The wine Yu Hongjin brewed was never bad. It hit hard, but the drunkenness faded quickly.
By the time Chen Changsheng woke, it was already dawn.
The horizon had turned pale, hinting at a faint red sun just about to rise.
Beside him, Yu Hongjin lay fast asleep. Seemingly affected by the morning chill, she couldn't help but curl into a ball.
She was still a child—a child who loved to drink and mess around.
Chen Changsheng raised a hand toward the lotus pond and plucked a leaf. It drifted into his grasp, and with a flash of a Divine Ability, expanded to the size of a quilt.
Chen Changsheng draped it over Yu Hongjin.
He let out a breath. When he looked out again, the morning sun had cast down its brilliance, bathing the entire lotus pond in a layer of light.
The lotuses gleamed under the breaking dawn.
Chen Changsheng exhaled once more, plucked a single lotus flower, and walked toward Oulianfang.
Tang Manor had long since been emptied of its people.
Yet, under Yu Hongjin's care, it had remained spotless for all these years.
Chen Changsheng arrived at Tang Manor's ancestral hall.
He placed the freshly picked lotus flower on the altar.
Staring at the towering Spirit Tablets, memories constantly surfaced in his mind.
Old acquaintances, old acquaintances.
Now, they were all deceased.
"The lotuses look beautiful this year."
Chen Changsheng said. He stood in the ancestral hall, gazing for a long time.
Aside from that, he spoke no other words.
The affairs of the world always wore down the human heart; looking too deeply brought no benefit.
Ultimately, he, Chen Changsheng, had let go of many things.
...
Yu Hongjin seemed to have anticipated Chen Changsheng's sudden departure.
She had guessed he would leave silently. He was always like this, arriving in a rush and leaving just as quickly.
The lotus pond returned to its usual tranquility.
Yu Hongjin drank alone, admiring the beautiful scenery before her that looked just like a Painted Scroll.
A long, long time ago, she had thought she would spend her entire life here. But then she met Sister Yun and went out to witness the vastness of the world, the sun, and the moon.
Yet, after everything, she had returned.
It was as if, in a daze, she finally understood why she was here.
This place was never a cage; it was a place that embraced her.
As she admired the lotus pond, she was also admiring herself.
Chen Changsheng walked along the road, but this time, the journey was far beyond his expectations.
On the path ahead, there were no demons blocking his way.
The few demons he did encounter merely gave him a passing glance. They no longer threatened to eat him like before.
They seemed much friendlier.
Even so, he could still sense their restless urges.
Chen Changsheng stroked his chin. Unable to figure out the reason, he didn't dwell on it and simply kept walking.
It wasn't until a long time later that he caught a familiar presence amid those peering gazes.
And that person seemed to have recognized Chen Changsheng as well.
"Halt!"
Chen Changsheng called out to stop him.
But the figure suddenly bolted into the distance.
Chen Changsheng frowned and immediately gave chase.
Such behavior was highly abnormal!
Seeing the person's extreme speed, Chen Changsheng took to his sword in pursuit.
Finally, in a valley, he caught up to the fleeing figure.
Chen Changsheng looked at him and asked, "Why are you running?"
The man turned around and met his gaze.
Chen Changsheng froze.
The person standing before him was completely identical to Zhao Yuqing.
But upon closer inspection, he was vastly different.
Chen Changsheng frowned and tightened his grip on his sword.
Zhao Yuqing's inner demon smiled at him and cupped his hands in greeting. "Chen Changsheng, it's been a long time."
Chen Changsheng leveled his sword at his side and said, "Where is Zhao Yuqing?"
The inner demon didn't answer directly. Instead, he said, "He is doing very well."
Mildly surprised, Chen Changsheng let out a cold snort. "You certainly know how to hide. To think you've managed to survive until now."
"Hide?"
The inner demon chuckled and said, "What am I hiding from? Do you really think that if Zhao Yuqing found me, he would definitely kill me? I met with him a long time ago."
Chen Changsheng reined in his thoughts and asked, "What do you mean?"
"Heh."
The inner demon said, "He has no intention of killing me. He is right here, and he has always known exactly what I'm doing."
The inner demon took a step forward and said, "But that is beside the point. I drew you here, and it wasn't to spout all this nonsense."
Chen Changsheng furrowed his brows.
Then, the inner demon said, "I am determined to change this world. I wonder if you might be interested."
Chen Changsheng cut him off, saying, "This Chen has no desire to listen to your nonsense. Where is Zhao Yuqing?"
The inner demon waved a hand and said, "What's the rush?"
Chen Changsheng raised his sword and slashed.
A streak of sword light swept out in the blink of an eye.
The inner demon stiffened, clearly not expecting Chen Changsheng to strike so decisively.
He raised a hand and unleashed a Divine Ability, conjuring a curtain of water that completely dissolved the Sword Qi.
"When words do not match, even half a sentence is too much."
"So be it."
The inner demon spoke, then pointed in a direction.
"About fifty li that way. That's where he is."
With that, the inner demon departed.
Chen Changsheng didn't pursue him. Even if he caught up, it would be utterly useless. He couldn't cut down this inner demon; doing so would destroy Zhao Yuqing's very foundation.
Following the inner demon's directions, Chen Changsheng found where Zhao Yuqing was staying.
No demons had set foot here. As far as the eye could see, the surrounding several mu of fields were all planted with rice.
A figure was busy working in the fields, letting in water and clearing out pests.
Watching that figure, Chen Changsheng felt inexplicably dazed.
Sensing his gaze, Zhao Yuqing turned his head and saw Chen Changsheng standing by the edge of the field.
Zhao Yuqing paused, then washed his hands in the field's water before walking over.
Though they hadn't seen each other for years, neither seemed to have changed much.
Chen Changsheng glanced at the surrounding several mu of farmland and asked, "Did you plant all of this?"
Zhao Yuqing nodded and asked, "How is it?"
Hearing this, Chen Changsheng opened his mouth but didn't know what to say.
Zhao Yuqing said, "Let's go. I'll treat you to some tea."
By the edge of the field stood a small house that Zhao Yuqing had built himself. Everything about it was very simple.
Zhao Yuqing brewed tea for Chen Changsheng.
After taking a sip, Chen Changsheng asked, "When I woke up back then, I heard you had gone chasing after your inner demon. Why are you suddenly here farming instead?"
Zhao Yuqing took a sip of his tea and said, "Is there something wrong with that?"
"This Chen ran into that inner demon just now."
"You ran into him?"
"Yes," Chen Changsheng said. "Going by his words, it sounded like he wanted to win me over."
"That's not surprising."
Zhao Yuqing said, "He is dead set on reshaping the world. But in the end, he's only an inner demon, and his strength has limits. He knows perfectly well that relying on himself alone is far from enough. Bringing you into the fold is a good idea."
Chen Changsheng paused for a moment and asked, "You knew all of this?"
"I know. How could I not?"
Zhao Yuqing said, "I can't be bothered to care."
"Care?"
"Yeah."
Chen Changsheng couldn't quite grasp his attitude toward the inner demon.
