Sitting at the tea stand, Chen Changsheng unrolled a Geographical Map, took out a brush, and carefully traced the lands he had recently traversed.
“Oho, Fellow Daoist, what might you be drawing there?”
Chen Changsheng had only been sitting there for a short while before a man leaned in.
Wei Shiyu was drinking tea at the same stand. At first, he had not paid any attention to Chen Changsheng, but the moment the man brought out that Geographical Map, it piqued his interest. He could not resist leaning over for a closer look.
One glance was all it took to realize just how extraordinary the item was.
A Geographical Map!
And not just of some small, local region—it encompassed almost the entire world.
Wei Shiyu was utterly stunned, but he quickly composed himself. Suppressing his rising excitement, he stammered, “Fellow Daoist, this... this...”
Chen Changsheng cast him a glance and asked, “Drinking tea?”
Wei Shiyu hurriedly took a seat, though his gaze kept darting back to the Geographical Map.
He scanned the writing across the parchment. Many of the depicted locations were identical to his own memory of them.
This proved it was no shoddily made Geographical Map, but an exquisitely detailed one.
Chen Changsheng asked, “Is Fellow Daoist familiar with the surrounding territory? The rivers, villages, great mountains...”
Wei Shiyu snapped back to attention and hastily said, “I am willing to lend Fellow Daoist a hand.”
The two began to chat, using the Geographical Map as their reference.
They were strangers brought together by chance, and considering how interesting the matter was, Wei Shiyu was more than happy to get involved.
They talked for a long while.
Chen Changsheng finalized the Geographical Map for that stretch of territory and offered his thanks. “Many thanks, Fellow Daoist. This Chen still has a journey to continue. Since you helped me refine this Geographical Map, this cup of tea is on This Chen.”
“You are too polite,” Wei Shiyu said with a smile.
Chen Changsheng slowly folded away the Geographical Map, tucked it into his sleeve, and stood up to leave.
“Ah, Fellow Daoist.”
Wei Shiyu stepped forward and clapped Chen Changsheng on the shoulder.
Chen Changsheng turned his head. Wei Shiyu was just about to speak when he suddenly felt as if his arm were clamped in a vice.
Looking down, he saw his hand locked in Chen Changsheng's firm grip.
Chen Changsheng was looking at him with a smile.
Wei Shiyu's heart skipped a beat.
Chen Changsheng said, “Fellow Daoist, your Dao Cultivation in the art of plucking things from the clouds is indeed brilliant. But considering This Chen just paid for your tea, how could you behave like this?”
Wei Shiyu tried to break free, only to find it a struggle. He let out a dry laugh and said, “Fellow Daoist, haha, spare my life, will you? I just had a momentary lapse in judgment. It won't happen again. Never again.”
Chen Changsheng narrowed his eyes at him. “Use your head. Not everything is yours for the taking.”
With that, he released his grip.
Without making things any harder for him, Chen Changsheng turned and walked away.
He waited until Chen Changsheng's figure vanished from sight.
Only then did Wei Shiyu breathe a sigh of relief.
He shook out his hand, muttering, “What a grip.”
Recovering his wits, he raised his hand, and a roll of paper tumbled into his palm.
“Heh heh, you still fell for my trick in the end.”
As it turned out, he had already succeeded before Chen Changsheng clamped onto his hand.
A smile tugged at the corners of Wei Shiyu's mouth as he hurriedly unrolled the ‘Geographical Map’ for a look.
Who could have expected that when the paper unfurled...
...what was drawn on it was no Geographical Map at all.
It was a Sword.
“This isn't a Geographical Map?”
Wei Shiyu froze.
The next moment, right before his eyes, that Sword suddenly leaped off the paper.
“Crap!”
Wei Shiyu instantly realized what was happening and bolted outside.
But the Sword that had manifested from the paper transformed into a streak of Sword Qi, chasing relentlessly after him.
“Fuck! I'm the one who fell for it!”
Wei Shiyu sprinted for his life, finally realizing that Chen Changsheng was not someone he could afford to provoke.
The Sword Qi pursued him, and no matter how fast or slow he ran, it maintained the exact same distance behind him.
“Why is this Sword Qi sticking to me like a leech?!”
Horrified, all Wei Shiyu could do was keep running forward.
As he ran, he saw someone up ahead watching him.
With a single glance, Wei Shiyu recognized him as the very same man from earlier.
Chen Changsheng's eyes crinkled in a smile as he watched Wei Shiyu running for his life.
Wei Shiyu cried out, “Fellow Daoist, Fellow Daoist, I know I was wrong! Please let me off this once!”
“This Chen already told you, not everything is yours for the taking,” Chen Changsheng said calmly.
Wei Shiyu wanted to argue, but the Sword Qi was drawing ever closer. Left with no other choice, he could only keep fleeing forward.
“Fellow Daoist, that's ruthless!!”
Wei Shiyu's wails drifted back from the distance.
A moment later, a streak of Sword Qi whipped past Chen Changsheng, chasing straight after Wei Shiyu.
Seeing this, Chen Changsheng stopped paying it any mind and continued on his way.
As for the Sword Qi chasing Wei Shiyu...
...it could just keep chasing him. He seemed good at running anyway, so let him run to his heart's content.
The way Chen Changsheng saw it, he did not carry anything particularly valuable or useful on his person anyway. If the little thief managed to steal something, so be it. But that Geographical Map was off-limits. He had poured his heart and soul into creating it.
Chen Changsheng raised his Wine Gourd, took a swig, and set off on the long road ahead.
However, much to Chen Changsheng's surprise...
...half a month later, he actually heard news of the little thief at a roadside inn.
“Guest, isn't that hilarious? That guy was chased for nearly eight hundred li by a streak of Sword Qi. He ran right past our inn the other day, cursing up a storm the whole time. We were dying of laughter.”
“Oh?”
Chen Changsheng was quite astonished. It seemed even he had not expected the little thief to be capable of running so far.
The waiter served Chen Changsheng his wine and said, “It was the strangest thing. From the look of him, he definitely offended someone. It's a wicked trick, making someone run without ever letting them stop. I kind of want to learn it myself.”
Chen Changsheng paused for a moment upon hearing this. “Making Sword Qi chase someone actually isn't that hard,” he said. “Ultimately, it just takes a soul-tracking method combined with a streak of Sword Qi.”
The waiter replied, “It might not be hard for a guest like you, but where would ordinary folk like us ever learn such brilliant Arts and Techniques?”
Chen Changsheng chuckled, then changed the subject. “By the way, did you happen to hear what that man was cursing about?”
“It was downright filthy,” the waiter said. “Just a whole lot of fucking this and motherfucking that. But the way he looked was hilarious—cursing his head off while looking like he was about to cry.”
Hearing this, Chen Changsheng could not help but break into a laugh.
How tenacious.
To think he had actually run so far.
It was probably because the little thief still had some strength in reserve. Everything had worked out just right.
In truth, the streak of Sword Qi Chen Changsheng had planted would not have taken the little thief's life. It was only meant to follow him indefinitely, not harm him.
Chen Changsheng had originally only intended to teach him a lesson. Who would have guessed the guy was such a good runner? It was quite a coincidence.
Suddenly, Chen Changsheng found himself rather interested in the little thief.
He wondered if they would have the chance to meet again.
He also wondered if, when they next met, the little thief would still be cursing up a storm just as the waiter had described.
