"Shop hand, let me ask you something else. What lies further ahead?"
"Up ahead..."
The shop hand replied, "If you go north, that's Cloud-Piercing Mountain. A bit to the east... you can't go there, that's Yin Mountain. As for the west, I wouldn't know. There are no roads over there, just mountains where demons linger. It's not a good place to go."
"Yin Mountain?" Chen Changsheng's curiosity was piqued.
The shop hand nodded. "Sigh, there used to be an Immortal Mountain there once. I heard from passing travelers that the whole sect was wiped out. After they died, their yin energy refused to dissipate, and it eventually became Yin Mountain."
Chen Changsheng thought for a moment. "Wouldn't that make it a gathering place for yin?" he murmured. "I imagine quite a few yin spirits have congregated there."
"Yeah."
The shop hand nodded. "There are even ghost cultivators who make special trips there for their Cultivation."
"Ghost cultivators too?"
The shop hand sighed. "Guest, you have no idea. We've got Yin Mountain to our left, a blessed land straight ahead, and more mountains full of demons to our right. Humans, demons, ghosts, cultivators—they all pass through here. I've seen a lot of them. Otherwise, why would a shop hand like me, who has no immortal affinity, go to such lengths to practice Cultivation? Out here, a single disagreement really will cost you your life."
Chen Changsheng paused at this. "To open an inn in a place like this, your establishment must have some solid backing," he noted.
The shop hand let out a wry sound. "We rely entirely on the proprietor."
"I see. Then why didn't I see the proprietor earlier?"
"The proprietor went out and won't be back for a few days. That's why I've been on edge. After so long, I finally ran into a normal person like you, so I felt a bit more at ease. Otherwise, I wouldn't have talked so much."
Chen Changsheng didn't know whether to laugh or cry. This shop hand was truly honest.
Chen Changsheng ordered another jug of wine.
"Thank you for the directions," he said. "This Chen still has a journey ahead, so I won't chat any longer."
"Leaving already?"
"Mhm."
"Alright, alright."
The shop hand offered a final warning. "The road ahead isn't easy to travel. Be careful, guest."
"I will."
Chen Changsheng stepped out the door.
He turned his head to look back at the inn.
With a glance, he noticed two Talismans pasted onto the doors of the establishment.
One to dispel yin, and one to ward off demons.
The proprietor of this inn had some real skill; that much was obvious just from these two Talismans.
As Chen Changsheng walked, he soon saw the traces of three distinct paths pointing in three different directions.
He thought for a moment, unsure of where to go.
Hesitating between the choices, he simply tossed a Copper Coin into the air.
Whichever way it fell would be the way he went.
"Tossing a coin for directions... isn't that a bit unreliable?"
Chen Changsheng muttered. But after a moment's thought, he decided it didn't matter.
He watched the Copper Coin land. It pointed toward the east.
"Yin Mountain."
Chen Changsheng picked up the Copper Coin and smiled. "A perfect opportunity to expand my horizons."
He walked forward for a hundred-odd li.
The sky gradually darkened.
Slowly, Chen Changsheng felt a current of yin energy drifting over from ahead.
Not only that, the road bore many traces left behind by sinister yin entities—for instance, a burned-out stick of incense.
This was not incense of mortal worship, but soul incense. Yin spirits loved it the most. Not only could it amplify their yin energy, but it also possessed a unique fragrance that the spirits could perceive. To a yin spirit, the sense of smell was a supreme treasure.
Unable to see the road clearly in the dead of night, Chen Changsheng summoned a fire spell in the palm of his hand to light the way.
Moving slowly forward, the yin energy grew increasingly dense until Chen Changsheng finally arrived before Yin Mountain.
Under the moonlight, the mountain towering into the clouds seemed incomparably serene, yet its macabre aura was ceaseless. Cloaked in the night, a heavy fog shrouded the mountain, making it impossible to find one's bearings.
"Dong!!"
The sudden chime of a bell echoed down from the mountain.
Chen Changsheng followed the sound with his eyes and faintly made out a massive bell at the summit.
But that great bell seemed to be ringing all on its own.
Activating his Dharma Eye, Chen Changsheng finally saw a yin spirit standing beside the great bell, ceaselessly smashing its head against the bronze.
Yet in a sudden trance...
Chen Changsheng felt the scene before his eyes abruptly change.
"You all must die!"
"Hahahaha, all of you must die!"
He saw the Immortal Mountain drenched in a bloodbath. Countless cultivators died miserably beneath a single person's blade. That killer used the blood of the sect's disciples to dye the entire peak a deep, crimson red.
Chen Changsheng shook his head, and his vision immediately returned to normal.
"It's the bell chime..."
Chen Changsheng realized what had happened. "To think this bell chime can plunge people into hallucinations," he murmured.
He looked back at the yin spirit beside the great bell.
From the looks of it, the yin spirits here were far from simple.
Chen Changsheng was just about to step forward.
Suddenly, a dark, hollow voice echoed out.
"Who dares trespass on this mountain?"
The voice was faint and ethereal, yet it concealed a heavy yin aura. Accompanied by the voice came a wave of freezing yin energy that left one intensely ill at ease.
Chen Changsheng raised his hand and waved, dispersing the yin energy rushing at his face.
"This Chen comes from the Mortal World," he said. "I tossed a coin for directions and found my way here, also wishing to see the rumored Yin Mountain for myself."
"Oh?"
The voice echoed again.
"Hahahaha..."
Amidst a burst of laughter, a figure suddenly swept out from within Yin Mountain. In a mere instant, the yin spirit arrived right before Chen Changsheng. Their eyes met.
However, the yin spirit standing before him was completely different from what Chen Changsheng had imagined.
The man wore clean, simple clothing. A Cyan-White Jade Pendant hung from his waist. With his pale, handsome face, he possessed the bearing of an elegant gentleman.
"Have you seen it now?"
The man asked.
"How can viewing it from afar count as seeing it?" Chen Changsheng asked with a smile.
"Quite bold."
Wei Shujian flipped open his Folding Fan. Glancing sideways at Chen Changsheng, he asked, "Do you even know what kind of place this Yin Mountain is? I'm afraid you have a life to enter, but no life to leave."
At this, Chen Changsheng countered, "Putting it that way only makes This Chen even more curious. Could it be that the eighteen levels of hell lie within?"
Wei Shujian replied, "Whether it's the eighteen levels of hell or not, it's more than enough to make you suffer."
"Fellow Daoist, having curiosity isn't a bad thing, but being curious about everything will cost you your life."
Chen Changsheng raised his eyes and looked toward the great bell at the mountain's peak.
Completely ignoring Wei Shujian's question, he instead asked, "Who is that person striking the bell?"
Seeing that he was being slighted, Wei Shujian said no more.
"I give you good advice and you refuse to listen. Fine, do as you please with your own life."
Wei Shujian snapped his Folding Fan shut. Giving Chen Changsheng no further mind, he turned and returned into Yin Mountain.
Seeing this, Chen Changsheng followed him and walked into the mountain.
He had barely taken half a step inside when a chorus of wails and howls assailed him.
"Screech!!!"
Countless dead souls morphed into twisted yin monsters and lunged at Chen Changsheng, jaws snapping.
With a raise of his hand, Chen Changsheng summoned the fire spirit from his Dantian.
"Crimson Refined Fire Spell, arise!"
The moment the fire spell erupted, a chorus of anguished shrieks filled the area before him.
The dense swarm of yin monsters instantly scrambled to dodge. However, the overwhelming wave of yin energy caused Chen Changsheng's flames to flicker erratically, dimming and surging in the dark.
It was Chen Changsheng's first time seeing a place with such heavy yin energy.
