With the clouds as a side dish, fine wine flowed down their throats.
Chen Changsheng drank himself into a stupor on Bright Moon Mountain.
It was a strange sensation. Through these seven people with their vastly different temperaments, Chen Changsheng finally grasped what it meant to be an immortal.
What it meant to be unfettered, and what it meant to be free.
What it meant to be a true immortal.
Drinking wine with the clouds—what a wondrous affair.
It called for a hearty toast.
Chen Changsheng and the seven companions in the Daoist temple drank themselves utterly senseless, passing out without exception.
Some slumped over the tables, while others collapsed onto the floor.
Looking at them now, they lacked any semblance of immortal bearing—yet they were the truest of immortals.
An immortal was unfettered, living freely and following their heart's desires.
Early the next morning, as broad daylight washed over the world, Chen Changsheng slowly woke up.
Most of the other seven had also awakened. Two Fellow Daoists were already seated under a tree, playing a game of chess.
Chen Changsheng stepped closer to watch.
One of the players spoke up. "Fellow Daoist Chen, you're awake! Come, see how I'm playing. Fellow Daoist Xu keeps saying my moves stink, but I don't see it. Fellow Daoist Chen, come be the judge—where do my moves stink?"
Chen Changsheng didn't know whether to laugh or cry. "A played move is a good move. Not daring to play is what truly stinks," he said.
"Hah, that makes sense."
"I can tell Fellow Daoist Chen also understands chess. Come, come, Fellow Daoist Chen, help me crush Fellow Daoist Xu's arrogance!"
"I'm not sure that's a good idea..."
"Just come over!"
Left with no choice, Chen Changsheng sat down.
Fellow Daoist Xu looked at Chen Changsheng and smiled. "Fellow Daoist Chen, since you are placing game pieces on behalf of Fellow Daoist Nangong, I won't be holding back."
"Naturally," Chen Changsheng said with a smile.
Fellow Daoist Nangong chuckled. "Keep bragging. For all you know, Fellow Daoist Chen's skills might be far above yours."
With that, the match resumed.
After a few game pieces were played, Fellow Daoist Xu frowned in utter bewilderment. "Black attacks the star point, yet you ignore it and instead invade the corner to destroy my territory. What sort of strategy is this, Fellow Daoist?"
Despite his confusion, Fellow Daoist Xu followed up with his own move.
By the forty-seventh move, Fellow Daoist Xu took another look at the board. When his eyes landed on a solitary white game piece, his heart instantly turned cold.
To think such a trap had been laid so far in advance!
At the seventy-third move, the outcome on the board was set in stone.
Seeing this, Chen Changsheng said, "Fellow Daoist Xu, let's call it a draw."
"Ah?" Fellow Daoist Xu snapped out of his daze. He shot a glance at Fellow Daoist Nangong and hurriedly agreed, "A draw! We'll call it a draw!"
His face flushed red as he hastily scooped up the game pieces from the board.
Fellow Daoist Nangong quickly reached out. "Hey, hey, hey, why are you clearing the board? This match was brilliant! Why did you mess it up?"
Fellow Daoist Xu offered a helpless smile, wondering if the man was truly blind to the situation or just playing dumb.
Chen Changsheng's skill was leagues above his own.
They hadn't tied because a draw was the only possible outcome; they tied because Chen Changsheng was gracious enough to offer one.
Fellow Daoist Xu quickly turned back. "Fellow Daoist Chen, that opening move was truly brilliant. Thinking back on it, I still find it incredibly profound. I wonder if I might ask for some guidance?"
"Naturally."
"You really wouldn't mind?"
"Of course not."
"Come, come, let's replay the match."
Fellow Daoist Nangong watched from the side. As they reconstructed the board, realization finally dawned on him. "To think it was this profound!"
Chen Changsheng kept a friendly smile, explaining his thoughts while placing the game pieces.
Mid-explanation, Chen Changsheng suddenly remembered something. "By the way, there is a small matter I'd like to ask you Fellow Daoists for help with."
"Speak your mind, Fellow Daoist Chen. As long as we can be of assistance."
"This Chen wishes to draw a set of Geographical Maps of the Cultivation World."
"Eh?"
Both Fellow Daoist Nangong and Fellow Daoist Xu froze in surprise.
Chen Changsheng then brought out the Geographical Maps he had already drafted.
Fellow Daoist Nangong stared blankly before crying out in shock, "You've traveled through this many regions?!"
Seeing the terrain plotted out on the parchment, Fellow Daoist Xu was likewise left in a daze.
"This is Qingyuan! Ah! Yunfu Mountain... You've even been to the domain of that demonic fiend Zhao?"
Chen Changsheng smiled wryly. "I only caught a glimpse from afar."
Fellow Daoist Xu took a deep breath and cupped his hands. "I am in awe!"
Fellow Daoist Nangong stroked his chin. "Marvelous, truly marvelous! Such Geographical Maps will be a merit for the ages, benefiting generations to come! This endeavor of yours is no small matter, Fellow Daoist. It is a grand undertaking!"
Chen Changsheng let out a helpless chuckle. "It's nothing more than recording the places I've visited on paper. I wouldn't call it a grand undertaking."
Fellow Daoist Xu praised him continuously. "Why didn't we ever think to draft our own set of Geographical Maps back in the day?"
"We were too busy enjoying ourselves. Who would've thought of this?"
"According to the map, about three hundred li outward from Rosy Cloud Mountain brings us here."
"In that case, our Bright Moon Mountain is exactly right here."
"Spot on, spot on!"
Fellow Daoist Xu quickly chimed in, "About five hundred li to the east is the Black Bear Lair. Let's see... Ah, right here. Yes, it should be right about here..."
Relying on their memories, the group began to fill in the surrounding terrain.
Gradually, the remaining Fellow Daoists woke up as well.
"What are you all doing?"
"Get over here!"
Upon hearing this, the other Fellow Daoists were taken aback, but their interest was instantly piqued.
"How fascinating! Let me help too."
"Three thousand li to the north lies an expanse of yellow sand, utterly desolate and devoid of human life. Legend has it that the area was once lush with vegetation, but a battle between two Supreme Immortals left it completely barren."
"It doesn't even have a name today..."
"I've heard it was the final resting place of the defeated party, Exalted Chilian. Why don't we name it the Fallen Immortal Desert?"
"Brilliant! That works perfectly."
With the seven of them pitching in, completing the Geographical Maps progressed by leaps and bounds. These seven had gathered from all corners of the world, and the sheer number of places they had collectively traversed was virtually uncountable. Under their hands, the map steadily grew full and complete.
They worked feverishly from daytime straight into the night before finally snapping out of their intense focus.
Looking at the Geographical Maps once more, they realized it was already more than half-finished.
"Fellow Daoist Chen," Fellow Daoist Xu said, "we know the rough locations of all these regions, but we aren't exactly sure how the territories are divided. We have no idea where the exact borders lie. I'm afraid you'll still have to travel there and map it out step by step yourself."
Chen Changsheng smiled. "You Fellow Daoists have already done This Chen a massive favor. At the very least, I now have a clear direction and won't be stumbling around blindly."
"Not at all. We could never match your level of ambition, Fellow Daoist."
Chen Changsheng spent one more day on Bright Moon Mountain before finally making his descent.
The seven Fellow Daoists came to see him off as he left.
"Fellow Daoist Chen, the Cultivation World is boundlessly vast. Even the seven of us have never truly walked its entirety. You are a man of grand ambitions, and an incredibly fascinating one at that. Should you encounter any trouble on your journey, feel free to invoke our names. The world widely knows us as the Seven Immortals of Bright Moon. Most will give us at least a little bit of face."
Chen Changsheng cupped his hands in gratitude. "Many thanks, Fellow Daoists."
Fellow Daoist Xu stepped forward. "If we ever cross paths again, we absolutely must play another match."
"Naturally!"
The group escorted Chen Changsheng all the way down the mountain.
Carrying the Geographical Maps, Chen Changsheng set off once more onto an unknown journey.
This encounter had been truly profound, leaving behind an endless aftertaste.
