Immortal Travel of Longevity

Chapter 1314: I Stand Instructed

Zhao Yuqing understood Yun Hengzi's obsession with the matter. But some things could not be accomplished simply through desire. The variables involved were always countless and impossible to predict.

He too had once played a game of chess against Heaven and Earth, but the final outcome had been far from satisfactory.

That was when he realized a fundamental truth: the world was meant to be this way. Only like this could it truly be a world, rather than a place devoid of rules.

He had grown weary of it. That was why he had retreated to Yunfu Mountain to cultivate in peace, rarely concerning himself with the affairs of the Mortal World ever since.

After parting ways with Yun Hengzi, Zhao Yuqing returned to his residence.

His inner demon had already been waiting there for a long time.

The inner demon looked at him, waiting for him to speak.

Zhao Yuqing hesitated a moment before saying, "That man shares your intentions."

The inner demon froze, but quickly understood. He instantly burst into loud laughter.

The inner demon's laughter came to an abrupt halt, giving way to a long sigh.

"This world is getting more and more interesting."

Zhao Yuqing pushed his door open, ignoring the nonsense.

Having received his answer, the inner demon departed. His attitude had shifted; perhaps this Demon Lord would be an excellent amusement for him.

...

A year later, Chen Changsheng returned to the Cultivation World.

Few regions in the Cultivation World experienced normal seasons, simply because the Desolate Sea is ever-changing, and the climate shifted alongside it.

It was the sixth month of the year, yet snow began to fall.

Chen Changsheng harbored peculiar feelings toward this snow; it was a weather phenomenon he rarely saw.

A snowflake landed in his palm and quickly melted.

This inevitably reminded him of his years inside the spirit cage.

That particular snowfall...

It was still fresh in his memory.

He had practiced his sword in the snow. With One Sword, Cold Mountain Snow, he had drawn the heavy snowfall to gather entirely around himself.

Those had been peaceful years, a time when his thoughts were untroubled.

Chen Changsheng pulled his thoughts back to the present and murmured, "The snow is getting heavier..."

He walked through the desolate, unpopulated snowfield. He did not know where he was. The surroundings were a blank expanse of white, obscuring everything from view.

Nor did he know how long this snow would fall.

He entered a forest and decided to rest at its edge.

Seeing that the snow showed no signs of stopping, he built a small hut on the spot to shelter from the cold.

Finding his days idle, he sat in the hut and took out Paper and Brush to draft Geographical Maps of this Cultivation World.

He drew everything he knew and remembered onto the Geographical Maps.

Starting from the Flying Boat Ferry in the Southern Domain of the Mortal World, he followed the routes of the Flying Vessels, continuously charting the territories of the Cultivation World. He drew until he reached Qingyuan, and as he moved further out, he annotated everything clearly.

This world was far too vast. Even after Chen Changsheng drew everything he remembered, a massive swath of the map remained blank.

But it did not matter. Chen Changsheng figured he would finish drawing it one day.

The heavy snow fell for seven days before finally stopping.

Chen Changsheng resumed his journey. The road ahead was long, and he did not know where he was going. To walk slowly, to observe slowly—this was a persistence unique to Chen Changsheng.

...

Chen Changsheng was a tireless walker.

He had walked through many places over this period of time.

According to the Geographical Maps in his memory, he was currently about three thousand li north of Qingyuan. There were no traces of cities here, but he had come across villages along the way.

They were self-sufficient, existing without any dynastic authority or government.

In the eyes of these people, the greatest authority in the world belonged to the immortals upon the Immortal Mountain.

This was the Cultivation World. Nearly eighty percent of its lands were exactly like this.

The Cultivation World had no dynasties, much less state regimes.

Chen Changsheng saw that some regions were incredibly backward. Although they practiced agriculture and sericulture, their methods were exceptionally primitive. Irrigation canals sat right beside their fields, yet they did not know how to draw water from them. Their clothes were woven directly from hemp rope.

After pondering this for a long time, Chen Changsheng occasionally stopped to linger in these places.

He taught these people how to divert river water to irrigate their farmlands, how to use different materials to weave clothing, and how to prevent pests and crop diseases.

But upon further thought, Chen Changsheng felt that doing this was merely a drop in the bucket.

It wasn't until he chatted with a woman in a roadside Wine Tavern that he gained a clearer direction.

"Since you have such skills, why not compile them into a book for people to read?"

"True," Chen Changsheng said. "But the villages here are located far apart, and information is entirely sealed off. Not to mention, hardly anyone knows how to read. A book dropped here wouldn't make the slightest splash. Most likely, it would just end up propping up a table leg, or being thrown into a fire for warmth."

Hearing this, the woman in the Wine Tavern fell deep in thought.

She had to admit that Chen Changsheng made a valid point.

This place was simply too massive.

In Chen Changsheng's eyes, this contiguous stretch of land was at least as vast as three Mortal Worlds, yet its population was nowhere near that of the Mortal World.

"Hmm..."

The woman mused for a moment but failed to come up with a solution. She changed the subject, saying, "My name is Chen Lingyun. I study under Rosy Cloud Mountain, and my master is True Man Luoxia. I think you're a very interesting person. Why don't you come back to the mountain with me to meet my master? She is also very interested in agriculture."

"We share the same surname."

"We do. Quite a coincidence, isn't it?"

Chen Lingyun smiled, exuding the bold, unrestrained air of a wanderer of the jianghu.

Thus, at her invitation, Chen Changsheng traveled to Rosy Cloud Mountain.

"The name Rosy Cloud Mountain... This Chen feels he has heard it before..."

"Don't mind that."

Chen Lingyun said, "In this vast world, places sharing the name of my Rosy Cloud Mountain can be found everywhere. I know of four others just from hearsay. And I've heard the title 'True Man Luoxia' no less than seven or eight times."

"I see."

Chen Changsheng smiled, finding it rather amusing.

Rosy Cloud Mountain wasn't far. Only after ascending the mountain did Chen Changsheng learn that disciples here were incredibly sparse. Including Chen Lingyun, there was only a Master and a Junior Sister.

Three people made up the entire Daoist temple.

This phenomenon was extremely common in the Cultivation World. Some mountain sects didn't even have three people; it could not be any more ordinary.

True Man Luoxia warmly hosted Chen Changsheng.

She looked like a middle-aged woman, genial and polite, speaking with great kindness. She was clearly a well-cultivated Daoist.

"Fellow Daoist has also dabbled in preventing pests and crop diseases?"

"I know a little..."

Chen Changsheng laid out everything he knew, one point at a time.

"This method of boiling seeds is truly unheard of."

True Man Luoxia was immensely astonished, listening with ever closer attention.

Chen Changsheng said, "Many places in the Mortal World have already popularized these methods to increase their yield per mu."

True Man Luoxia raised her hand, and a seed fell into her palm. With a slight surge of energy, the seed sprouted and grew.

"We cultivators have Immortal Arts at our disposal. We only know that plant spirits can be stimulated to grow, but we do not understand the fundamental principles. Having walked the Dao for so long, though we have not forgotten the taste of the five grains, we have forgotten where they come from."

True Man Luoxia let out a long breath and said, "Fellow Daoist, I stand instructed."
