Immortal Travel of Longevity

Chapter 1354: Thirty Copper Coins

In a flash, several more years passed.

Along the endless road of the Cultivation World, Mister Qingshan sat by the edge of a great lake wearing a conical straw hat and a straw raincoat, quietly waiting for a fish to take the bait.

"Drip."

Rainwater rolled down the brim of his conical straw hat and fell into the lake. Just like the rain falling from the sky, it stirred up a ripple before vanishing from sight.

"Are you actually going to catch any fish?"

The person sitting beside Chen Changsheng gazed at the water, resting her chin in her hand as her hungry stomach grumbled.

The young girl seemed to be starving, just waiting for that fish.

Chen Changsheng said, "Depends on luck."

Zhongli sighed. "We agreed that you'd treat me to a fish. By now, my mother should have already made food and is waiting for me to head back."

He said, "Perhaps it will have to be tomorrow."

Zhongli looked a bit disappointed. She smacked her lips, thought for a moment, and stood up. "You keep fishing. I'm going back to eat something, and I'll come find you again tomorrow."

"That works too."

"Will you still be here tomorrow?"

"Perhaps."

"Alright. If you catch a fish, you can't just eat it all by yourself. We agreed, you're treating me to fish."

Chen Changsheng smiled helplessly. "Alright, This Chen will remember."

The young girl strolled away.

Chen Changsheng paid it no mind. He had only arrived here a few days ago. Upon seeing this great lake, he couldn't help but wonder what the fish inside tasted like, so he simply started fishing. Who could have known the fish in this lake were so incredibly shrewd? For two days in a row, he had come up empty.

During that time, he had met this young girl. She was quite the friendly sort, chatting with Chen Changsheng at length until they quickly became familiar. She then took the opportunity to put him on the spot, making him promise to treat her to fish.

Chen Changsheng had agreed to it. It was no trouble either way; he only wanted to have a taste, and finishing an entire fish by himself would be a bit difficult anyway.

Chen Changsheng didn't rest. He sat by the lake the entire time, waiting for a fish to take the bait.

In a flash, another day and night passed.

At noon the next day, the blazing sun beat down fiercely from the sky.

When Zhongli arrived, she held a lotus leaf over her head, perhaps to keep a bit cooler.

Zhongli came over and sat beside Chen Changsheng, bringing him a few lotus seeds along the way.

"Want some?"

Chen Changsheng paused for a moment before thanking her and reaching out to take them.

Zhongli saw this and said, "Ah, aren't you going to remove the bitter cores?"

Chen Changsheng peeled the lotus seed and popped it into his mouth. "The sweetness that follows the bitterness is just a bit sweeter."

"Ew." Zhongli shook her head. "I can't eat it like that, but adults always do. I don't get it."

"Because you are still young," Chen Changsheng said. "The younger you are, the more sharply you perceive these bitter, astringent flavors. Compared to us, the bitterness you taste is probably far stronger."

"Huh?"

Zhongli blinked as she listened, then asked, "Is that how it works?"

"It is."

Chen Changsheng nodded and said, "The older people get, the saltier they like their food. It's the same principle."

Zhongli said, "You know a lot."

Chen Changsheng said, "It's in books."

"You've read books?"

"A few."

Zhongli said, "Then you must be a young master from a wealthy family."

"Why do you say that?"

"Because only wealthy families have books."

"Is that so..."

Chen Changsheng asked in return, "There are also academies, aren't there?"

Zhongli shook her head. "Tuition for academies is very expensive. Ordinary families can't afford it. Besides, reading books is useless anyway; you're better off farming more land."

Chen Changsheng paused for a moment and asked, "Farming? What else is there besides farming?"

Zhongli said, "Or, well, getting chosen by the immortals on the mountain. Only that counts as being successful."

"Cultivation..."

"Yeah. Ever since I was little, my dad told me that you can only make something of yourself if you become an immortal. Anything else is useless."

Chen Changsheng said, "If we're talking about this place, then entering the Dao and pursuing Cultivation might indeed be the superior choice. But that's not to say reading is useless. At the very least, it can broaden your horizons and experience."

Zhongli ate a lotus seed and said, "Not necessarily."

"How about This Chen gives you two books?"

"Huh?"

Zhongli shook her head and said, "I wouldn't be able to understand a word of it, so what's the point of giving them to me?"

Chen Changsheng was stunned upon hearing this before he said, "This Chen had forgotten."

He couldn't help but feel somewhat helpless about this Cultivation World.

In a world where Dao Cultivation was revered above all else, many things would inevitably fade away over the years.

People viewed Cultivation as the highest path, while reading had become a lesser pursuit.

It had always been this way here. Ordinary people didn't have much room to choose.

Even so, Chen Changsheng still took out two books and handed them to Zhongli.

"These are books?"

"Mm."

"I really don't know how to read."

"If you come here, This Chen will teach you."

"I don't want to learn. The stuff inside is so complicated and messy. I wouldn't understand any of it, and it would definitely be exhausting."

Chen Changsheng said to her, "Look at how vast this world is. A person could spend their entire life and probably never finish traveling through it. What about you? Are you willing to stay in this place your whole life, or do you want to go out and see things?"

"Does that have anything to do with reading?"

"It does."

Chen Changsheng said, "You must understand the principles of this world and comprehend what is written in these books. Only then will you not lose your way once you leave this place."

"I don't get it."

Zhongli looked at the two books, not feeling much of anything toward them.

Zhongli put the books down and said, "I want to eat fish."

Upon hearing those words, Chen Changsheng didn't say anything more.

He yanked his fishing rod.

A large fish was immediately pulled up with it.

"What a big fish!!"

Zhongli's eyes lit up. She hurried forward and scooped the fish out of the water.

"Whoa."

She stumbled. The fish in her arms kept thrashing about, nearly making her fall to the ground.

"Look at this, this one..."

Zhongli paused mid-sentence.

She looked over, only to find that the man's figure was gone. Left on the ground were the two uneaten lotus seeds and, besides that, two books she couldn't understand at all.

"Where did he go?"

Zhongli was a bit bewildered. She pinned the fish to the ground and looked left and right, but she still couldn't see the man's figure anywhere.

She didn't dwell on it too much either. After thinking for a moment, she took the two books and headed back.

Thanks to that, her family enjoyed a plump, delicious meal of fish.

As for those two books.

Zhongli did flip them open to take a look, but she couldn't understand a single thing.

The next day, she went to the market.

She sought out a young master from a wealthy family.

"I have two books here. Do you want to buy them?"

The young master was taken aback. "Books?"

Zhongli took out the two books and handed them to the person in front of her.

The young master flipped them open and was immediately drawn in by their contents.

"Where did you get these books?"

"Someone else gave them to me. I can't understand them."

The young master thought for a moment and asked, "How much are you planning to sell them for?"

Zhongli thought about it and held up three fingers.

Thirty copper coins.

And just like that, she sold the two books.
