't he fall out?"

"How did he climb up there?"

"He doesn't seem awake yet. Should we shake him awake?"

"That might not be a good idea."

Chen Changsheng woke up amidst this flurry of whispers. After listening for a moment, he realized that these kids genuinely wanted to shake him out of the tree.

And so he called out, "If you really shake me down, won't This Chen crush you?"

"Ah!!"

The four children were startled.

"He's awake, he's awake."

Chen Changsheng stretched his back lazily, then rolled over and leaped lightly down, landing on his feet.

The four children backed away slightly, looking at Chen Changsheng with wary eyes.

"Second Brother, Second Brother, he looks like a schoolteacher."

"A little bit, yeah."

Chen Changsheng looked at them and said, "This Chen is not a schoolteacher."

The two children whispering to each other jumped in shock.

"How did you hear that?"

They seemed incredibly amazed.

Chen Changsheng laughed. "It's called All-Hearing Ears. This Chen can hear everything you say!"

The four children widened their eyes, looking as though they completely believed him.

"Are you for real?"

"So amazing!!"
